Roller Shoes

The other day we saw some kids in our neighborhood on “roller shoes” – sneakers with retractable wheels. Ever seen these? Take a look here:

The first thing we thought was, “Wow, those would be great to use in the theme parks!” And the second thing we thought was, “I bet those aren’t allowed in the theme parks!” Anybody know for sure – are they allowed or aren’t they?

My little brother has some of those! When we were at Disney last December, he didn't get yelled at when rolling around. Then again, he was holding onto my Dad's hand and rolling slowly. Sorry, I'm not much help. :D

I can just see all kinds of "bad things" happening from wearing roller shoes in a crowded theme park. The pair I tried were very heavy, the wheels small and toy-like, and no real braking ability. They mostly come in kid sizes, but if you are determined...you can get them for adults.

Hope you have an awesome vacation no matter how you get around the World.

I know that all the parks I have visited have no running rules and I believe that roller skates and skate boards are banned so I would expect that roller "shoes" are also not allowed. BUT, I did see a boy about 12 years old rolling all over Six Flags New England last month and no one said anything to him.

WOW!!!
This post brings back memories.
I had a pair of POP WHEELS back in the 60's when I was a teen. They were shoes with wheels that you pop out when you wanted to skate. Then you would just pop the wheels back inside the shoe when you were done skating..
I always wanted to reinvent them again. I knew there would be a market for them.
Thanks for the info.

I am pretty sure I did see some kid at WDW somewhere with roller shoes on...ooohhh I know where, it was in the Lego shop in DTD. He seemed to have it all under control. I would imagine if he was using them at one of the parks and was being excessive in speed or clumsiness (!!) he might be asked to remove them. I would imagine that there is a no skateboard/roller blade rule, but I can't find anything on any of the park maps, or guides to say there is. Before you spend the cash on the shoes, you might want to clarify the rules. To be honest I can't imagine Disney would encourage the use of them. They are pretty neat though!

My granddaughter begged for (and got) a pair of those a couple years ago. She abandoned them within a few weeks. She found that they were too heavy to be comfortable walking shoes, and the wheels were so small that they weren't very good as skates either. I think she also said that if she walked through anything mucky, it would get up in the part where the wheels are (when they're collapsed) and be a real mess to clean out. I know that doesn't answer the question about whether they would be allowed in the parks, but I couldn't help but pass along what I saw in my DGD's case.

Okay - I just went to the web site posted above, and these shoes are different from what my DGD had. Hers had two wheels that were located more in the middle of the shoe. How in the heck can somebody skate on just one wheel at the back? I do see that these have a plug that looks like it covers the wheel when it is retracted, and the wheel is removable.

I feel like they are just an accident waiting to happen...and I always have a sudden urge to trip someone whenever I see them rolling along. I dont' do it of course! But the temptation :)

I see them all the time at DTD. I really don't like them. It is just too crowded for them. I've even seen them using them inside World Of Disney. Crazy.

allearsnet.com recently posted this issue on Anita Answer. These are absolutely forbidden at WDW. Makes sense.

There is a no skating rule in the parks, which applies to roller shoes as well. (As with most rules of this nature, some CMs are better than others about enforcing it)

Those were a big trend here about 5 or so years ago, and got so bad that schools had to ban them because kids were skating inside the school. The mall banned them, as well.

I haven't seen a pair in several years. I am sure that Disney would quickly stop you as well. It's no different than skating in rollerblades, using a skateboard, etc.

I see quite a few kids with these on at WDW. I have never seen any CM's say anything to them. I have also seen some of these kids bump people out of their way when they are going too fast which is most of the time.
I wouldn't think they would not be very comfortable for long term because you have to rest on your heel and keep your toe up in the air since the wheel is only on the back of the shoe. I don't think my foot would like to be in that position very long. Peggie
