I am a big chicken when it comes to thrill rides. I absolutely hate drops and I am extremely afraid of heights, however do not mind speed. Having said this, I would like to experience a few more rides on our next trip to WDW with my two dd's (11&12) who love thrill rides. What can you tell me about Kali River Rapids, BTMRR, Test Track, Maelstrom and Dinasour? Any drops or height involved? Any rides I should definitely avoid?

Rides answered!
Kali River rapids- Small Drops but you get soaked. Perfect in Summer
BTMRR?
Test Track- thrill ride with lots of speed. NO DROPS or HEIGHT
Maelstrom- mild ride with one small drop. For small kids
Dinosaur? Dark and scary. NO DROPS or HEIGHTS
Any rides I should definitely avoid? If you have an issue with heights No Tower of Terror

Hope this helps :Pinkbounc

A definite to avoid would be the Rockin Roller Coaster if you hate drops.

BTMRR in my mind is one of the more tame rides. There are some smaller, mild drops. But I think they are fun. And it's not scary...it's fun. If you decide to do it, I would recommend sitting towards the front. Even in my super, duper chicken phase...when I wouldn't even ride the Matterhorn at DL, this was my favorite.

As the President of the chicken club, I am happy to report that you can ride Malestrom, Thunder Mountain Railroad, Kali River Rapids, (just wear your rain poncho), Dinosaur (my personal favorite), and brace yourself - Revenge of the Mummy Ride at Universal. I thought I would die while I was standing in line, but the "drops" are more like fast hills. It was intense, but it didnt feel like my stomach was being ripped out of my body. I rode it 3 times!

The rides I mentioned are the ones I was scared to ride, but did, and LOVED it. I didn't feel sick, nor regret that I got on. The one I did regret was Tower of Terror - what was I thinking? :confused3

Please feel free to PM about any other rides :teeth:

They've changed it since I was last there (one drop, and that was okay). I thought they did two or three drops now, & was planning on doing it again on my next trip. However, the Modern Marvels show on T.V. tonight said they now do SIX or EIGHT drops!!!

I've not had the pleasure (!) but I'd avoid Expedition Everest like the plague-it has a lot of drops plus when they were building it I could see how high the track was between 2 hills :scared1:

Avoid Space Mountain if you don't like drops, although its in the dark so you can't tell how high it is-I'm terrified of heights but love SM precisely because it is in the dark. I know this sounds obvious but avoid Splash Mountain and the rockets in MK. I really don;t think you'll have any problems with maelstrom, Test track, BTMRR or kali river rapids-Plus you'll feel so proud of yourself when you've done them, especially if you're sharing with your children.

Oh I forgot, avoid primevel whirl at AK-spinny and droppy-really icky! :sad2:

Now, I must be the ultimate Queen of the coaster chickens, b/c BTMRR made me cry. I hate drops and fast turns and such, so this one absolutely terrified me.

"Hello, my name is CareBlair and I am a ride weanie."

How does the drop in Pirates of the Caribbean compare to the drop at the end of Splash Mountain?

Hi CareBlair! :) No comparison. Splash Mountain is terrifying (spent the whole ride babbling to DH that he should remarry when I died on the drop). POTC is over before you even register that you're sliding (yep...more like a slide than a drop). I know people say this all the time, but really: If I can do it, anybody can.

Dinosaur has no drops really, just a lot of bouncing around. Kinda scary though.

BTMRR definitely has drops, though not BIG drops. An intermediate coaster.

Maelstrom does have a drop. It's very minor, but DS12 did complain about it the first time he rode it, so it may bother you.

If you want speed without drops, Test Track may be your best bet, though I think there is one downhill section but it's not really a "drop".

Actually, I suggest giving Rock'n'Roller coaster a try. It has incredible SPEED but not the hills and drops that traditional coasters do. I was chicken too but once I tried it, I loved it! Trust me, you won't have time to worry about height or drops on this one! :teeth:

My name is Jennifer and I, too, am a ride weenie.

I had posted here and got great advice before our most recent trip (Dec. 05) so I could attempt to participate more with DH and DS, 7.

The more you push yourself, even a little, out of your comfort zone to try more rides, the easier it gets. I will never, ever, attempt full-throttle thrill rides like Everest or ToT. But, my reward for gathering all my courage and giving Splash a try? Having DS say, on the plane ride home, that his favorite part of our trip was having me ride Splash with him! (My secret was to just take a deep breath and totally relax my body/mind, and the drop is done before you can say zippity-do-dah.) After thinking I could never conquer Splash, I went on to ride it repeatedly (and it DID get easier every time).

I also survived Test Track, Goofy's Barnstormer, Maelstrom, and Pirates (piece of cake). My lesson was that I can try the mid-range of rides at least once, survive, get a little more out of our WDW experiences and share more with DS and DH -- worth the effort!

Jennifer, this is the best advice I have seen on this thread!! I too use to be a weanie when it came to rides but now I have conquered the "biggies" at Disney. My all time favorite is still Thunder Mountain. I have done all the thrill rides except Rock N Roller coaster and loved them all. Like you said...give yourself a little push and before you know it you will be enjoying more rides at Disney.

I am probably the biggest chicken in the world. My little sister was more daring on rides at the age of five than I am at twenty- two. WDW is a great place for people like me, because there are very few rides that I avoid. Having said that, here is the list of rides that I won't do:

Space Mountain
Big Thunder (though I have heard that even I could handle this one)
Expedition Everest
Misson:Space
Tower of Terror
Rock n Roller Coaster

Other than these rides, I have enjoyed every ride and attraction at WDW! It is such a wonderful place!

For years I refused to go on ToT--

"Just look at it", I said, "You'd have to be nuts to be up there". However, I lost a bet to a family member a couple of years ago, and my payup was going on the ToT. Lo and behold, you are strapped in what is essentially a moving theatre, and the ride is not scary at all! With it's incredible theming, it is now my absolute favorite ride at WDW, and I am kicking myself for missing it for all those years.

The lesson I learned was that you have to work up the nerve to try every Disney attraction, or you risk missing out on something that you might really enjoy.

IMO, Disney does not try to make the scariest or the highest or the fastest attractions--their rides are reallly alot tamer than most amusement parks. But WDW separates themselves from the others by extraordinary theming, and it is the theming, NOT the physical thrills, that makes them fun!

have you tried rnr or space mountain? i love coasters but have to make my self get on due to height fear and neither of these are scary due to being in the dark, so you don't see the hill plus they not that high. i'd skip splash( proabably the biggest hill till ee) and i had a friend who tried to climb out of malestrom due to the hill( i don't think it's bad but she did) potc has a little hill ( actually bigger than i remembered but nothing like splash).

the only ride at wdw that kind of freaks me out is primevil whirl as it is like a wild mouse and you feel like you are going to go off the track & fall although it's not that high it kind of is a creepy feeling... but it's fun so i ride it and block it out of my mind :thumbsup2

totally agree with Jennifer( just went back and read the thread) and find this so true. i'm not really a ride weanie , just have some strong phobias in general...sometimes you need to force yourself to step outside your "comfort zone" and it might surprise you that you enjoy something more than you thought you would. and it's easier the next time you try it.

Splash Mountain is terrifying.

Boy, I'm glad somebody else feels like this about Splash. I've only ridden this ride twice. After the first time, I swore I wouldn't do it again, but my DD talked me into it several years after. The only way I got through it was to scream my head off. I am not happy with big drops. BTMR isn't too bad...but it does pop my butt up off the seat several times. I only rode Space once...never again. TOT, RnRC, Everest---nada. Interestingly enough, I LOVE Kali River Rapids and will ride it 20 times in succession---in fact, my DH and I did this in June LOL. The drop is fun...just long enough but not too long to take my breath away. The theming is awesome and it's a marvelous way to cool off. I didn't want to do it the first time, but I'm glad I did. It's a huge favorite. Pirates in WDW and Disneyland are wonderful. Maelstrom is great too. I really wish that they would develop more rides with great theming and and gentle thrills.
