DH and I came up with an idea of a roadtrip - DD10 has been asking to go to Arizona (we have no idea why she is so infatuated with this part of the US!!), so we thought we could do a road trip - not particularly TO Arizona, but Arizona would be our farthest stop before circling back toward home in the West suburbs of Chicago. We think we can do it for less than a trip to WDW, which is out of our budget this year. Are we CRAZY???!!!

Here is our tentative plan (times are all approx. since we JUST started talking about this):

Day 1: leave home in the very early morning hours and travel to Memphis TN, arrival approx. 11am. Spend the day in Mud Island and swim at the hotel. Any must-do's?

Day 2: Travel to Oklahoma City, spend night - Anything interesting for families there?

Day 3: Travel to Albuquerque/Santa Fe - hoping to do something to educate the kids about the Native American History of the region - any ideas?

Day 4: Flagstaff Az - relax at pool

Day 5: Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim, obviously!) - this will be a day trip unless anyone has any fantastic, budget friendly ideas?

Day 6: Any other fun stuff to do in this area of AZ? Ghost towns, maybe?

Day 7: Start heading toward Denver - anywhere in between that we should see/stop?

Day 8: Denver - DS wants to continue his quest of touring every NFL stadium in the country, so we will probably do that. Anything else fun for families?

Day 9: Possibly another day in the Denver area, or maybe start heading east toward Omaha NE, stopping to spend the night wherever we get too tired to keep driving (day 8 and 9 are up in the air still)

Day 10-(maybe)11: Arrive back home after 7-8 hour drive from Omaha.

If you map this out, it makes a pretty decent oval right smack in the middle of the USA. DD's goal is to make it to every state in the nation, so this will add 11-12 states to her "done" list!

Are we crazy? Has anyone ever done this? My kids (will be age 14 1/2, 10 1/2, and 9 at the time of the trip) are good in the car, they seemed excited about the prospect when we told them about our thoughts, they travel 5-6 hours in the car every 2-4 months to visit family back home on a Friday then back home again another 5 hours on Sunday, and we drove to WDW from Chicago and back 2 years ago. We will have a minivan, so there will be plenty of room for the kids to stretch out and have their own space. We flew last year and all three kids said they preferred driving because it was more of an adventure. DH and I like to drive as well. There is just something about the experience of driving through places that you just cannot get on an airplane!

The other thing is timing. We would love to plan this for spring break, but our SB is always the last full week of March, and I do NOT want to deal with snow and ice, which is always a threat in late March in the Midwest - what about the other places? I am assuming ice would be the big problem in the middle of America at that time of year, and snow in the mountains?

If not March, what would be a good time? We would rather avoid crowds/peak seasons if possible.

Any insight on any of the above would be awesome - Thanks!

Arizona is pretty much desert. You can do hiking and think museums. I would contact the visitors center in the areas and see what kind of info they offer for family things to do. I remember visiting Arizona ( Scottsdale I think ) the town closed fairly early, even the eateries in town. Did you ask you daughter what it is about Arizona that she wants to see or that she heard about?

That almost sounds fun. Too many driving days and not enough touring/fun days for me. But I would love to do something like that!

Anyway, I don't know the answer to your questions but thought of a website that might help you find things to do. I love this site and use it all the time for fun things near us.

I'm just waiting for my son to be old enough for road trips! Sounds fun to me. What kind of stuff do they like? Are you more outdoorsy? Museums?

I'd make sure you make sure there's not too much driving and too little sightseeing, but I don't think you have that problem yet. And make sure to leave time for detours. I'm sure you could find books about road trips at the library. Personally, I'm all about the kitchy detours like the worlds largest ball of twine and lame stuff like that!!

The Denver zoo is nice (or was 10 year ago, lol). I also remember going to a Dinosaur dig site somewhere in Colorado (might be out of your way though).

Road trips can be pricy though. I'd sign up for some kind of hotel rewards and try to stay at the same chain every night to earn something (maybe a free night).

DH and I did Sedona in Arizona last December. Awesome weather and Sedona was beautiful. Phoenix was a bit grayer than I liked. Loved all the cheap, awesome resorts all over the place though - reminded me of Florida :) That said, we went in mid Dec right before the peak season.

March might still be cold for many of the places you mentioned. So depends on your tolerance for snow and ice.

The whole idea of the road trip sounds like tons of fun.

Arizona and the Four Corners area (Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah) have tons to offer, especially for anyone interested in history, geology, and natural beauty.

I'd figure out what interests her (and you) most, then create a "best of the best" list based on those interests.

If you're a AAA member, request the Indian Country map, it's an awesome resource and will give you lots of ideas.

Have you considered renting an RV and camping rather than staying in hotels? For a long trip like this, gas prices might actually make this a more expensive option than hotel rooms, but it's something to look into if it sounds like fun. Plus campgrounds get you so much closer to the action - staying at hotels make visits to some places feel more like you're on the outside looking in - where camping you're in the middle of things.

I'll start with the area that we know best:

Day 3: Travel to Albuquerque/Santa Fe - Stay in Santa Fe, it's a really neat town - very artistic with plenty of Spanish history - some Native American history, but this isn't the best place for that.

Day 4: Flagstaff Az - relax at pool - Or drive 30 more miles South and stay in Sedona - amazingly beautiful.

Day 5: Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim, obviously!) - this will be a day trip unless anyone has any fantastic, budget friendly ideas? - Camping is the only cheap way to stay in the park. If that's not an option, drive North to Kanab and stay there

Day 6: Any other fun stuff to do in this area of AZ? Ghost towns, maybe? - Do Zion National Park today, spend the night in Kanab or Page.

Day 7: Start heading toward Denver - Head towards Cortez Colorado, spend the day in Hovenweep National Monument, our favorite prehistoric native village complex. This one is still quiet and very un-commercial. We've been to all the biggies (Canyon De Chelly, Chaco Canyon, Mesa Verde, etc etc) and this is our favorite.

Day 8: Denver - Drive towards Denver, drive up Pike's Peak. Spend night in Denver area and see stadium in the morning or evening before - continue to Estes Park and Rocky Mountain National Park next morning.

Day 9: Possibly another day in the Denver area - Spend morning in Rocky Mtn National Park (there's some nice short hikes right outside Estes Park) before driving to spend night in Omaha.

Day 10-(maybe)11: Arrive back home after 7-8 hour drive from Omaha.

I haven't looked at the mileage for this loop, but off the top of my head this will add some miles to your days but give you tons more interesting stuff to see, and be a nice balance of history, natural beauty, and architecture.

March is the snowiest month for us in Colorado. The weather can range from 75 degrees and sunny to below zero and snowing hard. :) The Trail Ridge Road will be closed in RMNP until Memorial Day Weekend...you can drive part of the way up but can't drive to the Winter Park side of the Park.

Just FYI

Hadn't thought of that - we usually go in May or in September if we're on the bikes. Yes, everything above 4,000' will probably still have a decent snow load!

Thanks for the ideas!! Keep them coming!!

To answer some of the questions:

DD wants to see lizards. LOL Seriously. That is what she told me when I asked why she wanted to go to AZ so badly. (like we didn't see plenty of those in Florida!!) She also likes "landforms", too, so anything we can see that is not pine forests in Michigan or flat boring miles of houses and buildings (or miles of rush hour traffic!) like in Illinois.

We are a family that likes to do things we have never done before. Whether it is inside or outside, we love new experiences. On our first family trip to FL a couple years ago, we all did ziplining, indoor skydiving, the beach, a Detroit Tigers spring training game, WDW, etc. We are equally as happy at the movie theater, the beach, hiking, camping, etc. The only thing the kids do NOT like is going shopping with us LOL Well, the boys anyway. DD loves her mom-DD shopping trips. Personally I am a sucker for anything steeped in history, and make the kids do it with me. They are usually pretty good about it.

The kids were super interested in things like the world's largest ball of twine and things like that. We would love to hop on Route 66 (it runs right through our suburb here in IL!) for a while out west so if anyone knows were a good place for that is, I would love to hear it!

We are thinking that we will keep the day driving to 3-4 hour stretches, and depending on the timing either stop for the day (like start driving at 6am, stop somewhere for the day at 10am, do a fun activity or sightseeing, then hop back in the car for another 3-4 hours to a hotel for the night), or drive a 7-8 hour stretch right through either very early in the morning, or in the later evening, so even though we will be driving many of the days, we will not be driving the whole day away. Does that make sense? Being in the information gathering stage at this point, I do not have a set schedule of where we would be, but your ideas have certainly helped!! I would love to hear more!

Arches National Park?

Bryce Canyon?

Zion National Park?

Durango & Silverton Railroad?

These are all things we're going to hit in our 'Vegas to Denver' trip in June-July! Yep, it'll be hotter than Hades but it's when we can go! We're all very excited!

Durango and Silverton is awesome! Get your tickets in advance.

If you want a train ride outside of Denver, the Georgetown Loop RR is awesome and not a far drive on 70 west of Denver. There is a great train museum in Golden as well.

That's what I was afraid of. I am more of a high 60's-70's person LOL, and I would be terrified to drive in a snowstorm in the mountains. Worse, I would be even MORE terrified of being in the passenger seat with DH driving in a snowstorm through the mountains!

I would rather go in the summer - May would be awesome, but DS will be in high school next year and I do not want to take him out for a 10 day trip. One or two day or a long weekend here and there I am OK with, but almost two weeks, not so much! I'll have to check our schedules and see when DS's football summer clinics starts. I will get a better idea after this summer, so hopefully it will all work out.

The Memphis Zoo is great! If not hitting another zoo on the trip, I'd pick that over Mud Island.

Definitely get some BBQ for dinner (or lunch!) I suggest Central BBQ. They have a few locations for wherever you maybe staying.

Also, check to see if the Memphis Redbirds (Triple A affiliate of the STL Cardinals) are playing that day/night. The games are fun, ballpark is in the middle of downtown and tix are inexpensive (esp if you sit on the grassy lawn!)

Across from Autozone Park (baseball stadium) is The Peabody. You can check out the famous Peabody ducks. (My friend's dad is the Duckmaster!)

I think this is totally fun! DS 10 became fascinated with Maryland this year, through the Baltimore Ravens, but he became interested in the state and chose it for his state report in school. Partly as a result, we are visiting Baltimore next year after our Universal/Sea World trip.

DD 10 did Hawaii for her state report. Alas, it is less budget friendly, but we do have DVC, so we may make it out there someday...

Early June is the best time to avoid the snow and have a better chance of the road being open. No guarantee it won't snow then but its a lesser chance. :) Lots of baby wildlife like elk and moose in June as well.

Day 2: Travel to Oklahoma City, spend night - Anything interesting for families there? The Oklahoma City bombing memorial is very poignant. The Noble Museum on the OU campus is awesome...my kids loved it.

It's not budget, but a Pink Jeep Tour in Sedona was a highlight of our trip to the Grand Canyon. We did a day trip to the South Rim, and had an awesome picnic at Hermit's Rest practically on the rim of the canyon. And definitely stay for the sunset!

Day 6: Any other fun stuff to do in this area of AZ? Ghost towns, maybe?

Day 7: Start heading toward Denver - anywhere in between that we should see/stop? I live in Denver. Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs is amazing. There is also the Great Sand Dunes National Park not too terribly far off of I-25 in southern Colorado that we've been wanting to go to for awhile...my DD wants to tube down the sand dunes!

Day 8: Denver - DS wants to continue his quest of touring every NFL stadium in the country, so we will probably do that. Anything else fun for families? The Denver Zoo is nice, but if you are driving through Omaha, the Doorly Zoo is one of the top zoos in the country. The downtown Denver aquarium is fun, and the restaurant is really good there! There's a free candy factory tour that short but fun (with free samples at the end) in Denver (Hammond Candies), and Celestial Seasonings in Boulder also offers free tours. The Denver Mint also offers free tours, but you may need to reserve in advance for that.

Your family's interests sound quite a bit like ours - we love experiencing new things and seeing neat stuff.

Be sure to look at smaller towns and back roads for more "local" feel, we use the interstates for long-distance travel, but once we're in an area we love following the road less traveled - less Starbucks, more Largest Ball of String kind of things :thumbsup2

If you're interested, you can check out some of the photos we've taken in the areas you're thinking of visiting.

Omaha has an amazing zoo. If you can spend the day there, it is definitely worth your time.

My hubby & I road tripped from Omaha to Phoenix & back 2 years ago. We especially loved our time in the Grand Canyon. We underestimated all the stops we would want to take along the canyon after leaving our room on the south rim & heading North. There are so many amazing views as you drive. Be sure to allow enough time to stop and see lots of the scenic viewpoints. The canyon looks different every time you stop!

Based on my experiences, I would recommend adding a couple of days to your trip if you can. It looks like a lot of driving with not quite enough time to explore! We prefer to drive over flying too, but you have to give yourself enough time off of driving to keep it bearable.

Good luck & have fun. I am in the early stages of planning a road trip from Omaha-Chicago-Cleveland-Pittsburgh-DC-Philly-New York. We are hitting all the baseball stadiums & I hoping to visit 9 on this trip!

There is a kool aid museum SOMEwhere in Nebraska that my friend recommends if you're looking for something a little different.
