Rides for bigger guests

Ok, I tried looking for this thread, I was wondering if the rides at Universal accommodate larger guests. The only ride I had trouble with last time I went was the dueling dragons. I wasn't able to get the belt fastened. How are the new rides? Did they use a little more sense and make the rides friendly for larger people like Disney has?

Both Hulk and DD have a seat in both rows 3 and 6 that is for larger guests. Its the second seat down it will have 2 belts and there is a test seat outside the attraction to see which will fit. I dont believe Dr Dooms has a larger seat but does have a test seat outside of attraction. JP is shared with 4 or so ppl accross. Bluto is just a seatbelt but they have no extenders I dont believe. Biggest issue I think would be Dudley....They do have a test seat but that seat is very low to ground and not much room it was a pain for me to get in and out of I have definately had my fill of that ride for a while.

Most rides at Universal are pretty good about who it can fit. Twister, Jaws, Earthquake, Shrek, T2 have no restraints. I believe there is a larger seat on Jimmy Neutron but if you dont fit in regular seat its pretty embarassing as they keep trying to close it and the whole audience waits for you. Mummy has no larger seat but has a test seat to try. Simpsons is shared lap bar there probably will be no issue there.

These are the test seats for Dueling Dragons and Hulk. The seats with the two buckles are the "big boy" seats and are in rows three and six of each train. There are also test seats at Revenge of the Mummy but they use a lap bar...no over the shoulder harnesses.

For Doctor Doom, there is a test seat, as all seats are the same on the towers.

For Mummy, there is a test seat. Rows 3 & 4 provide more legroom (elevated seats) which makes them more accommodating.

For Ripsaw, there is a test log. Seats 2, 3, or 4 provide sufficient legroom and are the easiest to slide into.

It makes perfect sense, since over half of the American public are now large sized people. "63% of Americans are overweight with a Body Mass Index (BMI) in excess of 25.0. -31% are obese with a BMI in excess of 30.0." Check out http://www.americansportsdata.com/obesitystats.asp
That is just good business- to accomodate your customer's needs. If people are larger now does it make any sence to keep the rides the same size? Have you ever looked at the WW1 nd WW2 uniforms? If not check out the 'average' size of people 60 years ago. 'Average' sized people not could not even possibly fit their legs into one of their uniforms, they are so small by todays standards.
Good for you Kissbfm to be asking these questions. Other people on this board want to know as well.
If you know that you are going to write something rude and possible insult somebody else, then why do it?

I have actually sat in some of the "extra room" seats a few times and I am short and have an average build, so the test seats can accomodate all sizes. ;)

I would also like to say that some people with "certain body dimensions" are above average height or are body-building types - there really is no need to be rude. :sad2:

One of the reasons I liked Universal so much when I was younger was because almost nothing had restraints so I felt more comfortable on their rides. Also the reason I refused to go to IOA for years. Had embarassment on rides at Busch Gardens with the workers having to push that bar down.

Now when you say 'larger people' what does that mean? My hubby is 6'2" and weighs 235, will he fit into the rides? I'm short, but wear a size 16 or 18---will I have any problems?

Your DH may have trouble with some rides, yes and I reccomend him trying out the test seats. Depending on what you call short, You should be fine, but I would also try out the test seats :-)

You husband should have no problem... Last trip I was roughly 265 and 6'0 and I was able to fit on all I wanted to do. I skipped Ripsaw falls as it was tight even when I was less during our last trip its just ungodly uncomfortable. His height may be an issue on that ride tbh its a low low seat. On the Simpsons he should try for a seat in front so it would be more comfortable. His weight should be fine. I am not judge of woman so idek what a size 16 is but here is a site with other experiences that may help you.

Did I miss something? I think it's good that they are investigating now before hand vs waiting and being disappointed. But I disagree with the idea that the parks should make more larger seats just because we as a society are becoming more overweight. The change should be made in our restaurant portions, ingredients, and cost of exercise. Most restaurants give you twice the food you should have. We as a society have become so unhealthy. Maybe if the simple pleasures like riding an amusement park coaster and fitting, became a bigger issue we would have to step back and take a look at what we are ingesting and allowing into our bodies.

Well I don't think restaurants give you twice the food you should have. I do think they need to start offering healthier options though. I went out last night and there was absolutely no place around besides pizza, burgers, etc that had no healthy sides. Also when you go to places that give you vegetables they drown them in butter to make it taste better. But the truth is this generation has become accustomed to being lazy and everything is much easier for us nowadays just being able to pull up at a drive through and eat at McDonalds. I often wonder what it would be like if we somehow reverted back to how it was before trying to catch food ourselves and eat it how many would be able to de-evolve and how many would just die out. I for one would probably die out. I agree with cost of working out also...Gym memberships are insane and even my ipod which I need to walk is a whole dollar each song I want.

But fact is they are a business and as a business they have to adjust to their customer-base and if they do not someone else will and will reap those benefits. Like Disney. It may not be costing big business right now but we as a nation probably will be going up before we go down so later its an issue.

"Maybe if the simple pleasures like riding an amusement park coaster and fitting, became a bigger issue we would have to step back and take a look at what we are ingesting and allowing into our bodies." - This actually got me to lose weight and watch what I was eating when I was planning a family vacation. Like I said before going out is not easy there are not a lot of healthy places around here but I have lost a lot of weight. There is more to be done but I am hoping by end of year I will make it over to Busch Gardens which I havent been to since I was a teen and had embarassing times there.

Ok I have new information about plus sized people at Universal.

I noticed signs that said if you are 51 inches around or more, you might have problems and I can say that is very accurate. (I refuse to say why I know that's accurate, but trust me lol)

This goes for the "modified seating". More than 51 inches around and you will be hard pressed to get the modified seats to buckle. Your Height really isnt as much of a factor as your girth.

Also If both you and your SO need to be modified, you can't ride together since there is only one fat seat in the row.

I'm kinda Shreck size and the only problem I got with some rides is I got huge shoulders..So I get banked up some much less the people sitting next to me!!

What is the 51" around supposed to be, hips, butt, waist or shoulders? DH has broad shoulders, could be more than 51". His waist is only about 34", so where do I measure? He has never had a problem, so I'm just kinda making a point. They need to be more specific.

I have been concerned about this, as we will be accompanied in September by a friend who is about 6'4" and weighs about 300 (my guess.) He loves coasters, so I hope that he doesn't have any problems. He had none at Disney, except his shoulders (again, really broad) might have been a little squished on RnRC.

Just have your friend try out the test seats for Hulk, DD and RoTM to see if he can make it. With him being that tall...I wouldn't think it would be a problem.

sigh... ok... I didnt want to say.... but I measured my bust area sigh bleh Arms dont play into it. It's definatly they girth of the chest area.

RnR isn't an issue because it doesnt have those blasted straps you have to attach so there is leaway...

On the upside, if you fit in one of the coasters, you should fit in them all, so no need to try them all out.

RNR is the most uncomfortable I have ever been on a coaster and I am only 6'. I couldnt imagine being 6'4" my shoulders are in so much pain after that ride. I think I remember reading that a 52" stomach plays into it as well to get it buckled and it sounds about right I believe thats what I was last I went and just fit.
