Rita - this is depressing

Houston is well inland and won't flood like New Orleans. Plus New Orleans is NOT destroyed. Parts are but those where people are being allowed back in never flooded and are doing quite well.

I've been through a category 3 in Houston and I'm way more worried about Galveston than Houston. The city government in Galveston has already activated their emergency response just in case. Galveston basically has two bridges and one ferry to get off the island and total evacuation would be a nightmare.

Anyway, I really wish that it wouldn't hit anywhere. :(

I went back and read the whole thread after I posted. Two people here, I am wondering, if you saw a puppy hit by a car, would you go up to it and kick it, just in case it were not down enough??? That was wrong.

If I had a choice to kick my puppy or your injured one, I'd have to say, your dog would receive a bruise. No point in hoping for the spread of hurricane damage.

Now that was just WRONG!

I understand your thinking on the whole Rita thing...and could even agree with you on that point of spreading the devastation.....of course I would rather see it fizzle out to the great nowhere as well....

but that comment was just NOT right....and very cruel.

This is unbelieveable. Just when you feel like you are starting to put it back together again...*sigh*. All we can do is sit and wait. I was supposed to be in WDW starting this Friday. If I have to run again, I swear this is where I may go. All I really want to do is head home.

I can't believe what people will say either. Personally, I wish it would not hit anywhere, but come on have a heart people. I don't usually get into these type of discussions, but this one has hit a nerve.

It never amazes me what people THINK, what amazes me is how they have the ability to express it in public...

Blessings to everyone in the track. May it make a southern turn on only stay on water.

Amen Robin! :goodvibes

and by the way....here's the latest track from another website that's been pretty much right on the nose with hurricane tracks

Aren't there oil refineries near Galveston? Not that oil is in any way as important as human lives, but if more refineries are damaged, what will that do our supply?

Oil already shot up. Actually, it was a record jump. $4 and something today. Expect prices to jump up.

If it hits New Orleans, it will completely flood the city again. The makeshift patches they have on the levees are not strong enough to withstand hurrican force winds. In fact, just getting too much rain may be more than they can stand at this point.

Nothing against Texas, but I hope the thing stays away from the New Orleans area entirely...or there may never again be a New Orleans.

Thanks for the good wishes for Texas....

We're screwed!

I can see where Chad is coming from...it's one thing to say "I hope it doesn't hit NOLA"....it's quite another to say "I hope it misses X and hits Y".

When hurricanes head my way...I would be offended if people said well "I hope it misses my home and hits yours instead".

And chad didn't bring up that puppy comment first. I empathisize completely with DopeyRN...my home got hit twice last year (thankfully no damage)--some homes got hit 3 times last year. But I would be offended if someone said--let it miss Miami, they had Andrew...let it go to Central Florida instead. Ummm...hello---thanks for wishing it my way in other words!

However, I live in a zone--where hurricanes can and do often pretty much do anything. The gulf is not so lucky. The only thing that really saves the gulf coast is a total disappearance of the hurricane once it enters. That is not likely. We can only hope for the best.

2 wrongs don't make a right though. I didn't care for either dog comment--and actually thought chad was clever with his point (though crass)...b/c you are essentially telling him that his dog deserves to get kicked since your dog is already down. We shouldn't be saying it should hit any particular location other than our home...just a general "I hope it doesn't come here" suffices.

There never is a fair landfall location for a hurricane to go.

Here we go again. Anytime a storm goes through the straights, we on the gulf coast of Florida could be in it's path. I'm keeping a very close eye on this one because I have an 86 year old mother who lives a block and a half off the Myakka river.

Any thoughts, my fellow gulf coasters?

I think we're in the clear, on the western coast of Florida. That high is pretty strong, which will keep it heading west, rather than curve back to the east.

That said, everyone along the gulf coast needs to keep an eye on this storm. Preliminary preparations should already be done. If not, get to it, please!

You know what? I NEVER said I wish it would hit Texas. I wish it would just disappear. I do not want it to hit anyone, and I was responding to someone saying you are already broke, so it might as well be you again.

And if people out there think the people allowed to get back into their houses did not flood, you are very wrong. I know of only 2 people in my area that did did not flood to some extent.

The hurricane is going to do what the atmosphere dictates. No one can "wish" it to one area or another.

Does anyone else see (judging by the track posted here) the twisted sick irony of the people who would be sitting in the Astrodome as Rita came ashore near Houston are for the most part the same people who were sitting in the Superdome a few weeks ago when Katrina came ashore.
