My wife and I (after a lot of debate), decided that we would really like to have more points at a DVC offsite. We already own at HH and originally thought we would like to have VB as well. Given that HH is closer to home, I felt we would be more likely to use it as a stand alone trip than VB. My wife said she didn't think she could go to Florida and not go to WDW. I, on the other hand, was looking for some more points at an offsite because the offsite vacations are much less expensive than the WDW ones. We made the decision to start looking for a resale. We watched the boards for months while we waited for an upcoming home refi. We found one on Jaki's site that was a few more points than we were looking for.
It was a March 200pt contract with all 2003pts, plus 24pts from 2002. We made an offer of $63/pt, we pay 2003 dues and closing. The buyer accepted our offer. However, the points status was not as it was advertised and was as follows: 144 reservation status points, 80 2003 pts. This was a little disapointing, but we decided to go for it anyhow. The seller was also going to pay the 2003 dues on the reservation pts. Well, after waiting a little over three weeks, we received a call from our guide to let us know about SSR (I had requested she give us the details when we were on our June vacation, but I was really interested in more points at HH or maybe Vero). My wife told her that I was fairly set on an off-site, but left the door open a little for SSR. Qwinky dink...two days later, Disney bought back our resale. The timing was something that made me go Hmmmm?!?!?
My guess is that Disney once they own the contract, could just convert the ressie points back to regular status and sell them.
We turned around and made another offer on an April 200pt HH contract with 138 2003 points. Again, the actual points were a little different than listed. It actually had 111 2003 pts. We offered $63 and settled on $65 we pay 2003 dues and closing. Well, 2.5 weeks later (today) we got the call from Jaki to let us know Disney waived their ROFR.
All in all, the second contract may work a little better for us since the ressie points from the first one would have forced us to take an unplanned trip to WDW, and would have thrown off our AP purchasing plan for every other year.
We now have 825pts at three resorts, and we are done (should I say that?)!!! The extra points will come in hand when we take additional family with us.
The resale experience was OK, and we did meet our goal of not paying more than $69/pt (including CC and dues) for our resale.
I highly recommend Jaki at atimeshare.com She has been very professional and has kept in contact with us throughout the entire process. Now we are just waiting for closing, and already know where to use these points. I hope there will be availability.
