RIP JD Salinger

Voice of dissention here, but I HATED that book. Now, in all fairness, I read it as an adult in my mid-late 30's and maybe that's why, but I utterly despised the character in the book. I've never felt that strongly about a book before and I took me my surprise. I guess, to each his own.

You wrote precisely what I came here to say. I agree 100%. What a sniveling little jerk that character was. I HATED him. But, like you, I read it in my mid-late 30's. I also recently read a short story, something about Banana Fish, which I hated just as much as the book.

Glad I'm not alone. I definitely think age had a lot to do with the way I felt about the book. I also began to feel like maybe that's why all those nuts were trying to kill people while in possession of that book. It made me so angry.

Wasn't the James Earl Jones character in "Field of Dreams" modeled after Salinger? Or is that just a rumor?

In the book "Field of Dreams" the guy who builds the baseball diamond goes searching for JD Salinger, in the movie, he goes searching for whoever James Earl Jones characters name was.

I read it as a teen and thought it was okay. I read it last semester in an ad. lit. class and loved it. I got so much more out of it...the sadness at the progression of time, his confusion, the tenderness that Holden showed at times (all while being a brat, too)...
