Risks of renting points

I've rented many times in the past and never had a problem. I found what appears to be a really good deal with a seller, but he has little information and few references.

Is there any insurance or assurance that I won't get screwed? Or more to the point, is there any payment method that I would have recourse if I got screwed?

If you're getting a bad vibe from this member, my advice is to walk away. If something seems to good to be true, it probably is.

Renting is always an exercise in trust. If you do not trust this member, then walk away & find another. Conversely if a member who is renting does not trust the person they are renting to, they too should not make the deal.

I would always avoid someone who doesn't communicate fully or well. If they aren't giving you good information or responding when you are trying to give them money, then how will they be when there is a problem?

I rented from someone in January, and when I get her on the phone she's very nice, but she is so slow at responding to emails. I've sent her 2 since Monday and heard nothing back.

Trust is the biggest aspect of renting and I agree, if you are concerned at all about that, its not a good situation to be in with someone.

And, if getting answers quickly is important to you, then definitely make that one of the questions when discussing potential rental with an owner to get a feel if they are going to be responsive to your needs the way you need them to.

Remember the saying "if it is too good to be true, then it is not true", it the deal is not in the normal range of what is currently being offered, I would be leary.

Also check out doing the payment through pay pal. They do offer guarantees for purchasing items, they may offer it for services also.

Do you have her information where you can at least do a little checking? Name? Search the deeds on OCC website to make sure she at least owns. Google search her name to see if she comes up in any online databases? Ask for phone number and trace that to see if it matches name in online listing? Do a search of online social networks to see what else you can find and if it matches other data? Any online listing for this persons job that can match data? Are they registered or licensed anywhere that would show online listings ? (doctor, lawyer, real estate agent, teacher, etc). A few things that are surely not foolproof but help a little in putting the pieces together.

From paypal's website:

Purchase Protection does not cover certain kinds of purchases. These include: digital goods (intangible items), services, real estate, motorized vehicles (of any kind), custom made items, travel tickets, industrial machinery (for manufacturing), prepaid cards, or items that violate our policies or eBay’s policies (stuff that’s usually prohibited by law anyway). Purchase Protection also does not cover items that you purchase in person, or money you send to friends and family.

You also have to open the dispute within 45 days of the transaction.

Even if it's legit, it may be a RCI exchange. There are ways to get more comfortable (or less depending) but I'd agree that if you're uncomfortable, it's best to just move on.

The OCC website only works for members who own in Orange County, FL. If they own VB, HHI, Aulani, GCV, they won't be there.

And if there is mention of a $95 fee due at check in, that's an RCI trade. Not permitted to be sold.

Paypal does not offer any protection, only convenience.

As to 100% assurance, it does not exist in renting. Until you check in the reservation belongs to the member.

I would suggest, you find someone you can communicate with by phone after initial contact or use a broker.

This is the reason why I choose to buy into DVC. One bad transaction is a lot of money to swallow.

There is a lot of trust that needs to be there for both ends. I've rented my points in the past and all transactions were wonderful but one.

That one gave me a bad vibe and I discontinued the process with the person. He was very passive-aggressive, even through email, so it was definitely not going to happen with me. I suggested to him that we should probably not work together and that there were certainly others that could rent to him. He sort of continued to harrangue me and web-searched me out which gave me the creeps. Finally, however, he got the message and went elsewhere. I hope he and the alternative renting DVC owner hit it off well, and that all were satisfied in the end!
