Robot Vacuum Cleaners...

That's why we named our Roomba Rosie :)

I have a cleaning person named Sue that comes biweekly, so my kids named our Roomba "Susie" or Little Sue. Its kind of funny, my little one talks about Susie all the time at daycare and the teacher thought we had live in help!

I also wanted to add that we have a fairly open floor plan but found that our Roomba really does better with a 500-600 SF area at a time. We use one virtual beacon in our hall and one at the dining room entrance. So she does the family room and kitchen on one day and then the hall, foyer, living room and dining room the next day. Her base is in the family room so the days she does the other half of the house she just goes until she runs out of juice. The kids like to come home and "find" her on those days. I run her on the way out the door for work, its a treat for whichever kid gets to turn her on. My cats could care less about her, she bumps into them all time and they just glare at her or jump up on the couch to get out of her way. Sometimes they don't even move though.

What perfect timing! My birthday is next week and I have been thinking heavily about buying one of these.

Two questions for those who have them:

1) How do your pets react? I can just imagine our dog going nuts and barking at it the whole time.

2) Do you need to have a big open area? Our rooms aren't that big and there are lots of chair legs and a big ottoman and floor lamps, and frankly I wonder how this would even be able to move around without bumping into stuff constantly.

My cat was a couch potato. She didn't care. Shortly after we got it, we ripped out all are carpet except in one room, and we locked it in there while it worked. They are supposed to have memory in them to know where chairs and walls are. The pattern on the carpet indicated it didn't miss any areas.

My dog usually goes on another floor. Roomba is currently in her favorite spot - going around the legs of my dining room chairs. I do not have any open rooms in my house (100 years old). She bumps into stuff a lot here.

1) My dogs get up and go to a different room. I wouldn't say they "like" the Roomba, but they avoid it rather than barking at it.

2) Mine goes till it bumps something, turns, goes till it bumps something else, turns.... until it's pretty much done the whole area. I think you'd be fine. My house is almost too open to use it. I think your smaller rooms would probably work better than a big open area.

1) Three cat household here- they were cautious at first, and avoided it. Now, they pretty much ignore it and just get off the floor and observe from the sofa or table.

2) The Neato has laser "eyes" that look around the room. It does go until it bumps into the wall/sofa/chair leg, etc. It backs up and heads off around the obstruction. Ours does get the whole floor area before heading to the next room.
