DD has come home from school today saying that the Maths department at her school are planning a visit to DLP to study Rollercoaster Maths. Is this a hoax? Has anyone ever heard of this? I can't find any details on Disney's website?

Any ideas/opinions?

Thanks

Sounds like an excuse for a school trip to DLRP to me, :lmao:
Having said that I know nothing about maths, it's perfectly possible there's some obscure branch called rollercoaster maths! And I should imagine the engineers who build them do have to do some heavy number crunching.

I can see how this would work, there's quite a lot of information if you google it, seems to be quite popular in the States, Physics too.

Maths has certainly moved on from when I was in school, but I'm all for anything that makes subjects more interesting to students. :thumbsup2

I wish my school did this, but then I can't complain as we were the only year to have a trip to DLP:yay:

Hi RuddClan and welcome to DLP DIS board :wave2:
We are a friendly bunch here so please join in on any other thread or if you have a number of questions then just start a new thread for each :goodvibes

If you have not had a look yet, DLP posting rules are here, DIS posting guidelines can be found here.

Cyrano, thanks for the welcome but I have been here before. Do you have any idea about my original question?

Thanks in advance :thumbsup2

lol i suppose it could be possible. When I was doing my A levels the graphics, textiles and woodworky lot got to go on a trip to DLP. i'm sure they spent most of their time on the rides!!! Maybe I should have chosen my subjects more carefully and got a cheap trip out of it :sad2:

I'm thinking mostly an excuse for a bit of a holiday but there probably will be a bit of maths behind it. My brother did a similar thing when he was at school but they went to Alton Towers rather than Disneyland :)

This is something pretty common here in the States.

I doubt it is something specifically endorsed by Disneyland but instead is something that the Maths department created (probably a big Disney fan on the payroll there and needed an excuse for the trip).

You can use math to determine:
Based on capacity of rockets on Space Mountain, average wait time, etc. About how many people experience the ride per hour?

Or determine the speed of BTM etc etc.

sounds like fun!

Definitely!! :thumbsup2

My DD was going to DLRP on a geography trip :confused3 even though it was after her GCSE's. :rotfl2: Unfortunately, it had to be cancelled as although there was a lot of initial interest there weren't enough definites when the time came to pay. This is unfortunate for my DD's friends who have never been but I think my DD was secretly glad as she thought we'd now have more money to spend on her prom dress!! :)
