Rome on your Own on the Mediterranean Cruise?

We traveled "on our own" independently (not Disney excursion) in Naples, Rome, and Florence. It was great. Buy the Rick Steve's Med Cruise book and you're off.
The train station is walkable from the ship. We had the Scavi tour reserved and got on and off at San Peitro. Super easy and convenient. We had an afternoon underground Colosseum tour booked. (taxied between the two)

We have a rule when traveling independently, to always have a "safety train." Find what train you'd need to be back for the ship and take the train BEFORE back to the port.

In Naples, we walked to train to Pompei. Then trained back to the city and walked to Pizzeria Michaels. It was pouring raining when we got out so we hoped a taxi back to the ship.

Florence, you need to taxi to the train station. Train into the city. (it is possible to take the port shuttle to the city center and then bus to the train station but just taxi if trying to get to Florence) Everything is walkable. Arrange your David tickets ahead of time if that is important to you. After lunch, we took train direct to Pizza. At the train station window there is a huge sign in English how to get to the tower on city bus. The train from Pizza to the ship took about 15 minutes, then you had to taxi back to the ship. We had climb the tower tickets in Pizza.

We were also going to travel independently at the last stop, but it was cancelled due to weather and we docked in Marcel, France. We followed Rick Steves and travel independently that day too.
We paid a fraction of what people on the Disney tours did, saw more and had a great time.

Last tip, I would recommend downloading Google Offline Maps for the cities you're in.
