Hi everyone! I just booked a one-bedroom lake view direct from Disney at Bay Lake in mid-May. We stayed here in June 2018 and it was great. It's 5 of us, two adults and 3 adult/adultish children. Loved being able to walk to MK. We drove to the other three resorts. (We may have taken the monorail to Epcot once?)

I am reconsidering the Riviera which didn't exist on our last trip (nor did the skyliner which they were building). The Riviera could cost less (standard view) or only a few dollars more for a preferred view. I've read some old posts and it sounds like a lot of the standard views are very decent, so that could be a nice price savings for us if we went that route.

For anyone familiar with both resorts, how will the sleeping be at Riviera? Looks like a murphy bed at RR versus hidabed at BL, which is good for two of my kids, and another drop down murphy style bed at RR versus the chair bed at BL (which would be a 17 year old who is 6'2" using). Is the little murphy bed decent sized and/or at least comparable to the chair bed? Or is it too tiny for an adult?

My other concern is the one bathroom....at RR it looks to be "sort of" two bathroom areas in one, meaning some components can be separated by a door, but only one of the bathroom areas has a toilet (ie one toilet for 5 people). Is this a deal breaker for five adults?? I worry that it is.

Finally, how do the transportation options at RR work? We can do the skyliner to Epcot and to HS, and we'd drive to AK. How do we get to MK, drive? Or??? I seem to recall if you drive to MK you still have to take a monorail in from the parking lot? Is that correct?

Can we walk to Carribean and use their restaurants etc. Are the restaurant options at RR and Carribean good? We only ate at the California Grill on our first night at Contemporary and ate breakfast in our villa and our other meals in the resorts...it didn't seem like there were a lot of exciting options at BL and Contemporary, really.

We used the pool a couple times at BL, and it was good for us. How do the pools at RR compare?

I guess the real question is, do we go with what worked, even though it might be kind of boring to do the same thing again but is a sure thing that we enjoyed, or do we try something new and if we don't like it as well we chalk it up to experience! Help! Lots of questions here, if you can advise on any of my questions, I'd sure appreciate it. I know I've asked about 20 questions in this post!

We are a west coast family who typically goes to DLR, the DW trips are quite expensive and a splurge, and we feel so uninformed and so newbie which causes me a lot of anxiety since I feel like such an expert at DLR!! The helpful insight here really helps.

Thank you!

With 5 in the room, bay lake would be better with the two full baths. Being able to walk to magic kingdom from bay lake is so great (you can take a bus from riviera which would drop off right by the front gates as opposed to driving which you still have to take the monorail or ferry at the ticket and transportation center).

I can’t compare as I have only stayed Riv 1 bedroom. Fwiw…

I’ve stayed RIV twice with my fam of 5 adults. The bathroom is unfortunate. There is a tub and sink off the master but the only shower is with the only toilet (another sink is there so no sink issues lol). For easy access to EP we find it worth the hassle (basically just needed to remember to check in with others before showering to make sure we had no shower/toilet conflicts 😂). The one person drop down bed (twin-ish size?) in the living room is ok for my 6ft brother so I think 6’2” would be ok. Just take the bus to MK from RIV. It’s like a 15 min ride and it drops you off in front of MK, no TTC nonsense.

Will you have park hoppers? If not maybe stick with BLT. If yes I vote RIV. We do dinner in Epcot almost every night with 5 adults so easy access to International Gateway is great. Easy access to MK wouldn’t be as useful to us as EP is- but that just depends on where your crew spends their time.

To throw out something different- how about a split stay with both? That would be my ideal here. Coming from CA myself I thought people were crazy for doing that but after doing it once at WDW I’m addicted. Easy access to 3 parks is nice with an MK/EP hotel split. Mid-trip pack up and drop bags at bell services, go to the park for the day and from the park go to your next hotel and meet your bags there. Bell Services will transfer them for you! Also with Disney seriously slacking in the housekeeping department (every 2 days they do trash and towels- that’s it no matter how long your stay) this would give you a fully cleaned room partway through your trip. Not a small detail when teens are involved 😂

Love hearing your perspective with a similar sized (and aged) family. The bathroom could be a dealbreaker, but I do like what you have to say!! I don't know if my husband would be down with a switch mid-stay since we are only going for five nights, BUT, and it's a big BUT, I'm definitely intrigued. Especially given the housekeeping comments haha!

We will get hoppers, and we DID do Epcot every night for dinner on our last trip, and we did wistfully notice people coming from Boardwalk/Yacht Club and thought that'd be cool. Those locations aren't available/don't work for our party size, so this would be a similarly convenient stay for that reason.

Hmmmmmmm. It's got me thinking.

Thanks everyone keep it coming!!

Forgot one thing- you mentioned preferring to drive to the parks. Do know WDW has not brought back their parking lot trams and has made no announcements about a return. (DLR announced a winter 2022 return while WDW remained silent 😔).

OOOOOF. Good point. Yeah it's a long long walk from the parking garage at DLR. Kills you at the end of the day!! This could be another point in favor of RIV. Only drive to AK that way...

When we went in 2018 we took a trip to Cocoa Beach for a couple days afterward, so it made sense to have a car. This time we are only coming to DW. Maybe we do a shuttle to the resort and then have NO car? IDK. That probably makes way more sense.

Any possibility of upgrading to a 2-bedroom standard view at BLT? That extra room will give you FOUR extra places to sleep and a 3rd bathroom. Your adult-ish children will be eternally grateful that they do not have to sleep on a hide-a-bed or a chair.

I considered it, but it's too expensive. They would sleep on the floor to go to DW haha. They are adults but still kids!!

I get it! They might also appreciate an air mattress in case one of the beds is too small. We did that once and our kids really liked it, as not only was it more comfortable, they didn't have to share a bed with their sibling. We just bought two cheap twins at walmart for like $15 each, and it was well worth it.

OK, thank you everyone! Based on some of these replies especially @gottalovepluto's (so happy you have the same family size/age to compare!), we are leaning toward the RIV now. DH says two bathrooms was a luxury, and "we go to Epcot every night, we don't go to MK every day" and he really was pretty interested in staying closer to Epcot after our last trip. Also it might be nice to have "real" beds for the kids per the other commenters versus hidabed/chair beds. We will just have to manage the toilet situation :) and this way, we won't be constantly comparing trips either, having a new experience.

DH's followup question was about restaurants and pools. How is the RIV pool, and what is the restaurant scene like? We likely will only go to dinner at the resort on our first night before we have park tickets. Also how are the restaurants at Carribean, and is it an easy stroll over there?

The pools at RIV are very nice IMO. Not as huge or elaborate as some of the pools but very comfy loungers and a great pool bar (Bar Riva). Restaurants are subjective but a lot of people rate the dining at RIV pretty high. Walk to Caribbean is probably 10 min, or it's one stop over on the Skyliner.

I recommend watching some of the many resort tour videos on YouTube. those will give you a pretty good feel for the amenities and restaurants. Enjoy your stay, sounds like a fun trip!

I stay at both, and I love RIV for the pool, dining, easy walk to CBR for more food and drink options but mostly for the easy way to get to/from Epcot that opens up a lot more options than at BLT.

It is my top resort and we will stay there now every trip, especially in 1 bedrooms. As an owner, getting SV will be easier and save the points against other places we would choose!!!

Awesome, it sounds like I'll be changing my reservation. Initially I was hesitant as it looked kind of isolated but with understanding the skyliner a bit more that changed things. I like having the Carribean to walk over to for more options as well if we want. I did watch a couple videos and read some other posts about the restaurants and it really does sound like our thing. Paris is one of my favorite places, so the Euro vibe is kinda cool!

Having some nice places to relax is key, we don't need a lot of hype--we have adult kiddos and we get all the hype we need in the parks!

The Quiet pool might be your family’s jam. I love to sit in the hot tub soaking in the RIV vibe and watching the Skyliner off in the distance from the quiet pool’s hot tub. The pool itself was never very busy in the afternoon so there were always loungers together and plenty of space to enjoy yourself in the pool. The hot tub got busy at night though. The pool area was quiet to us and pretty kid-free as all the fun kid stuff is at the other pool (slide, water play area).

If you want your hotel dinner at the table service restaurant, Topolino’s, book your reservation when your reservation window opens. It’s a very popular place.

I will make a note to do so along with all the other reservations I'm going to want at the 60 day mark! And the quiet pool sounds perfect. Thanks!

If you're booking with cash, DFB ranked RIV dead last. You might look into renting points or even booking next door at Caribbean Beach. You might be able to get two rooms there for the cost of the 1BR.

My brief opinion:
BLT has these advantages:
-Second toilet
-Proximity to Magic Kingdom, for MK-heavy guests
-Monorail to 2 other deluxe resorts for dining options, etc.

RIV advantages:
-Nicer rooms, slightly larger rooms
-Better beds
-Better pools
-Dining and amenities in the same building
-Proximity to DHS and Epcot
-Only 1 toilet, but 2 showers

And yes, you can walk over to Caribbean Beach. Sebastian's is actually one of the best value dinners you'll find at WDW.

Only 1 toilet, but 2 showers
I’m pretty sure the one bedroom only has one shower and one bubble tub. The studio has a shower and a tub/shower combo. Go figure. what were they thinking ? The bathroom setup at BLT one bedrooms is far superior.

That being said, we also stay at both many times. For your family, extra toilet aside, I vote Riviera. Getting to MK via bus is not a hassle at all. It is also an easy bus ride to Disney Springs. Under no circumstances would I drive there. So busy. And I really dislike the pool at BLT. Small and cold.
