Robin Williams is a very nice man - or so my son's friends say...

My son just returned from a week in California with about 40 other teenagers. Because of the way the airline reservations were made, they flew out to San Francisco in two groups with my son being in the second group. The first group arrived around two hours before the second and were not looking forward to the almost two hour wait for my son's group to arrive. Their wait turned out to be anything but boring, as while they sat waiting, Robin Williams walked up and sat down in a chair very close to them. He was waiting for his son to arrive at the airport.

The kids were very impressed that he was there (as a couple of kids said) just like any other parent. No security. No entourage (sp?). They started talking to him and said he couldn't have been nicer. He talked to them for quite a while, cracking jokes the whole time. After much coaxing, he did a Mrs. Doubtfire impersonation. He even sat there while many photos were taken including a group shot with all of them.

The kids were very impressed with his down to earth, friendly nature. I don't know if he is like this normally, or if they just hit him at a very good time. I have always liked his work and was very glad that he took the time to be so kind to these kids. My son and his group of course are very dissappointed that he was already gone by the time they landed. LOL

BF's mom saw him at a local surf shop here in Hawaii a few years ago. And let me tell you, she is the type who NEVER gets flustered, and is kind of the bossy in a motherly way-type. She saw him at the shop and asked some of the workers (who she knew, she's a secretary at a high school) if that was Robin Williams and they said yes. So she meekly goes up to him and says, "Mr. Williams, I just wanted to say that my husband and I loved Dead Poets Society," and he said, "thank you," and I guess she just left him alone after that. She said he was very pleasant and everyone was just trying to leave him be. So BF's younger brother says, "did you get his autograph???" But BF's mom was so flustered she didn't even think to ask!

Glad your son had such a great experience.

A friend of mine has seats right behind him at SF Giants games. When they are both there at the same time (he with his son), she says he is always very nice and down to earth. Says he's funny but always low key. The only game that I was at when she and he were both there (she shares her package with 2 other people so doesn't go to every game), she came over and told me he was there AFTER the game was over and he had left. I could've smacked her! I figure it's probably better, as I would just make a fool of myself.

You know Deb, from the way the kids talked I don't think you could have made a fool out of yourself. They said one of the students said something "very silly" to him and he just laughed it off. As I said I have always liked Robin Williams' work (ever since Mork and Mindy). My respect for him, as a genuine nice person, grew when I heard about the airport encounter, and your and LuvTigger's posts.
