Joey Bishop, Last of Sinatra's Rat Pack, Dead at 89

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Joey Bishop, the stone-faced comedian who found success in nightclubs, television and movies but became most famous as a member of Frank Sinatra's Rat Pack, has died at 89.

The Bronx-born standup comedian was born Joseph Abraham Gottlieb on February 3, 1918.

He was the group's last surviving member. Peter Lawford died in 1984, Sammy Davis Jr. in 1990, Dean Martin in 1995, and Sinatra in 1998.

Bishop died Wednesday night of multiple causes at his home in Newport Beach, publicist and longtime friend Warren Cowen said.

:(
Old stars are dropping like flies lately.

I remember him best for filling in for Johnny Carson on the Tonight Show

Oh, that is so sad, he was the last of the Rat Pack, right??? RIP Joey Bishop, I hope I make it to 80 and get to live it well, you did good Joey!!!!!

RIP Joey. No more Rat Pack, Joey, Peter, Dean, Sammy, and Frank. And The Other Half of the King and I went recently Deborah Ker

I have a Joey Bishop Halloween story to share. When I was a child, my grandparents lived in the same community as Mr. Bishop and my friend lived about 8 houses away. More than 30+ years ago, I remember Trick or Treating at his house. At that time, pixie sticks and penny candy was the norm. But Mr. Bishop gave out full size Hershey bars. I was so excited to get the candy bar and yelled outside his house, "this house is giving away these" while holding the coveted prize. ;) You should have heard the laughter coming from the Bishop house.

RIP Mr. Bishop.

Joey tried unsucessfully to compete with Johnny Carson with a late night show. Anyone remember who is "ed mcmahon" type - second banana - was?

He was funny guy & seemed like a good guy, but i think Joey & Peter Lawford were allowed to hang with the "rat pack" cause Frank & Dino needed someone to mix drinks & run to the store for cigarettes.

RIP Joey.

I was surprised that Regis looked as young as he did when he went National bacause I always think of him as Joey Bishop's sidekick and that show was ages and ages ago.

RIP Mr. Bishop.

Aww, very sad. I had a glass of wine in Hoboken tonight (birthplace of Sinatra) ... I am belatedly, metaphorically raising that glass in tribute to Joey!

How sad! I loved Joey Bishop - he was ahead of his time when it came to comedy. If you watch him on old episodes of What's My Line? as a panelist, his comic timing was perfect.:sad2:
