Room/Airplane cleaning tips. Do you sanitize?

all of this nonsense is what is actually promoting the rise of superbugs and asthma etc.

we are destroying our immunity and improving that of the bugs!

I agree 1000 percent how on earth will your body be able to fight off anything if you never expose your self to anything:worship:

I travel 300+ days a year. I live in hotel rooms. I travel all over the world. I am on airplanes (not to mention trains, subways, taxis) several times a week.

I have NEVER ever ever 'sanitized' my hotel room or airplane seat.

The overuse of antibacterial products in America is having a negative impact on immune systems.

Wash hands regularly and you will be fine.

I agree...I just don't want to expose myself to anybody else bugs when I'm at Disney....

Disney - germophobe
at home - just wash hands when I come home, don't really worry about it

There are bugs ,grems, virises(sp) every kind of strain every where and on everything all over the place ..even on your purell bottle.

I am a normal, healthy femlae adult with no immunocompromization.
I do none of the things listed, other than wash my hands.
I go to WDW at least 2x/year if not more. I also travel other places.
I sleep on the sheets, drink out of the cups, use the ice bucket, stand barefoot in the shower.
I have never had bedbugs, C.Diff, or athlete's foot.

I'm a nurse. There is nothing I am going to encounter in an airplane or hotel room that I have not encountered in a 25x more virulent strain at work. I usually get one cold per year, in November or so. I've had the flu once (don't get a flu shot) and have never had pneumonia. Used to get strep throat a lot as a kid, but I seem to have grown out of that!

thank goodness to hear this - I was freaking out, reading these posts. We go on vacation 1-2 times a year, and I have always used the blankets, never checked for bedbugs, do use the cups/dishes, stand barefoot in shower and never sanitized our rooms. I was beginning to think I needed a seperate suitcase for cleaning supplies! :scared1:

Great tips here.
These are esp important to me too due to children's allergies :surfweb:

It's great for those people who have not gotten sick and had there vacations ruined. We've had the expense and the inconvenience of getting pinkeye twice while on vacations and we had a stomach virus ruin another trip. I can understand why people want to sanitize things after experiencing their vacations being ruined. I think it's easier to judge when you hav'nt had that experience. I never thought to clean everything in the hotel room after we were sick and checked out, who knows if the people who checked in after us got sick as well or not. Linda :)

I have never disinfected a room on vacation and have never gotten sick.

And I agree with what a PP said...the overuse of antibacterial products is causing more problems then they are helping. The reason we build up immunities to all the nasty bugs out there is because we are exposed to them. If you are constantly trying to kill them off with chemicals you can't build up a natural immunity. And if you have no immunity then you get sick.

So I don't worry about the airplanes or hotel rooms. I just do my normal thing and have fun on my vacation.

MTE :thumbsup2

Btw, during my last visit at WDW, I spent a couple of mornings in bed, eating Krispy Kremes while switching channels using a non-sanitized, not in a ziplock bag remote control. I switched channels and then used my hand to eat a Krispy Kreme. I didn't get sick, didn't die.
Or it isn't that bad, or I have a pretty good resistance.
If I ever get sick on vacation, it's or from the heat I'm not used to, from the water I'm not used to or from the food I'm not used to.

For all of who clean and wipe down everything in your rooms do you do the same thing on all the park rides all the door handles you touch the strollers you rent at the park all the tables you sit at at the park all the dishes ,glasses ,forks etc..you touch.Like I said befor everything every inch of our surroundings is coverd in some kind of germ.

No, we just wash our hands before we eat and try not to touch our faces.

Really, I don't even get why this is a debate? Does it matter to anyone else if I wipe my phone off in the hotel room?

As for the remote ...do you really know what that remote has been through? The remote has way too many buttons where grim and germs can hid.
Think of what usually goes on in a bedroom. And what about runny nose kids who still have not learned the life lesson such as don't put your finger in your nose, covering your mouth when you cough, washing after using the bathroom, not putting their mouths on the remote, shopping cart handles ect.

There are even adults who use the restrooms and don't wash. Think of what a trail of germs and dirt they leave behind.

Having worked in the medical profession I have a better understanding of the spread of germs and the best defense to staving off on illness. But not many people do the right thing. So not to ruin my vacation I will still take my Clorox wipes, zip lock bags & my hand sanitizer with me.

I think for people who have never gotten sick on vacation it is easy to say that they do not think about wiping anything down. I never used to until I got very sick 4 days into our trip in 2006. I came home with pneumonia. I now wipe down EVERYTHING in the room & carry my hand sanitizer with me. I spent a day & a half in the room sick. To each their own..In my room everything will be wiped down. Not sure how I got sick or where I picked it up but I feel better knowing that I sanitized the room & wash & sanitize my hands.

Us Disers put some much into our trips that the thought of us getting sick during that much anticipated trip is probably what really scares us.

I not a true germaphobe outside of a Disney vacay.....but I am going back in May and would hate to have any of my family come down with a cold.

For those of you who have never gotten sick on a trip.... that's great.
This thread seems to showcase boths sides of the issue.
I don't think any of us really care whether "you" (personally) take extra precautions or not so there is no need to defend not sanitizing your room or public surfaces.
Do what ever makes you comfortable on your trip.
As a person who had a trip with a child who got a fever and cold at Disney, I feel more comfortable taking extra measures to ensure that none of my family gets sick.

Here is the perfect solution ... I wonder if it comes in lime green though? :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

###note this is just a joke... not intended to hurt feelings or in anyway tick people off####

I take Lysol Wipes and do all handles, light switches, knobs, phone, table, ect... in the room.

I used to wipe down the remote, but saw in a post months ago how the OP put her remote in a baggie and kept it sealed in the entire time (covered, but still worked fine) and we totally plan on doing that this year!

I take a liquid antibacterial soap dispensor for the room.

We take antibacterial wipes with us into the parks and use these.

I wash my hands before (and after of course) using the restroom.

We all wash our hands before eating anything, even a snack!

We always (to any hotel, Disney or not) take our own pillows... we don't want anyones drool (visible or not) anywhere near our faces... yuck! :scared1:

We never, ever, ever, use a hotel provided comforter, and will sometimes even pack our own light blankets or personal throws!

We always take slippers so our feet do not touch the floors in the hotel room/restroom AND we always wear surf shoes in the pool area!
