RIP Thanksgiving ….

Thanks for the sympathy. I'm just frustrated. Our Walmarts are open on Thanksgiving but usually just have bare bones staff. Due to the fact everyone is jumping on the bandwagon to move black Friday to now be black Thursday, it's gonna be all hands on deck for the "doorbusters" at 8:00.

I am adjusting the time we will have our meal due to the fact that my daughter is coming from out of town for the day.

I guess this is the new normal. :confused3

No tinker you are right there is no reason for any retail place to be open thanksgiving, Xmas eve after 8pm, Xmas day or Easter.

Except gas station everyone should be closed.

Yes police, fire , health, hotels, gas station and that's it.

Ill even say it and get flamed Disney parks too.

We don't need to shop on these days, shoppers need to prepare for the closure.

I know my comment isn't popular, and very simplistic in it view but really there is nothing in walmarts that I need on those days.

Op, your son isn't alone in having to work on a holiday. Think about all those in transportation, hospitality, healthcare, law enforcement, etc that work every holiday.

I have to ask, would you care that Wal-Mart will be open on thanksgiving if your ds weren't working?

You know, when talk turns to what's essential to be open on Thanksgiving, I think of something one of my bosses once said. She had relocated far from home for her first job out of college. Since she had just started, she had to work the day after Thanksgiving, and her hometown was too far away to go home for 1 day. She didn't know anyone well enough to get an invite for TG dinner, so she ended up in a restaurant that day. So while many of us would consider a restaurant to not be essential and that it should be closed on TG, for her it was essential . Yeah, she could have eaten at home, but at that point in her life, she wasn't much of a cook.

So yes, it sucks if you're the one who has to work and family has to rearrange their lives. Me, I'll be at my sister's house eating cheesecake & watching Christmas movies. I'm planning to sleep late on Black Friday too. But for those of you who like to shop - have fun.

I'm a walmart refugee. LOL. after the way they treated me and the other employees, It would take a lot for me to shop there.

any thing they do, does not surprise me.

Just think about the employees at TRU! They are opening even earlier!

Walmart isn't the devil here. TRU opens at 5, Belks at 8, somebody else at 6. Kmart actually did this first, they always had one sale on Thanksgiving and another one Black Friday.

It is really not the day, it is the occasion to get together for us so we just work around schedules.
Our company has worked every holiday for years. Since 1947 to be exact. We may start a little later on Xmas or TDay or they may not get home until New years morning. It is holiday pay and we work when all the plants are shut down and their employees are off. I am sure for the week of 4th of July they never give any thought to all the crews that are doing maintenance and repairs while they are off.
I really never gave much thought to working or not working on a holiday. We just always have had to do it.

I have to work Thanksgiving as well. I don't work anywhere even remotely essential. I work for a bank. We rotate holidays and this year it's our year to work Thanksgiving. My family and I will adjust. It is what it is.:confused3

The TRU employees can still celebrate Turkey day!! I don't understand why this is such a hard concept for people to understand. You don't always have to have the meal ON the day of. :confused3 You just make it work, like every other family that has a family member working on the holiday.

The only way to combat this problem is for all of us to REFUSE to shop on Thanksgiving. If it's a bust in sales, they won't repeat this. Regrettably, I predict it will be a huge sales day. Sad but true. Rather than be thankful for what we have, we will go out and acquire more...

And there you have it, if you don't need or want to shop on that day then all things should be closed, except for gas station I guess in case you need gas. Or Disney in case you wanted to get away and eat and shop there.

I eat at home on Thanksgiving, I don't need gas, they should all be closed that day.
I don't go to Disney during Thanksgiving break, they should be closed on Thanksgiving day.
I do however need to save some money on a number of Christmas presents and since Walmart is usually the lowest priced store, they should be open.
See, we can all play that way.

I just wonder what these companies are going to do when they run out of time to push the sales 'up' to. TRU is offering their "BF" deals on Wednesday to rewards members...

Too many people no longer care for Thanksgiving or come from a place that doesn't have it and it has no meaning to them. So those people will shop. Too bad, really. Those should be the one's that work it.

Do you work, "behind the scenes" ? I have never seen a bank open on Thanksgiving.

YOu really don't have to be insulting, it isn't a hard concept but a lot of people don't like that concept. Big difference between the two.

Every family celebrates differently. Some folks do go out for Thanksgiving. Others go on vacation (Disney, cruises, etc).

The good thing about our country is that NO ONE is forcing anyone to leave their homes and shop. We won't be this year. I feel as though I can get as good of a deal on other days besides BF. JMO.

How is it that your bank is open when thanksgiving is a federal holiday?

Sadly some companies aren't opening on Thanksgiving to boast total sales up. Online retailers are taking more and more of the share of BF sales which take away from brick and mortar stores on BF. My company has seen has seen the sales for our brick and mortar stores on BF drop each year for the past 3 years. This year we are hoping that our total sales for Thanksgiving night and then BF combined at least equal BF sales from last year.
