Dear DIS Friends,

As a community we have all been touched by the death of Kevin’s father and the overwhelming amount of grief that his family is now experiencing. There are many of us that have been looking for a way to support them all during this time. An organization that was near and dear to their hearts is the Albany County Head Start Program. This organization provides services to impoverished children in the area so that they have a "head start" on life. More information can be found later on in this post.

We have contacted Head Start and inquired about making donations in memory of Mr. Klose. Because some people may prefer to pay online or by check, we have set up two ways to donate:

1. We have set up an account through Firstgiving. This is the same site used by the Muddy Buddies for the Give Kids the World fundraiser earlier this year.

If you would like to make a donation via credit card, please use this link.

http://www.firstgiving.com/albanyheadstart

Just so everyone knows, the website does charge a transaction fee of 7.5% if you use a credit card - so a $25 donation yields $23.12 to the Albany Head Start Program. During our initial contact with them, they did approve use of this site for donations.

2. If you prefer to mail a check directly to the program, please make it payable to the Albany Community Action Partnership.

Mail to: Albany Community Action Partnership
Attn: Michelle Bowen
333 Sheridan Avenue
Albany, NY 12206

In the memo area of your check please write: Disboards-Richard Klose.

Thank you everyone for supporting this excellent cause. It is the least that we can do to help the Klose family during such a difficult time.

UPDATE: Here is some information about the Albany HS Program for those who are not familiar with its purpose and/or early childhood education. It is taken from their website at http://www.acoi.com/headstart.html.

Head Start in Albany County was first started as a pilot project in 1965. It started as a permanently-funded activity with Albany Community Action Partnership in 1966.

During the 2007-2008 school year, the Albany Community Action Partnership Head Start Program served 469 children and families including the Home-Based program. In response to the community, there are three enrollment options available.

Extended day and year classes are available at several Head Star classroom and center locations, for children whose parents work or attend school or training.

Our most recent expansion site offers full day and year services to more than thirty (30+) three year old children through a collaboration with a local day care agency.

Head Start provides comprehensive health, nutrition, dental, mental health, parent involvement, education and family services. Center-based children receive two-thirds of the recommended daily nutritional allowances through the breakfast and lunch provided at Head Start. Thirty percent (30%) of the enrolled children are diagnosed with disabilities and a full range of inclusive special education services are available.

100% of Head Start Children...

Have up-to-date immunizations
Receive a complete annual health physical
Receive annual hearing and vision screenings
Receive annual dental screenings and indicated follow-up dental work
Receive developmental education screenings and recommendations

As you know, Head Start programs create positive long-lasting outcomes by meeting critical needs and offering families new possibilities. Research shows that children who attend high quality, comprehensive, early childhood programs:

require 90% fewer special educational services;
have 45% lower adolescent pregnancy rates;
have 30% lower juvenile delinquency rate;
have higher employment rates as adults;
have higher literacy;
are less likely to be on welfare;
are more likely to attend college;
and are significantly more likely to own a home.

For every $1.00 we spend on a child in a Head Start program, we save $7.12 in future remediation costs alone. Head Start not only helps participants change the quality of their family's lives, it also helps the community.

The ACAP's Head Start Program depends on community support. The program must meet a 25% matching funds requirement. It is essential that resource use is maximized to ensure the optimal and efficient provision of essential services.

This is the most amazing thing and I can not thank you enough.

This is a cause that is very dear to my family.

My Mom was the Executive Director of the agency that funded the Head Start program in Albany County for many, many years..

One of the Head Start schools in Abany is named the Ann Klose First School.

This made my Dad very proud.

He would be thrilled to think that he was helping in some way.

Thank you again.

I'm so pleased that you are supporting this, Kevin. I know that you are a private person and I was nervous about posting this. I know it will bring about so much good in the world where such a tragedy took place. As a teacher, head start programs are invaluable to children's learning and development. They are an asset to communities everywhere.

Once again, the power of the great people here on the DIS will come through and effect change. That helps me sleep better at night and I hope it can bring some comfort to your family too.

Kevin,

Just wanted to say I echo what NikkiBell said. I was so nervous that you would be offended that I was looking into giving this information out to the group. I'm happy that you are okay with it.

To everyone else...
I will be up early tomorrow to contact them to figure out what we can do to get something set up. It appears that they do have the ability to take donations online. So I'm hoping we can set up a "Disboards" group that all our names can go into. If that doesn't work Nikki and I have discussed working out a way to track all us Dissers who have donated. Hopefully I will have something up on the boards by early tomorrow morning.

Suzette aka Stitchlover

Thank you both for doing this.

Kevin, you and your family were on my mind all weekend. :hug:

This is great - I was getting ready to send out a check today but this is much better to have one big group donation.

Thank you Nikki and Suzette.

If there is one thing that this group does well is come together during difficult times.

I know I'm an unknown on the boards but let me know if there is anything I can do as I live relatively close to Albany (about an hour away).

This is an awesome idea. I have made my donation on-line So happy to be able to show support. Karen A
