Maybe this should go to the rumors board I'm not sure, but someone here may know if this is real or fiction.
I have heard that in order to discourage guests from abusing the mug/drink system at the resorts that Disney is going to start putting RFID chips into the mugs.
With the new RFID enabled mugs you will only be able to get refills at your resort for the length of your stay and the machines will be timed to prevent you from filling up more than once in a specified period of time to prevent people from filling other containers with the drinks from the resorts.
Some might say it's far fetched and I didn't think that drink abuse was rampant, but I could certain see it happening as people try to save money however they can. With the mugs running $15 each or being included in a dining plan and not changing designs from year to year there isn't anything that prevents guests from returning with a mug from a previous trip. There's also nothing that prevents people from filling other containers, either directly or by repeatedly filling the mugs. Again, not something I would've thought of but it is allegedly a problem.
With Disney already embracing RFID for tickets, room keys, MagicBands, etc I wouldn't be surprised if this was true.
