RIP Thanksgiving .

For some reason Thanksgiving is only ruined by Macys, or Walmart or TRU being open .

I think it is because these things have only recently been open on Thanksgiving so it is "new" and people see it is a greed (opposite of being "Thankful").

I have a feeling a lot of these workers would just miss out on a day of pay if they did not work because they do not get paid time off/holiday pay. I know I have PT employees that do not qualify for Holiday Pay and will miss out on a days pay (& TIPS) because we are closed on Thanksgiving & Christmas.

Frankly I don't think any non essential things should be open on holidays. And yes, that includes movie theaters gas stations restaurants and Disney.

Again, consumers ASK for this!!! The stores are doing what we WANT them to do. I have never been a big BF shopper, but people don't seem to mind shopping all day and night to get their "amazing" deal.

Right. Because Thanksgiving is only ruined if you have to work retail.

It is not "RIP" if you have to work gas stations or BLAH BLAH BLAH.

It is definitely NOT the same because those workers are there, by god, to help us. Their families do not count.

It is only when you have to rearrange your day that it counts.

It seems to me that most of the people outside of these companies are complaining that their employees of the stores are having to work holidays...

When i worked for Disney, i wanted to work these holidays... double time pay is better than regular time pay. Most of my co workers are the same... If you wanted these holidays off, you can always just ask for it off. if they dont give it to you, call in sick...

Its the same every year because every year people come here to complain about such and such store being open. I have yet to see one person complain that WDW and all the restaurants and stores in the parks are open that day. I get that it stinks for families who are effected, but families have been effected by it for years and have still managed to celebrate together, whether its earlier or later or on a different day.

Yes, I truly get how much it stinks to have to rearrange schedules. Throughout High School and College, I worked at both a movie theater and a Blockbuster (back when they had actual stores. ). I worked on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years Eve and New Years Day. It was what it was. We would eat dinner at noon, or open presents at 8pm, depending on what my shift was that day. But we were together.

I truly do not understand the uproar now, when this kind of thing has been going on for years. Yes, I know some of you are sick of the argument, but it's true. For me, it was over 20 years ago.

When we annouced this year there were some employees who voiced their displeasure, but there was a lot of feedback from store managers that people were asking if they could work. We are opening late enough that there is more then enough time for food, family time and football and those that are working are not only getting paid for it being a holiday but then are getting paid I think double time for the hours they actually work.

There is a petition on Change.org about us being open Thanksgiving and I was looking at the comments last night and most of the comments were from family members of employees. People were also commenting about how the people at corporate will be able to stay at home with their families while the lowly people in the stores are working. For those who think that it couldn't be any furthur from the truth. People have to staff the helpdesks, IT support, the president of the company will be in stores as well as a lot of VPs and most of the people from my department, including myself are required to be in the stores.

Walmarts were open here from 9-6 on Thanksgiving Monday. No biggie. Have dinner on a different day.

Well Thanksgiving is more than just the meal. It's the time we spend together whether its catching up, playing board games, watching the game on TV, etc. To spend the day together is one of the aspects of the holiday.

disneychrista - yes, as in my first post, I do blame the American public. If no one participates, then the retailers won't open.

It's just not Walmart, every retailer is jumping on the bandwagon and one-upping each other on the opening time. You have some opening at 10 p.m., others say they are going to join in and open at 9 p.m., while others such as Walmart are going to begin their black Thursday at 8 p.m. I'm fearing that by the time we actually get to Thanksgiving week, they'll all be opening for their big day at 6 a.m. LOL!!

Sitting down and watching football, in our family, is not truly spending time together. However, playing games is spending time together. Just because my DH works long hours doesn't mean we can't spend time together and celebrate, you just have to be creative.

If the OP's child had these hours, Op could have dinner at 7 and board games after dinner. Thanksgiving is not dead!

Right! This year, we're getting together with friends, but because some of them have shifts on Thanksgiving, we're having our supper at 5pm on the day after. We're blessed to be able to share a wonderful meal together with those who we love and at the end of the day I don't think it matters when it is celebrated. I feel this goes for any holiday.

Nope. In fact when my Daughter told me that Kohls was opening at "eight" on Thanksgiving (and she may have to work at that time) I thought she meant 8AM, not 8PM. I figured they were going to be open ON Thanksgiving Day like K-Mart has for the past 20+ years.

I remember that they were open for several hours on Thanksgiving.

Back in the 80s, I worked every Thanksgiving serving people food as a waitress. My brother worked at the movie theaters. My mom was a nurse and worked that day as well. Some how we always had great Thanksgivings and quality time together.

Nope. I remember. As well as Walgreen's and gas stations where you had to go and pick up ingredients you forgot or ran out of.

Someone has always been open.

How's this for sad? - I just tried to Google "list of stores CLOSED on Thanksgiving," and the whole first page of answers were articles about stores OPEN on Thanksgiving. I guess it really is "the new normal".

However, lots of things used to be "normal" - far bigger social ills than than extended shopping hours - and have been changed because people decided to draw the line in a new place. So if we really want to show retailers that we prefer them not to be open on Thanksgiving, lets find out who is closed, and shop there - and tell them why - during the rest of the Christmas season.

Through some creative rewording of the Google search, I managed to find out that Costco, BJ's, and Nordstrom's are bucking the trend. For those interested, I'll start another thread where we can add retailers who are closed on Thanksgiving, to make the list easier to find.
