Well. LoL, I did my part. I saw it 3 times.
I completely agree with your commentary and assessment of Rogue One so I won't be repettative.
I will say that I think RO makes Episodes IV, V, and VI that much better. I saw it opening Thursday at midnight and after the movie I found myself wanting to go home andwatch IV. If it wasn't so late I would have.
One final comment based on the discussion. As for Disney steering the SW ship now a friend who is a Super SW geek had the best perspective when Disney bought Lucas and people were complaining. He said that before now we got nothing and the last 3 Lucas Episodes were bad. So if just half of what Disney puts out is good, we diehards are way ahead in the game. So my guess is a percentage of diehards will say Disney is two for two, a percentage will say they are one and one, but I don't see anyone saying that they bombed on both.

Remember george screwed it up so badly with greed and bad product that the bar was on the ground when disney bought it...they had no other options than to come in "above it"

R1 is the antithesis of TFA: its purely for geek fans that gareth Edwards now becomes the champion of...

Are we worried about what JJ Abrams thinks? Hell no.

And now 8...the death of fisher creates a problem and their Rey/ren story arcs seem to be "shortsighted"...but we'll see.

And Rian Johnson defending the prequels two weeks ago is a BAD sign.

R1 continues to gain some strength at the box office with little to no competition on the horizon in North America...

The Chinese opening with the two stars inserted specifically to gain the Chinese market is interesting this week...

So we just got home from watching it, and while it was good, we both preferred TFA. And please that line they gave Vader ("Don't choke")? Corny. In originals he would have said nothing. I like seeing the tie in, but honestly I'm sitting here feeling a bit, "Meh." Whereas TFA left us wanting to go right back in and watch it again. We're going to take kids to Sing instead.

Now, is this going to be a trilogy too?

No, but the novel Catalyst is a good primer for Rogue One. It gives back story to Galen and family, Krennic, Saw.

I read it in between screenings of Rogue One. I also am finishing up the Rogue One novel. It obviously follows the movie, but does add some needed insight to the thoughts of characters (especially Jyn) that are lost in the movie. There are a few flashback dream sequences Jyn had in the movie but there are many more in the book.
One I especially enjoyed was what was going through K2SO's cpu/mind when he was "dying".

It's ironic that that final scene is so much more significant now than when I first saw it...16 days ago.

I saw it for the 3rd time yesterday and it's growing on me as far as overall quality...empire is still the best (watched it last week)...Jedi will always be my favorite.

But I think episode 3.5 is pretty close to the second best when you consider all the elements.

Disney...the holders of the lucky stone...are going to make more money on R1 after fishers Death...and a lot more off Ep. 8...insurance policy aside.

Took my 4 1/2 year olds on Sunday to see with their Grandpas. Minus the 30 minutes of previews (I mean REALLY????), they liked it. They talked about K2 the rest of the weekend, they thought he was so cool, and funny. My Dad, and Father In Law really liked it too. I'd say after the second viewing I enjoyed it even more. I missed so much the first go round. Caught a second sighting of The Ghost, etc. I love how they tied up lots of story lines into this film.

You're ranking of the films is the same as mine. Empire, Jedi, R1, Hope, TFA......3,2,1. Just adored Jedi, but that was at the peak of my adolescence, so I have a soft spot for it.

There is book out called Bloodline...It's about how Senator Leia Organa becomes General Organa. I found it to be quite good, and it filled in plotholes for TFA. I wish they would have made it as a movie. Sadly, now they never will be able to I loved Rogue One, although I felt more drained coming out of it...R1 and TFA were different kinds of movies, I enjoyed both, although I did feel R1 had tighter writing. TFA, I went and read books to fill in some back story to fill in holes in the movie plot...I didn't feel that way about R1

How come? Because the book is out? Seemed to work well for Harry Potter. Or is there just not enough for a movie?

And then george returned to save us...but made himself and all of us fools instead. Ever try to defend a prequel to somebody who isn't an avid Star Wars fan? They say it's just another dumb movie and they're right.

But R1 gives me some hope that people in Hollywood do get it. It just feels more like that kinda Cold War adventure we miss. TFA sounded and looked the part more...but they cut corners on the story. What a horrible miscalculation.

I wouldn't care if it looked like the Beverly hillbillies if the story stuck with me...

All I can say is now I have a little bit of "hope"

These next two movies don't look promising though...I gotta say...

The book is set between slave girl Leia of 1983 and "live fast" Carrie fisher of 2015...you can't "digitize" that for a movie and recasting between two visual on screen representations would be a huge stretch for EVEN disney

I thought they did good with getting the franchise back en route, even if the story seems a bit of a re-hash. I do think some of that is a stretch, as there's quite a few characters that we know very little about.

That being said, I've found the Marvel Universe movies to be quite boring the last couple of go rounds. Perhaps its the over saturation. Perhaps the story telling is just gotten thin.....I'm hoping the SW movies don't fall down the same path.

So my parents saw it. First movie my dad has seen at the theater in 10+ years. They both really liked it.

I have yet to meet anyone in person who isn't in love with it. I'm friends with a lot of SW geeks.

It's now overtaken Captain America for the box office number two slot. I have every confidence it'll take the number one slot from Dory soon. We're going into the dead months for movies and there's little competition. I'll be seeing it again within the week for viewing number three.

In other news, the Han Solo movie has been pushed back. Maybe Disney realized it was a mistake. I scrolled through the Facebook comments on the announcement and there were maybe a handful of people who wanted the movie to be made. Everyone else was very against it. Granted, I don't want the movie but I'd still go see it.

The Star Wars fanbase is very against the solo movie...

The reason is simple: we all know what Solo did and what he is...

It was Harrison ford circa 1977-1980.

Trying to reinvent a beloved character is just not adding to the franchise. We don't need it and frankly don't want it.

I think they made a mistake with Solo in the force awakens as well. Kennedy, abrams, kasdan, and disney all did too much service to what ford and his wallet wanted. He had them by the proverbial stones.

The killed Han Solo...and it was about as gut wrenching as a scene from big top pee wee. It was a high paid exit vehicle from an actor well past his prime. Now on to Indy 5

If it's done like Rogue One it could be great. IMO he's the one character from the original movie that a back story would be very entertaining.

I think it'll ruin his character arc for a new hope. They might prove me wrong, but I feel like Han will need to end that movie being a grey character and I don't see them doing that. Though rogue one does give me more hope.

I am also very against back stories for original characters. I seriously hope that Yoda doesn't need a back story. Let's leave some romanticism and mystery with these characters.

Agree...it's easily a 9/1 split against/for the Han Solo movie.

I have no desire...I probably won't see it.

Ford might have been right in 1983: it's kinda an empty character...once you accept he's a space pirate...it was "a little thin" (his words circa 1997...not mine).

They want to "preserve" what the box office does for them and the reception for the highly expensive Rebels

There is 6 years worth of story to fill in between Bloodline and the Poe Dameron comic. I think they will do that via comics and novels. I don't see LFL doing a tv series to cover that time.

But Kylo ren and Rey are already pigeonholed...and we all can agree there wasn't enough original angles in the pigeonholing.

Cousins/brother/sister...and if they don't do that there's little way that it makes any damn sense...just like George's prequels and the plot dead ends or stretches.

Rey and Ben don't have to be related. Yes, the saga stories are about the Skywalkers, sure, but we've already got two: Luke and Ben. Rey is the protagonist, at least now. What if Ben Solo is the protagonist by the end?

I for one am looking towards episode VIII. I liked just about everything about VII except that it was basically a re hash of Episode IV. It was just nice to see a Star Wars movie on the big screen since it had been about 10 years or so. My main question is if they are going to keep the movies in the main series going or if they will stop at IX. Maybe they will stop at IX and begin again after a certain amount of years?

As far as movies that are before IX I feel like they would have endless material, like the supposed Boba Fett standalone that is coming, they could do other movies between III and IV. I feel like the possibilities are endless. But here is also the thought that they series could get tired out and people would just start to get bothered by it rather than excited by it. I myself wouldn't being a big fan and all, but I'm sure the majority of people would
