I was very sad to hear of Pope Francis' passing this morning. I got to see him and take this photo in March 2018.

I was educated by Jesuits and they taught me how to think and not what to think. He was a remarkable Jesuit.

He lasted past Easter, which he probably wanted more than anything, so as not to ruin Easter for all the Catholics. The inner fortitude that must have taken.

May he rest in peace now.

RIP Pope Francis

I will preface this by saying I am not catholic and do not really understand what goes into the whole process but are there never any younger candidates available to be elected as new pope when the time comes?
The pope is traditionally chosen from the college of cardinals (who have been appointed by the pope). As it takes time and experience to move up in the church hierarchy (from priest to bishop, then typically from archbishop to cardinal), most of the eligible candidates that are considered are at least in their 60’s.

I don't know much about the process, but usually younger men have to work to become cardinals, working up from (I think) arch-bishops and such. There is also a quieter, hidden, very ambitious side to moving up the ranks to becoming a Pope. It's about making alliances and such. No cardinal who's been in that position for years is simply going to vote for a younger, unproven, guy who hasn't earned his stripes, so to speak.

Two popes ago, Francis was actually a favorite. Many of the men wanted to vote him in as pope. But he turned the position down, through both popes. He didn't want it back then. The then Pope, John Paul I(?) was really into all the pomp and pageantry of being a Pope, wearing all the gold & glittery capes and such. Francis was really a very humble guy and didn't think he'd be a good pope. He didn't want to do all that pageantry stuff and follow in those footsteps. When he finally became Pope, he did it his way.

It is traditional, but not required. The cardinals can choose any baptized male. They have previously chosen 6 non-cardinals for pope over the millenia, but haven't done that in about 650 years, with Pope Urban VI.

The movie, Conclave, does a good job of showing what goes on behind the scenes of electing a pope. It's available on Peacock.

A few years ago, CNN did a documentary called, "Pope: The Most Powerful Man in History". It started with Peter and worked its way through the popes, comparing and contrasting their stories to modern popes. It's available on Prime.

I was sad to see this news this morning. I am not Catholic but chose to attend a Jesuit university. Love the whole ‘be men and women for others’ edict and was very happy to see a Jesuit finally become pope.

It’s so strange, we finally got around to watching Conclave on Saturday. It will be interesting, as it always is, to see who is chosen next.

Pope John Paul became Pope at age 58. He is the longest serving Pope since the 20th century at 27 years. Very Charismatic and one of the most beloved Popes in my lifetime (70 years). A side note, one of the last persons to have audience with Pope Francis was US VP JD Vance (who is a Catholic and was in Italy to discuss trade issues).
