According to my "Walt Disney World For Kids" 2004 guide, River Country was closed until the spring of this year. Has anyone been recently--is it open now?

Thanks!

It closed shortly after 9/11 and hasn't been opened since. We were at WDW just a couple weeks before 9/11 and it was opened then.

It was open July 4, 2003, but I think just for one day--maybe 2. Does it still open on holidays when they expect capacity crowds at the other water parks?

I'm probably in the (vast?) minority here but River Country was my favorite of the 3 water parks. I just loved the "woodsy watering hole" theming. Once when we were there, Goofy was swimming in long old-fashioned trunks. We had a wonderful day there and I do wish it would re-open!

No, River Country is not open and there has been no official word on when or if it will reopen.

Sad to say but it is closed.

I think WDW and many other companies used 9/11 as an excuse to execute many corporate decisions they could otherwise not justify.

I thought they closed it for good around 1998. I wanted to go then, but it was closed.

I disagree, in this case. Everyone needs to think back to a month or so before September 11. Park attendance was down already. The tourism industry was already in a slump.

I looked back. There is a post from September 9 of someone upset that River Country was scheduled to be closed for the season.

With the further slump in leisure travel, I am sure Disney made the decision to help bolster attendance to the other, newer water parks by leaving River Country closed.

This, aside from all the rumors of unsafe water and the like.

River Country actually closed Labor Day 2001 for the seasonal close but never reopened. I used to go at least once a week when it was open. Here is a photo I took about a month ago.

This was also our favorite water park. I am so dissappointed that they have not reopened it. It was the first water park in the US. It is a shame to keep it closed.

With the lack luster pools at FW, wouldn't it be great for them to use the RC area for a wonderful themed pool to be used by FW guests? JM2C.

It's too bad that it is closed. I have heard a lot about it but never been. I've never been to any of the waterparks at WDW, but the theme for RC sounds like a perfect fit for me. I gew up in Michigan swimming in the AuSable river. There always seems to be the rumor that it will reopen, but it never does. The fact that they haven't bulldozed it is promising though, isn't it?

Hi Terri, I think that is an awesome idea!!

We loved the pool at River Country, it was the only on property that you could dive in, it was very deep, and it was olways cool even in the summer, when all of the other pool feel like bath water. I do wish that they would just have the pool open for the campground and Wilderness Lodge....

I never got to go to River Country. Sounds like it was so much fun that now I wish I had!!

I though they closed it because of fresh water parasites in the water that attacks the brain??

River Country was closed due to parasites in the water. That is also why there is no swimming at the beaches at Fort Wilderness or at any of the lake side resorts. It is unsafe to be in the water.
