Now before y'all jump on me he's already at the dr's... but I dont know if it was the right thing or not...

DS5 (aka Aidan) came home from school (K) at 4pm.. almost as soon as he stepped off the bus he complained his side was hurting.. I thought it was a cramp like you get while running. We had to walk 1 street home and by the time we got here he was in tears! Screaming, at one point rolling around on the bathroom floor :sad1:Honestly it was very scary to see him like that. Dh had both sets of keys (he took my van to get gas and took his too) so I couldn't rush to the ER right then and there... and by the time he got home Aidan was sleeping on the couch. He got up and then we went grocery shopping. He was okay still saying it hurt but not nearly as bad as when he got home. He was okay for most of the night... he ate but not like he usually does. Drank some gatorade and ch. milk.

Well at 9 he starts screaming again... I asked if it hurt while he peed he said no.. but he's a boy he might be saying that to me cuz I'm a girl ;)

So what do all the dis dr's think it is... would you have gone to the ER?

UPDATE

Okay well here is the story..:sad2: now we did ask if he got hurt he said no.. well apparently I didnt ask the question right.. he told the dr some one in his class ran into him and he had a pair of scissors in his pocket.. my child got stabbed with them why he didn't want to tell us.. I dont know.. maybe he didn't want him to get into trouble? arrrrrgggghhh now I dont know who to be mad at.. ds for not telling us.. or the kid at school? the kid who did it seems like the trouble maker of the class... time to write a note asking them to be kept apart... :headache: He just told me he didn't want to tell me because I was going to yell at him... now I'm going to yell at him... before I wouldn't have...:mad:

I probably would have, yes. I would have put in a call to our NurseDirect line first and see what she thought, but my guess is the nurse would have recommended an urgent care or ER visit.

Poor guy. I hope they figure out what's wrong and give him some pain relief.

appendix? isn't that over there...?

I hope he feels better soon! Stomach problems are no fun at all.

yes it is over there... but according to google he doesn't have any other symptom other than pain.. no nausea, no appetite loss, among other. That is why I dont know if we should have taken him or not. but once he started crying in pain again I just didn't want to wait for something worse to happen... the er's here are very quick so I hope to hear something soon... we dont have urgent care. Small towns suck for somethings.

Child screaming in pain = trip to the ER/urgent care. I can't see anyone second-guessing that decision. I don't think I would have waited so long, though, for pain on the right side of the abdomen, out of fear that it's appendicitis and that it might have burst.

Hope your DS is okay, and they get to the bottom of it soon.

Late dh was a pedi urologist. The severity of pain sounds like testicular torsion (I got to listen to those late night phone calls:rolleyes1) and though it can present with abdominal pain, that's not the usual symptom. It could also be appendix, but that should be pain in the lower right. I have a ds5 too, and it's quite possible he can't accurately describe where the pain is.

In any case, I would have definitely taken him to the ER.

I had acute pancreatitis as a teen, which presented as severe, doubled-over-in-agony pain in the upper abdomen. Any family history of ulcers?

the thing is he was playing and for awhile I thought he was faking. well not when we first got home but after grocery shopping... he was running around like nothing was wrong... I have no parents (mine are dead his we haven't spoken to his in 4 years) to ask if they think its an emergency what''s right what's wrong.. like I said elsewhere.. its so easy to be a parent when its not your kid.. there are times I just dont know what is the right thing to do or wrong.. I'm worried about him and other than appendix I dont know what else it could be.. just wondering if any one had any thoughts of what it could be.. he's there now.. just waiting for a text or call to see what's up.. I hope its nothing but it could be something :(

Doesn't matter. If he has a stone causing a blockage in his appendix he'll have pain and not necessarily other symptoms. Been there did that with my youngest for over 5 years!

well his wasn't near this bad. I'm thinking it was more of an ache than anything.. the only person in either of our families who had an ulcer was my mom.. i'm pretty sure it was because of her drinking

was the pain on and off (I'm guessing yes) I have no experience with this type of stuff.. ears, yes, throats, yes, hearts, yes. side pain.. no. I did have gall bladder attacks with my last pregnancy but his pain was no where near what I was in for those.. but I guess I can't rule those out huh? can kids get kidney stones?

Please don't think that I was trying to run you down for waiting...I also tend to be a 'wait and see' kind of mom. As you say, it's easy, in retrospect, to say that you should have taken him the first time, but if he hadn't had a second episode then people would probably have gotten on your case for over-reacting ;)!

I really hope everything is okay. Waiting for news is hard, especially when you're sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring.

Yep, he'd have the pain of appendicitis, go to the Drs, they would watch to see if he would develop a fever, etc. Within a day or so he would feel better. This went on for at least 5 years. Bouts of pain and nothing more. Drs called it chronic appendicitis. One day he popped down to the cafeteria at school (I worked there) and told me it was hurting again. He was 15 or 16 then. Took him to the Dr, they sent him to the ER for blood work. Explained it all to the ER Dr and she decided to do a CT scan.

Turns out he had stones in his appendix. So they would block it, then move and he'd be fine. Then they would shift and block again. That explained the 5 years of off and on issues. Needless to say at that point they removed it.
Out of my 4 boys 3 had to have their appendix removed. I did too later in life. Interesting.

Oh wow 5 years? :( I'm glad they finally figured it out! Like I said I have no experiance with side/tummy pain... he doesn't have a fever either which is why I did take the wait and see route.. now of course I am kicking myself for waiting so long.. Still no word from him... tick tock time goes so slow when your waiting...

Yep, 5 years. He'd have a bout and then it would go away. Months later it would happen again. the last one was almost a year so we had thought he was finally over it. The Dr had said if it was chronic appendicitis they usually grow out of it.

I hope you have some answers too. It's so hard sometimes to know the right action to do.

so I text him.. i dont like waiting... he text me back they are on their way home.. i'm guessing its nothing... they only left here at 9... yay for quick er's! i'm glad its nothing... at least this one only added a few grey hairs...

Could it be gas? I hope you hear something soon!

I asked him if he had to go ;)... he kept saying no.. on the way home from grocery shopping I said to dh if we take him to the ER and find out its gas i'm going to feel like and idiot.. thus the wait and see...well i'm glad they went no more wondering what it is... i'll find out in a few minutes what it was.. he probably has to poop :rotfl::cheer2:

Hopefully it's nothing.

A friend went to the ER & found it was just gas. His wife couldn't stop laughing at him all the way home! :rotfl:

there is an update in the OP... you'll see why we take the wait and see with him... you'd think I beat the kid.. I dont understand why he wont tell me things... i could kill him...
