hey there!

I'm going on the 7-night Caribbean Cruise on the Disney Fantasy in a few days. I am experienced with the parks, but have never been on a Disney Cruise before.

I'm hoping some kind folks would be willing to give me some tips and advice such as: things they wish they knew before their first Disney cruise, secrets, hacks, how to make the most of the cruise, tips regarding the ports, and tips in general!

Any contribution would be greatly appreciated

I recommend searching and reading through the 100s of posts with this information. Use the Personal Navigartors and relax. It is vacation.

Enjoy your cruise! If you aren't happy with anything one thing we learnt is tell them as early as possible. If they don't know they can't fix it! Book palo if you are adults it's lovely. The adults only pool area is nice. An FE is fun but don't over spend on the first time we made that mistake!

Change rotation of dining if not happy. Think about do you want a table by yourselves at dinner or share with others? You can ask for one alone we prefer this. They don't always give it but we have always had it so far. Others prefer to share it's an induvisual thing.

Ask to try a couple of dishes at dinner. They will gladly bring you more food!

Who all are traveling ? Just adults or with kids ? FE is something that travel groups arrange between themselves but if leaving in a few days any groups created would have long closed by now. Don't worry about missing that, you would want to read up on those to even know if that is something you would enjoy, it is similar to a secrete Santa group.

When you reach the port be sure to read the Navigator to see where you need to go on the ship to sign up for anything you have not yet signed up for. Your on line check in needs be complete prior to 3 days out otherwise all check in is at port. Bring a couple different colored highlighter to mark the things you want to do the next day on your Navigator each night when it is delivered to your room. It is easy to see something you want to do and then forget until after it happened when you don't have your reminders. Load the navigator app from the web site prior to cruise from the DCL website Book a placeholder for a future cruise while aboard in order to get the discount and stateroom credit, you always cancel if you decide against cruising again within the next 2 years. Deposit is refunded if cancelled more than 90 days prior to 2 year mark.Go to all production shows.

Don't try to do everything...most people can't be in 2 places at once :)

If this is to be a relaxing and rejuvenating cruise, bring whatever helps you do that (I restock my kindle prior to every cruise).

If this is a more active, attend many activities kind of trip (and many people going many directions) then highlighters for the navigators (when we would do this for our family we'd assign a color for each person, leave it in the cabin and at a quick glance, know where everyone is...or thereabouts). There's an app with the navigator but the old school way allows for an immediate visual of the entire party (or maybe I just don't like technology!).

In the old days, we'd use a dry erase board and put it on the interior of the door to leave messages for each other. That changed to post it notes...now I believe most people use the wave phone or the app. Disclaimer- I've never used the app but DH says he could text other members of our party using it.

Some folks like to bring a nightlight for the room, some will bring a clothespin to secure the curtains (to keep out the sun/provide privacy in the room divider), some a non plug in air freshener for the restroom. I've never done any of these but they make sense.

I DO bring a used hotel key card or an old store rewards card for the light switch and leave it in for the duration of the cruise-hard enough to remember where my key to the world card is without having it provide power. You'll see lanyards for sale somewhere (all prior cruisers have them given gratis)-consider whether you're a lanyard user or not and if you have one at home that can hold a card bring it so you don't have to buy one.

There is a drug store not too too far from the port so if you forget something last minute it has lots of "oops I forgot" items. Shampoo, conditioner and soap provided so unless you have to use a specific kind then don't worry about packing that stuff.

The assembly drill the day of departure is NOT OPTIONAL (sorry, pet peeve). If your muster station is outside, it will be hot in the summer, possibly rainy, possibly cold in the winter. Prepare for those possibilities. The horns are loud but they give you a warning to cover your ears (or the kids') so it's not that surprising.

I usually end up doing laundry on cruises that are a week long--there are self laundry stations on some decks but not all and they have more machines in some of the rooms than others (odd). You pay with your key to the world card so no need to haul around quarters. There are very good instructions on the wall but if there is a problem there is a phone you can use to call someone who will come help. If you do laundry, check your washer/dryer frequently (or set a timer). People get a little testy in the laundry room for some reason and I usually end up getting up early, doing laundry and just reading in the room to avoid and toes getting stepped on. This is also where the iron and ironing board is and this can get busy on certain nights.

Pack and wear what you want. Lots of discussions about too formal, not formal enough. Live and let live sartorially (except in Palo/Remy, they do have dress codes). I get cold in the MDRs so I always take a sweater but I'm a thin blooded Southerner. So you might not.

But mostly...have fun and enjoy your vacation!

Very good advice. If I can ask a question...What settings do you put your smart phones on? I have an iPhone and an iPad.

Welcome to the world of Disney Cruising! You will surely love it!

With so many different aspects of the cruise, it's hard for me to think of specific tips and such, but as other have noted keep reading these boards and you will be a pro in no time. If you have specific questions feel free to ask and I'm sure you will get tons of helpful info!

With that said, are you sailing on 8/20? My family and I are on that cruise.

You want to put it on airplane mode, and then turn on the wifi so you can use the DCL Navigator app. Be sure to download it BEFORE you get on the ship. Also be sure to sign up for the free data package the first day, but it's a tiny package, so you'll want to just use it to check email on occasion or something. Log out of the account when you're done what you want to do, so all the other usual iPhone/iPad stuff doesn't use all the data in 10 minutes.

There's a whole heap of stuff you want to turn off so that you don't go through the free wifi in ten minutes. Eg photo sharing to the cloud, auto updates on apps, etc. Last time I cruised there were flyers they had for the different phone types (iPhone, android, etc.) telling you what to turn off.

Yes I am on the 8/20! That's so cool that you'll be on the same one!

We did that cruise two years ago and then did the other 7 day Caribbean cruise on a smaller boat last year. Both are wonderful. Disney provides wave phones in the room. They are wonderful way to communicate. I found that the app worked well for activities that were going on. However, it does not buzz when someone texts you. The way phones make communicating so much easier. My kids also loved the detective agency game that was only available on the fantasy and the dream. My son played every possible game twice. He knew the ship like the back of his hand. I found the food and all of the restaurants to be wonderful and personally do not think it is worth the extra hundred dollars to dine in Palo. I have dined there and enjoyed the food, but I didn't think the extra cost was worth it.

Stay on the boat during one of the days when the boat stops at a port. There are absolutely no lines for anything and the kids can swim in the pool without bumping into people.

We have enjoyed meeting people at our dinner table. On only one of our four cruises did we find that we had nothing to talk to our table mates about. Skip the spa treatments. Although they are relaxing, I have found them to be very overpriced. My daughter has been to the Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Bootique and has loved it each time. Bring a Disney dress from home and this will save you $100.

The adult shows at night are very fun and it is nice to be somewhere without the kids. Once our kids were old enough to stay in the room alone, we start going to those shows. Try and get to the theaters early to get the best seats. It really does make a difference.

My husband and I did the 5K on castaway Cay this year for the first time. Although it was brutal in the heat, we really enjoyed ourselves. If you have a child young enough to dig in the sand, bring a bucket and shovel from home. They are very expensive on the island and you can just leave it there if you don't want to pack it. Don't worry about bringing beachtowels. They are everywhere.

on our first cruise published boarding time was around 1pm. So we had a late / large breakfast before leaving the World, "because there wouldn't be any food until dinner" :rotfl2:

  • You can't do it all - so don't try, BUT Sleep is for AFTER the cruise
  • You can't eat it all either, but this is the time to try out new foods because they will bring you replacement food at dinner time (for free ;) - well no extra charge at least since you've already paid for it) if you don't like what you ordered first.
  • The hardest part of a DCL cruise is deciding what NOT to do - because there are many activities that overlap. choices, choices (which are a good thing)
  • The shows / activities that are in-between the dinner seatings - I've found them to be very enjoyable.
  • Sunscreen Regularly - the sun :sunny:IS DIFFERENT in the Caribbean than at home (usually) and sunburns are not fun anytime, and especially on vacation.
  • The hallways in the stateroom areas are NOT a Meeting Areas - take your loud conversations to the public areas!!
  • Your trip probably will be very very good, but not "perfect". Don't take your frustrations out on the CM's that are trying to make your holiday Excellent!
  • If you've had reasonable experiences at all of your eating venues, please give your servers (Server & Assistant Server) at least the "standard" gratuity at the end of the cruise. Same with your room steward. If everyone tips the standard, then EVERYONE that serves you will be getting tipped as they should. The perception is that you are tipping your serving team only for dinners, but the amount covers them for all day - because they will be working all over the ship for your entire cruise.

I recommend the Unofficial Guide to Disney Cruise Lines. It may be a little late in the game, but there's tons of good tips in there.

A couple of things I learned while cruising.

1. Quarters are tight. I like to bring a clear shoe bag to put over the bathroom or closet door with everything that we need on a daily basis..... sunscreen, hairbrush, perfume, deodorant, scrunchies, makeup etc.
2. Be neat and orderly. Take the time each morning, before going out, give your room the once over. Put everything away. This way, when time is at a premium you know where things are and not compounding the mess.
3. Plan your shore days, whatever the plan is. Winging it can turn into a lot of wasted time. You see this all of the time at WDW and people get pissy because they can't navigate or make that ADR OR wait in line for 70mins for Soarin'.
4. Like jrabbit said, the hallway is not a meeting place. Plan with your other cruisers to meet in public areas. On that same note we plan a regular meeting place just in case you don't know where people are. I cruised with 35 of my closest family members once (notice I said once lol), this was a great help. Also, if you have children, the hallway is not a NASCAR track. The running and yelling is truly unkind to those that are still asleep or at least trying to.
5. I have an owner's locker in Orlando so I tend to forget to bring certain things when I go elsewhere. If you have wine, don't forget a corkscrew. I tend to forget scissors, tweezers, moleskin (for avoiding blisters) and my toe sock (encases my overlapping toe excessive walking makes it painful to walk) My point, don't forget the little things. Those things that are important to you may not be available on the ship.
6. I like to bring a small laundry bag. I like to do laundry when I vacation. I hate schlepping so many clothes. To this end I like a laundry bag that I hang up in the closet over a hanger. When it's time for laundry it is all bagged up and is out of the way.
7. Take the time to nest (get your room the way you like it) working out of a suitcases and/or a makeup bag and be a pain in the fiddle fi dat for daily usage.
8. Lists can be everything. I am currently making a list of what I need to pack for our Oct cruise. Every time we think of something it will go on the list. In a couple of weeks I will make the master list. We are only bringing one suitcase and one rolling smaller bag. The list will be how many of each clothing 5 underwears (i love that word lol) 5 t shirts 4 shorts etc for the suitcase. The others will be in the sundry bag and lastly what's going in my carryon.
9. Your carry on. Consider what you must have.. what are your plans for that day? If you are not swimming do not bring your bathing suit lol. If you plan to relax and read a book until your room is ready bring what you need, perhaps a book :) and sunscreen. Don't forget to carry on those prescriptions that you need. Don't put them in your checked luggage. Try not to make your carryon too heavy. It gets heavier as the hours pass.
10. Consider weather, first and last day of your cruise... we are leaving out of NYC but we are from LI so I know what I will need to keep me warm. If you are from FL and leaving out of NYC October can be a cool/cold month 50 would be a lot colder to you then it is for us.
11. I got this off the Disney cruise blog... a load of good information. If you have a travel mug, i.e. refillable mugs from WDW, bring them with you. The cups they offer for refills is not all that big. You may not fill directly from the fountain but you can use the cup to refill the mug. Less trips to the fountain. I loved that idea.

So sorry I got so long winded. This was only suppose to be 4 suggestions but one thing kept leading to another to another next thing I know, oy vey, it's a short story. Have a great trip!

The over the door hangers are no longer allowed. If you are looking for something like this, hanging from a hanger in the closet or hook in the room would be a substitute.

If you want to win the hearts of your servers and room stewards, get a big bag of bite sized or fun sized Hershey's or KitKats or Milky Ways or Snickers - pretty much any chocolate and divide it into sandwich bags. Give a sandwich bag of chocolates to each at the BEGINNING of your cruise as an "advance thank you for the wonderful service I know we'll get". 4 or 5 small bags of chocolate will win you friends for life and they will live up to your expectations. Besides it's fun to do something just to be nice. Just don't use this as an excuse to skimp on the tip at the end of the cruise.

Get the easiest PAT as possible!

On my first cruise, I thought that checking in worked the same as for airlines...you check in and then they board everyone at the same time. I was stoked when I booked the latest PAT possible...who wants to wait around all day to board the ship?! Lol. Boy was I shocked when we got there and saw the ship was packed and people were already in the pools and having fun! We missed the family introductions too!

Lesson learned

OR just simply treat them like the human beings they are rather than servants. Smile, talk to them, ask them about themselves. :) I've never given food or money in advance, and I've always gotten AMAZING service on DCL.

After we make our last calls to family, we power them off and put them in the safe not to be used again until we return to port. iPads and iPods have wifi off and are only used before bed for a few minutes and for music when running. Part of our enjoyment of the cruise is getting away from screens:), so we will likely not use the app until they do away with the paper navigator.
