We are staying at the beach club villas and they changed our door with new rfid locks this morning while we were at the park. Our key cards were a multi colored blue color. They already have the chips in then as we didn't have to get new cards to use the new locks. They are very nice as you don't have to take them out of a plastic holder to open the door.

Nice, So I wonder if storm along bay entrance to RFID locks like AoA

I wonder if VWL will have the RFID doors when I'm down there in less than a month

Looks like they are moving forward with this next phase. This is how the door locks are on the Disney Dream and it works fine. I kept my key in my lanyard and it was nice not having to take it out. We are getting one step closer to the new fastpass system.

lets hope not. This system doesn't work well at BLT as guest leave the gates open and people just piggyback with others as they enter and exit. Unless there is a guard still at the gates the abuse will increase not decrease here.

The front desk said that the beach club is the first resort that is converting. They started last week and have the 5th floor and part if the 4th floor done.

That's great news, I really liked these locks on the Dream. Very handy if you're holding a little one, or your hands are full.

RFID is becoming more frequent in all aspects of our lives. Some school systems are putting these in the ID cards for children to track them. They are already in dogs and cats. Guess where this is heading......

Ok I am going to have to show my ignorance now. What is and RFID lock?

RFID uses a Radio Frequency ID chip to identify you. The chip is in your room key and all you do is hold it up to the lock to open it.

Disney it going to be using RFID everywhere for different things. They are testing RFID in drink mugs to control how many times you can refill it.

yea but if your credit card is on it - doesn't that mean it is easier for thiefs to copy your card???

glad you are enjoying your trip!:goodvibes

I would think your actual cC number is never stored on a KTTW old school or RFID , just something behind the scenes to move charges from your rooms account to your CC. (it should be useless outside Disney)
But it does seem too easy for someone to spoof an RFID to use elsewhere on property or get into your room.

Eventually yes, and probably every deluxe and DVC pool on property eventually and even bus stops.

As far as guests piggybacking, I really don't understand that, simply close the gate if they don't have a key, the one you let in without a key might be a flasher. I am sure Disney will get the word out you need your key to access the pool just as they have at SAB for wristbands, so why would anyone other than a pool crasher show up without theirs.

I agree with you except for the bus stops. The buses are for everyone, so no need to have RFID there. Those who stay off site are allowed to use the buses, so they would have no key. Disney doesn't want to limit access to their resorts, because that would limit revenue for things like restaurants etc.

Not to limit access but to track queues. The RFID chips could be used to identify the number of guests waiting at a given bus stop and even guest wait times via the unique identifiers.

They couldn't tell how many people are waiting for an Epcot bus (for instance) but if your key's unique identifier has been registered at a bus stop for 30 minutes, they know you have been waiting that long.

Aha! And THAT I am very much in favor of!

DVC very much wants to stop those using SSR buses to get to their cars at Downtown Disney. So yes this could happen.

Maybe only at park closing time when there are no restaurants at SSR open for them to use or shops either.

One of the main reasons SSR buses take so long at park closing to get guests to their rooms is they dispatch buses based on room occupancy. If there are more people riding than staying there, it is just a mess. And members are paying for that service.

If some of these freeloaders, that are not shopping, not dining but simply using the SSR bus system to avoid paying to park, have to start taking a taxi to get back to their cars then yes, it would be a good thing for Disney.

For one thing all those cars left at DD all day are keeping people away that want to spend money shopping and dining. Disney is losing revenue from these people because they are not paying to park at the theme parks.

And it would cut down on complaints at SSR.

Have you ever stayed at Congress Park and seen how many people get off at that stop at park closing and walk to DD, it is a lot.

Just to update 2nd floor is RFID also (we checked in today). Exterior doors are still magnetic swipe

As an SSR owner, I am all for keeping our annual dues low.
I love that they may use the RFID to track wait times, and hopefully reduce it, at bus cues. But it would have to be pretty precise, within a few feet. While waiting for a bus, I may walk up and down, past several destination signs, rather than just sit on a bench, or stand particularly when no bench is available. Bus lines spill into or very close to other bus lines as well.
Regarding the swimming pool issue:
I have no problem with key requirement, and am all for it. I always carry mine. But daily people complain about it. They or their kid went to the room, bathroom, whatever, and could not get back in. Some people refuse to learn, or "follow the rules".

The new dispatch system that was added to the buses a few years ago was suppose to send buses on demand. There are currently electric eyes on the doors of the busses that was suppose to count passengers as they get on and off, I guess that they never worked as planned.

Disney is all about cutting costs and increasing profit as all businesses are. If adding RFID ques at the bus stops gets more people in the stores, restaurants, or parks, I see it happening.
