I hope all our DISers are safe and well-away from harm and that the riots are brought under control before there's too much damage to recover from and that no more cities fall under siege.

I was reading about the riots earlier in the week and was a bit shocked to see the news this morning.

Some of the photos looked like they were taken during the Blitz.

Hope the UK DISers are ok.
Dan

They are being a bunch of silly geese over there at the moment.

I just hope they get it all figured out so the EPL games go ahead.

Some Carling cup games called off, as well as England's (pointless) friendly against Holland tomorrow. I imagine it'll settle down the next few nights and the weekends games will be mostly unaffected (although I'm on the Magic Med Cruise on Saturday so had to give my ticket for Liverpool v Sunderland away so wouldn't be too upset if that's postponed ;) ).

There was some small scale (comparatively) stuff going off in Liverpool last night but nothing like seen in London or even Birmingham.
There's some reports of trouble flaring up in pockets around the UK already tonight tho, Manchester and West Bromwich were the latest I heard.

Hoping anyone near to any flashpoint stay safe from this madness

That friendly should have never been scheduled so close to the start of the season anyway. I guess at least it provides a positive out of the whole experience, especially for Arsenal fans. RVP is due for another International injury that wrecks 5 months of his club season.

Yep, international friendly matches are a horrible time just hoping players come back uninjured!
The timing is better than it used to be, when it came after the first match of the season, but I guess the FA need to pay for Wembley somehow...;)

This was a song by The Clash made in the early 80's, and fitting for today also:

White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own
White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own

Black people gotta lot a problems
But they don't mind throwing a brick
White people go to school
Where they teach you how to be thick

An' everybody's doing
Just what they're told to
An' nobody wants
To go to jail!

White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own
White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own

All the power's in the hands
Of people rich enough to buy it
While we walk the street
Too chicken to even try it

Everybody's doing
Just what they're told to
Nobody wants
To go to jail!

White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own
White riot - I wanna riot
White riot - a riot of my own

Are you taking over
or are you taking orders?
Are you going backwards
Or are you going forwards?

Panic, by the Smiths was the one running through my mind yesterday, especially the first two lines...

Panic on the streets of London
Panic on the streets of Birmingham
I wonder to myself
Could life ever be sane again ?
The Leeds side-streets that you slip down
I wonder to myself
Hopes may rise on the Grasmere
But Honey Pie, you're not safe here
So you run down
To the safety of the town
But there's Panic on the streets of Carlisle
Dublin, Dundee, Humberside
I wonder to myself

As a Brit, I am so deeply disappointed and so, so, so angry at these people that anything I say is likely to be very un-PC. So instead, I'll just say thank you to the OP for your sentiments. :thumbsup2

thank you. sitting here in the uk I'm just so disappointed and sad that the mindless actions of the minority is what the rest of the world are seeing as what London is, and it's so not what the real spirit of the city is! my heart breaks for those who have lost their homes and businesses. I'm so angry about it all right now and angry at the parents of these young people, oh just angry and sad!
thank you for your thoughts

I work in central London and we were all told to head off home at around 3pm this afternoon

There was nothing happening near our office but the company was concerned about people getting home easily

It's sure to blow over in a day or two but then we will all be picking up the bill to clear up the mess that these mindless idiots have caused :sad2:

As someone who lived in Southern California during the Los Angeles/Rodney King riots, I can totally empathize with those in London and the surrounds. Useless destruction. Just ridiculous.

I really, REALLY hope this all settles down soon. I'm leaving for London in 2 1/2 weeks, and can't imagine trying to deal with any of this. I'm just heartbroken right now.

Sayhello

Scottish Police forces have offered to send in reinforcements. The hospitals might need extra beds for the rioters ;)

Hope our DISer cousins in England are keeping safe in these troubled times :grouphug:

This is a terrible time in England right now. Mindless criminals. This has nothing to do with politics or even Mark Duggen anymore. This is about minoirty kids in London being thugs. Kids who know nothing about education, work or paying taxes. The looting is sickening. Destroying businesses and burning homes is horrific. People jumping from their burning homes, its insane.

Stop the violence. Send in the army. Water cannons. Rubber bullets, the lot!!!

Criminals!!!

Minority kids?

The reporting I saw showed the majority of rioters, at least at the beginning, were minorities. Is that not the case? I admit I haven't been following every second of the riots.

Most definitely not 'minorities', at least not any more it's not
