***ROCKSTAR: Supernova*** (spoilers welcome)

See? This is why I leave the legal mombo jumbo to someone else. :) I haven't heard all that, but it makes sense. I mean Mark Burnett isn't an idiot. I couldn't imagine that they didn't check it out before they chose the name. Besides, I don't even think that the other band is even still performing together, are they?

The other band says they still play here and there and they might.

I'm sure Mark Burnett Productions (MBP) did check with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and found no trademark applications alive or dead for Supernova - because there were none (I've checked) - then they choose that name then applied for the trademarks. Then comes the old band saying that's our name, we've used it for 20+ years, blah, blah, blah - yea, that may be true but you NEVER trademarked that name so it's not exclusively yours.

I'll be watching for the actual ruling - I bet MBP wins.

Agree with Dio (another little gnome if you ask me, but soembody who took singing seriously and was much better than Lukas will ever be) but I disagree about James and happen to actually know Geoff (not at all like that).

Personally I think the type Lukas matches are the singers for the other hot genre at the time. The ones we called bat cavers. Robert Smith of the Cure, Morrissey of the Smiths, etc. I don't see anybody in the "Monsters of Rock" era being anything like Lukas.

You actually know Geoff Tate? Man, I loved Operation Mindcrime when it came out. Lucky you!

See, I disagree that he fits in with Morrissey, Robert Smith (all hail the mighty and good Robert Smith! Sorry....Cure fan.....) Sure, he LOOKS the part, and he definatly has issues, but he still doesn't fit with them. I guess he would probably be what Robert Smith would have been if he'd been into real rock.

I'm not sure that we can find a catagory that Lukas actually fits into perfectly. He kind of jumps all over the place. That will either work for him or not. I guess we will have to wait and see. :)

I am sure that you are probably right. He's Mark Burnett, for goodness sake! :)

Hey, totally off the subject, but have you seen if they have released the picture that Lukas made with the band? I read that a few weeks back all the remaining people did a photo shoot with the band (for the album, I guess?) in case they were the winner, and I have seen Dilana's on her MySpace site, but I would LOVE to see the other ones. I wonder if/when they will put them up somewhere?

Here is Dilana's (at least I assume that is what it is!). Sorry it is so big!

This picture is supposedly going to be the album cover. The following pictures were on TLee' website - you can see the actual camera in the left corner so these are NOT the official pictures, just pictures TLee' assistant took while the shoot was going on.

Lucky? Depends on who you talk to. He has the reputation of being quite the ******. But he's a great guy if you don't have to work with him. :teeth:

We hung out all the time before they started touring and have stayed in touch because I remain close friends with the drummer's sister.

But I don't see Lukas as into real (Heavy Metal) rock either. IMO everytime he hits the stage he looks like he is faking it, like if Robert Smith tried to hit the stage with Crue and sing "Girls, Girls, Girls" or "Looks That Kill".

Lukas actually looked most comfortable singing "Headspin Unplugged" and that song is something I would have NOT associated with these band mates in the past. Certainly somebody I would have hooked up with Rockstar: The Cure.

It is very possible to get Lukas and not like him.
I get him just fine. He's not my cup of tea and I think he's a bad fit for a super cheesy stuck in their glory days band like SuavePorn. Toby would have taken the edge off the cheesy. Lukas just makes me want to sing "one of these things is not like the others"
Even the band picture just looks weird. Jason looks depressed and faking enthuisiasm, Tommy looks smashed, Lukas looks someone from a alternative/goth battle of the bands person taking a photo with some guys he met at topless bar, and Gilby looks like a dillweed. Ok that's nothing different for Gilby.

I get that Lukas has talent. I just don't think he was a good choice for them or really for him. Not that it really matters when a year from now the guys will go back to their old bands because Mark Burnett's money train went away

I am So Glad you said this! You're my hero!

Lukas does not have an original bone in his body.
He's an amalgam of so many other Goth/Rock stars that came before him.
Even his stage moves are so repetitive it's not funny.
I think I've counted 5 - and guess what? He does them all ... in every song.
Over and over.
That's going to get dull - real quick.
But not to worry - as I've said before SN is a "Take the money and run" rock band.
Do you think they'll even print the word "sucker" on the tickets?

New name Idea - FauxNova

I think the only reason I would go to a Supernova (or whatever they are called) concert would be to see the House Band. Aren't the other rockers supposed to go on tour and sing with the house band? Or did I make that up? If that's the case, that is what I would pay money to see. Hopefully supernove comes up with a few better songs. I'm not real impressed with the few I have heard from the show so far. :confused3

Seeing Dave Navarro might be interesting too.

But seriously, people may still get some good stuff to watch. Tommys' drum solos are awesome. :teeth:

I am a legal person - in fact, I work in the Intellectual Property field and when I first read about this lawsuit the first thing that caught my attention is that the old Supernova NEVER applied for a trademark through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office...........Mark Burnett Productions has applied for a trademark for Supernova. The old Supernova are suing on the fact that they've been using the name for 20+ years..........I'll be anxious to see how the court rules.

Just because your using a name and have used a certain name for 20+ years does not give you exclusive right to that name UNTIL you've filed an application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The earlier band may have a common law trademark, which could give them certain rights in the geograpic area in which the mark was used. Was it used all over the country? One benefit of federally registering the mark is that it is national is scope, regardless of the actual geographic use made of the mark.

Woa. Sorry about killing the thread.

FWIW, I think Toby would have given the band its greatest shot at hitting the charts.

I could not believe that Toby didn't at least get to tour with the House Band. It looked during the whole show that the house band never thought much of Dilana but loved Toby. And I am not being biased given that Toby is an Aussie.

It seemed that Supernova simply chose the one with the most sms votes.
Not only do I not want to every hear supernova again, but the thought of listening to Lukas's shrieking voice strangling some decent songs makes me feel sorry for those that have already bought tickets for the shows.

At least Toby has already signed a record deal, so maybe we will end up listening to him somehow. Although I already have made a cd of his hits !! :thumbsup2

:rotfl2: I thought I killed the thread.

I agree about them choosing Toby. Big opportunity lost IMO.

I would like to thank dturner for linking me to that fan page that has most of the songs in MP3. I went there yesterday and got all the songs I wanted before they decide to close the site down. I suggest everybody do the same if you want the songs.

I had to snatch the Supernova songs with real singers before they are lost forever. ;)

Woohoo! :thumbsup2

Decent quality mp3 too. I'm listening to Burning Down the House and it actually sounds even better as a mp3.

I go to that site and can listen to the songs, can't figure out how to save them?? Has anyone gotten them onto thier iPod??

:confused3

Not to keep beating a dead horse but since Lukas had more votes, the bigger opportunity would have been lost if they had chosen Toby (or any of the others) over Lukas.

Not necessarily. With a front man like Toby (again, just IMHO) they would have more opportunity to go beyond the audience for that show.

That argument could be made for any of the contestants, especially the top four or five.
