Southern California Romantic few day stay before DLR

Just my DH and I are going to California this April and I am wondering (besides San Diego) where you would spend a few days before DLR.

I am looking for on the beach, hotel with balcony....that kind of thing. We thought about San Diego, but think that it would be nicer to stay a little closer to DLR. But if San Diego is going to offer me the best loding, then we will go there.

Any ideas?

Check out Huntington Beach. It is about 30 mins or so away from DLR. There are both a Hilton & Hyatt across from the beach/ocean. May also be some other non-chain hotels.

Also check Laguna Beach and Newport Beach. If you are looking for more of a bed & breakfast vibe, check out the Blue Lantern in Dana Point (just north of Laguna). That chain (small, family owned) also has a b&b in Newport Beach.
