rider swap in Disneyland

Question about rider swap in Disneyland! I can’t seem to figure out exactly how this works.

If it is just my husband and I with our 3 month old, are we able to wait in line together and just take turns waiting with the baby? Or does the one with the baby have to wait outside the ride and the other person has to wait in line alone??

I have heard conflicting responses on this.
... we really don’t want to spend our one day in the park waiting separately in lines. Our 3 month old is cute - but not really a conversationalist

The short answer is that when you arrive at the attraction, you tell the greeting CM (the first one you'll encounter) that you want to ride switch. They'll send one of you through the line while the other stays with your child. After the rider finishes the ride, the other one of you will get to ride without waiting in line (you'll go through the Fast Pass entrance or other shorter line).

Since it's only two of you, there will be times when it'll be faster for each of you to use the single rider line (if there is one) so neither of you needs to wait in the long line.

FP/MP can work, too. If both parents have a FP or MP, then you can scan in the return line one at a time and go on the ride while the other parent waits with the baby.
