Rooftop Car Carrier?

We really enjoy ours. It gives the kids some room to spread out a little. Now that they're bigger, that's an issue

I changed my mind.
I found a good quality hard shell rooftop luggage carrier through Craigslist for $50. It more than doubles our minivan's storage space. I put it on the roof this past weekend to road test it. No noise whatsoever.

We will take a hit on the mileage, but a previous poster noted that they were saving a ton of money by driving and that another $40 in gas would be worth it for the comfort of the passengers.

Having the carrier will allow the kids to put pillows and blankets in the back when they don't need them.

LOL - that's funny! You sounded so sure of yourself before, too! I'm sure you'll like the extra space!

DISsers have a lot of good input. This is a great website.

(I did sound sure of myself, didn't I? Yikes.)

I better make a note on my original reply.

We stayed in an offsite hotel in December 2009 from the 14th to the 28th. When we went to move out stuff to our Disney Resort, we packed up the suitcases early in the morning and had a full load to baggage check. We went back to pick up the kids (16, 13 and 3) and load up all of our purchases from the last 2 weeks and ended up with a full van again.

My husband would not volunteer :confused3 to stay in Florida forever so we had to buy a hard roof top storage unit from Pep Boys. What a great investment. Pep Boys had to improvise on the installation because our van did not come with crossbars, but even without them, when driving the van, you would never know the carrier was there. Gas was about $35 extra for the trip from Florida to Prince Edward Island, but the convenience was worth it.

The reminds me that I must send my husband to the junk dealers and get a second hand set of crossbars.
