Aside from gasoline, smartypants!

Ok, so my parents always told me to be sure to change the oil before a long car trip, even if it was early to do so, something about the nice, new, clean oil "really getting in there" during the lonnnnggg drive... which would somehow benefit the engine/vehicle and increase its lifespan

So 1- is that true? Because we're leaving for Disney in 34 days (not that I'm counting) and I probably won't be "due" yet, but if it's actually good/worthwhile, I don't mind

And 2- there are alllll kinds of things you can buy to add to the gas... is there anything out there that would be worthwhile to add to the tank of a 70k/ish 2008 minivan for a long drive?

I mean if I'm going to spend eternity driving, why not do something beneficial for the car while I'm at it.

Ideas?

The main reason to do the oil change is to make sure you don't have to deal with it while on vacation. If that's not an issue, don't bother IMO.

Ditto with fuel additives. Don't bother.

*DO* have a mechanic give your car a good once-over regarding brakes, hoses, and belts to see if anything needs replacing soon.

I think another reason for an oil change just prior to a long trip... better gas mileage. Along with the oil change, a filter change will really help with good gas mileage.

Don't add anything to your fuel. NO fuel additives. I've heard of majorly gunked up engines from those products.

My only other tip would be a tire rotation/inspection. Don't want to be traveling on worn tires!

OH, ok, one more tip, I was wrong. LOL! Have the A/C checked if you're going during the warmer months. AND.... your car's coolant levels. Don't want the engine overheating.

Unless you'll be due for an oil change before you get back, don't bother.

I do add some fuel injector cleaner to the gas tank every now and then. You can get a big bottle of it for about $5 and it actually does improve your mileage.

Fuel injector cleaner can wash crud down into your engine. I recommend running it through just prior to doing an oil change.

Thanks!

Yeah, I just got the tires replaced yesterday, it was due for that and an oil change, and while I was picking it up I saw all those "add this to your gas tank" things and thought I'd ask.

I ran my last car into the ground until it wasn't worth it to fix it anymore, and I fully intend to do the same thing with this one :)

Thanks for the advice!
