Ridiculous pricing

it was our 20th anniversary, we splurged to say the least.

But we went 2 years with one vacation, when we normally do 2 every 12 months. So in reality, we had to skip 3 vacations to do one big Hawaii trip.

Just want to say that I totally agree with you. We can afford to stay deluxe, but I almost won't just out of principle. I personally think it's ridiculous what they charge for what you get. If we got some sort of amazing room like we do in Cancun, you bet I'd pay $600 a night. However even the deluxes to me are like staying at basically a $200 per night if that hotel anywhere else. I get people pay for the location, etc. etc. "supply and demand!" etc. etc. I totally get it, But honestly I just can't believe that people continue to pay it time and time again.

I will say though, we travel quite a bit so we have a lot to compare it to, and maybe many people don't. A lot of people who pay these kinds of prices go to Disney time and time again and that's their vacation of choice, and are kind of just in a Disney bubble, and prefer it that way. And there's enough people like that out there who pay $600 a night to go to the Polynesian, instead of paying $400 a night to actually GO to Hawaii!

The problem with going to Hawaii is the need to figure in the cost of the flight. We can drive to Florida in 16 hours, which is SUBSTANTIALLY cheaper than flying to Hawaii. I've priced Hawaii a couple of times, but going to Disney is always much less expensive (even staying deluxe), mostly because of the flight.

out of principle ? sorry what?

We are in the every other year cycle for Disney. 2 years ago was at Coronado Springs. Next week is at Yacht Club. We go skiing, we went to Jamica, we travel a lot.

While I agree, Disney "deluxe" is generally priced +30% over a similar room at other places. But that +30% gets you location within all of Disney World itself, as well as the amenities of your resort.

We just did 2 weeks in Hawaii (maui) last summer. That was a $12k trip. It gives me perspective when I spend $6k for 10 days at the Yacht Club. The Disney Value is so much more then just a place to sleep.

just wondering where you stayed in Hawaii

Yep, we don't fly often because it's cheaper to drive. But alas funny thing is you can fly to Vegas pretty cheap. Ok, you can fly to Orlando pretty cheap too but I still prefer to drive.

I agree! It's totally insane. Being a deluxe resort person myself I'm starting to see $500 as a bargain! Most of the monorail resorts even WITH an AP discount are still $600+. Rack rates of $800, $900, and rising every year. If we could quit going to Disney we'd be millionaires. :rotfl2:
No joke!!! We've added up what we spent on our trips to date and we could have paid off our house and then some!!

That totally depends on the time of year you are going. The Contemporary only hits $600+ rack rate over Christmas and New Years. You can get the Poly for as low as $508 a night in value season.

Try going to New York or Paris and staying in a comparable room and desirable tourist location. Then compare the entertainment value received. Disney becomes a deal. It's all about supply and demand. If you don't pay it, someone else will, though these days those someone elses have been more and more international tourist.
We stay in Jersey City when we go to NYC. Take the PATH to WTC, then take the subways all around the city. Staying in Jersey City is still almost $200 nightly, and it take 35-45 minutes to get to Manhattan and other tourist spots in NYC, on a good day. And the food cost in NYC is so much more expensive than WDW. I have stayed off-stie at WDW, but I like the convenience of staying on-site, and am willing to pay for a moderate resort.

We are going to NYC in a few weeks for a work conference for my husband. Luckily we just have to pay the upgrade fee for the room because I want to bring our son with us and the rooms that sleep 4 are a lot more than the rooms that sleep 2. We are staying in Queens though because that's where the hotel and work stuff is. Luckily the hotel offers free parking and a free shuttle to the subway station. The hotel also has a free continental breakfast but it's a 2 star hotel with good reviews, not as nice as we are used to but it's pricy to stay in the city. Food costs will be tough though and luckily my son doesn't want to do a whole lot of pricy stuff. We have a few museums that have reciprocal membership offers so those will cost us nothing. But all in all NYC is pricey even to do very little.

I consider WDW prices to be more comparable to Manhattan than Baltimore. If I wasn't traveling with Mom, I would probably be staying some place that has a shuttle such as the Buena vista suites. Saving money in other ways such as limiting myself to a TS meal a day and splitting some meals.

I haven't read the whole thread, but there are other intangibles to staying on-site at Disney I haven't seen mentioned. Where else can you stay that includes boat rides and monorail rides to and from your destinations. You are transported everywhere you want to go...and that is invaluable to our family clan of 15! Some of our most special memories and beautiful pictures are riding on those boats! Nothing like that is included anywhere else.

I'm seeing a few mentions about renting DVC points. Where is the best place to look for information about this process?

Thanks!

There is a board here with info on it. You can also google, there is at least one good company with a good cost calculator. Not sure though if I can say any names here.
