Roasted PEEPS!! And camping in the rain..

Just back from a long weekend camping IN THE RAIN! We go twice a year with 3 other couples and all of our kids (ages 14-17). The forecast was lousy, but our kids were so psyched, none of us wanted to be the first to cancel. SO off we went. At least the kids LEARNED something.....that being if the forecast is horrible, you really should NOT go camping. It's gonna take me at least a week to dry everything. Anyhow....onto

THE PEEPS!!

I bought several packages of Peeps after Easter, thinking it would be a fun activitily around the fire! Well, if you put them on a stick and roast them, they predictably swell quite a bit and are easily caught on fire. Drop on in and they swelll and bubble into nothingness. ROAST one CAREFULLY and you would not believe what a taste treat it is!! IT gets lightly browned and the sugar caramelizes. Once it begins to cool the outer surface becomes a thin, crunchy crust. Others were comparing it to the crust on a creme brulee (sp?). I never had that, so I could not make that comparison.

They were REALLY good. Try it sometime!!

Sorry the weather didn't cooperate for your camping trip, but it must not have rained ALL the time if you were able to roast some peeps!! I will have to remember to buy a couple extra packages of them next Easter and try to roast them when we go camping, they sound delicious!!!

Our local K-Mart has patriotic Peeps...they are white with blue and red sugar sprinkles. Cool, but now I GOTTA get some and try that!!!!

Camping was fun, too. We did have some rain-free spells. And this group has a good time no matter what. We kept singing that song:

"I'm with you, baby, come rain or come shine!!"

Anyhow, DO try the roasted peeps if you get a chance. It really WAS good!!

Oh. My. Goodness! These are soooooo good! Just as OP said. All warm and gooey inside, crispy on the outside. Mmmmmmm. Thanks OP for my new addiction! LOL

I've had creme brulee, and I guess it would taste like that.. the peeps would be a little stickier. But it is a pretty close comparison...

I was sitting at the computer laughing and imagining these 'dying' PEEPS and DH asked me what I was laughing about. So I'm reading him the PEEPS part and he says...what's a PEEP? The man has NEVER heard of PEEPS!!! Think about this, try describing what a Peep is to someone who has never seen one and then try to describe secondhand what roasting them would be like. Twenty years and I never knew he was a Peep deprived child!

He thinks we are all NUTS!!!

Penny that was a funy story about your husband, BUT your comment above reminds me - my kids - who are only 3 and 4 - now that I've started roasting peeps, they've suddenly become ventriloquists. Every time I hold one over the flame, they start in with "ow that hurts! I'm melting!" etc. I think I'm in for a loooong ride.
