LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Oscar-winning actor Karl Malden, best known for his roles opposite Marlon Brando in "A Streetcar Named Desire" and "On the Waterfront," has died, officials said Wednesday. He was 97.

Malden's passing was announced by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), where he was president of the Academy for three years from 1989 to 1992.

A statement from Malden's family distributed by the Academy said the actor died at home surrounded by family members. No cause of death was disclosed.

I just heard that. :sad1: I had forgotten that he was the reverend in "Pollyanna".

ahhhh...Streets of San Francisco! Loved him in that.

Haven't heard anything about him in ages.

Awww, another beloved actor :(

I'll never forget him in Fatal Vision (story of Jeffery MacDonald, convicted of killing his wife and daughters). He was great in that movie. RIP.

I, too, remember him from the reverend in Pollyana. Pollyana brought the reverend to the point where he realized his sermons were being dictated by the negative matriarch of the town and that he had missed all the positive statements in the Bible. He did a great job of someone realizing that they had "missed the boat" in his preaching.

Yes, Pollyanna was a great movie. He was also in Gypsy and On the Waterfront, and the Matt Helm movie, Murderer's Row, although he is probably best known for The Streets of San Francisco. He was also did a gig on The West Wing.

He did many voice overs as well - he had a very distinctive voice.

So sad but he lived a long life - 97.

Quite a few of the people I work with did not know who he was either.

I was a bit surprised...with all the movies he has been in I thought everyone would know him or at least know the name.

I just watched Pollyanna a few weeks ago and boy did I like watching Streets of San Fransisco.

Loved him in Streets of San Francisco, RIP Karl.

Great actor. RIP Karl Malden. :(

It's like this is the death du jour. :sad1:

Funny. I'd just heard this and immediately went to IMDB. His performances have touched me...I was shocked to see I've only viewed 10 of his films.

Sorry, but even among his award-winning & nominated roles...I still love Keycase Milne the best. :)

RIP, KM.

Just heard on the news that Karl Malden and his wife had just celebrated their 70th anniversary this past December.
That is more amazing than the movie career!

Karl Malden was an 'actor'. He took many, many roles because 'that is my living'. He was in a lot of movies as wel as TV. Thanks, Mr. Malden.

wow-I have never even heard the name before. I must be too young, or too old :)
Couldnt tell you a film, but I had heard OF him..

You would probably recognize him if you saw him.

Very sad.
