We will be going to DL in April and will be driving, again. This time it will just be me, my sister-in-law and our kids, ages 15, 11, 9, 8, 5, 4, 3, and 2. I have a 15 passenger van. We will leave as early in the day as possible, drive until dark or bedtime, stay the night and then finish the trip the next morning. We plan on stopping every couple of hours for the kids to run and explore.
If you have time, contact the states you will be driving through to get their tourist travel guides, or look it up online. You will be able to find historic places that you can stop or scenic overlooks. This way the kids will be entertained, educated, and exercised!
If your kids are apt to car sickness, make sure they don't stare out the window or read too long. I always take sprite or ginger ale to help queasy tummies.
Most of all be flexible!! Your kids will tell you when they need to stop, listen to them to avoid accidents. When you get to DL, take an extra set of clothes for the kids, mine tend to get excited and sometimes "forget" they need to use the bathroom.
