Road trip- any ideas?

Another idea could be a Florida road trip, that is if we would ever make it out of WDW ;)

Any recommendations for such a trip? How much should I budget for meals for 2 adults and 4 kids (2,5,10 and 12)? What would be realistic to spend on accomodation?

Thanks again.

Florida road trip? Realistic accomodations. Hmmm 6 people, two rooms every night. Budget? Don't come to Florida for Easter and even think the word, "budget." It's crawling with tourists and demand is high so prices are too. We have these great fast food places here and I'd budget $25-$30 per lunch at one of them(McDonalds, Wendy's and so forth) or you could picnic with a loaf of bread, a two litre and a bag of apples with peanut butter for $15. If you want to eat a real sit down meal of say Applebee(they serve an adult beverage but no linen on the table) budget minimum $50 and that's sharing food. Room rates are all over the place. Where do you stay at WDW? What kind of rooms did you use in California? The Everglades are really cool but no hotels right there. You'd stay in Miami or Ft. Lauderdale and drive in. I love the Keys. Maybe what you need is a reservation in three condos for one week each and to do day trips in Florida. I'd recommend Daytona(Space Center, WDW,St. Augustine), Miami/Ft. Lauderdale (Everglades, Keys,South Beach) and Tampa/Clearwater(Sarasota, Busch Gardens, a visit to Ft. Meyers and the home/research site of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, great beach visits). You might even consider renting an RV if you're staying in Florida. Take your room with you and keep breakfast and lunch simple.

Wow, $30 for a fast food meal sounds a lot. Do motels/hotels with 2 double beds usually have options for a rollaway bed as well? If that would be possible, 1 room would be enough.
We stayed at Embassy Suites in Anaheim, California and at a motel with 2 double beds and a crib in San Diego. Was fine!

How about starting in NYC to DC through the Smokies down/over to Savannah, GA to St Augestine ending at WDW.

If you want to fly into Boston, you could stay there for a few days, see the sights, and then drive down to Cape Cod and spend some time there and/or you could go over and visit the islands of Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. There are ferries from the Cape that go over to both islands and also between the two islands and they accommodate cars. On Nantucket, you could rent bikes and see the whole island in a day; the Vineyard is larger, but has a pretty good bus system to get around if you don't want to take your car over. Each island is different, but both have some great B&Bs, good eating and shouldn't be too crowded if you travel before the July 4th weekend. Every place in New England gets pretty crowded after that. From there, you could drive to New York City for a few days and then fly home from there. If you're doing 3-4 weeks, you could also fit in the Maine coastline which is very different from Cape Cod. We love Maine. They have some great shopping too and don't forget the lobster!

Oh, wow, 3 or 4 weeks just to explore? Sounds like a lot of fun.

Ok, here's what I would do. I would pick 4 or 5 different areas to go through. Find the starting point and the ending point for each. Then decide if you want to see a lot of things, or really go through and see a few things well.
On each route I'd list all the things that you could possibly see and how much time you think it'll take for it. I'd try to make sure that there are things for everyone to see. For example, if all there is on one route is historical landmarks, I might be tempted to skip that route.
Anyway, after all that, I'd have a vote. :)

Orlando is only about 600 miles from New Orleans. New Orleans is truly a unique city and you could visit the Gulf doast beach areas of Destin and Pensacola (FL), Gulf Shores (Alabama), Mississippi Gulf Coast (Ocean Springs, Biloxi, Gulfport) and then on to New Orleans. You could go back via Jackson (MS), Memphis (Tennessee) and Atlanta (Georgia) and then back to Orlando. That would be a unique adventure. You could also manage side trips to Natchez and Vicksburg (MS) which have a lot of historical things to see.

We are now considering flying into NY, maybe spending 5 days there, then taking 12 days to drive down to Florida and spending the last 5 days at WDW. Any comments/ideas of places to see on the way?
