Revolution

Yes, after a few years, the books may be gone - burned for fuel, burned because they are dangerous, etc. But, in the first few months after the blackout, no - destroying books on applied science is going to be a little low on the laundry list.

Heck - they're not in my top 10 list of things to do, in the event of some world-ending apocalypse. But, securing books with practical knowledge is up there - if civilization falls, I'm going to try my best to arrest that fall before it hits the dark ages, part II. Books are going to be a big part of that.

But in the first few months society is going to be focused on survival and adapting to the catastrophic change..not skipping down to the local library for books on applied science and there isn't going to be a large portion of the population that has such books in their personal library at home either..and those in professions/educational paths that might have such books would likely be the first targeted when corrupt power decides such books are dangerous or must be removed.

Whereas I contend that the ones who are most likely to survive are either those who are siding with the militias/warlords, or who actually make retrieving the books a short-term priority item.

At any rate, YMMV. I just find the fact that fifteen years have passed, and things have not moved out of survival mode for the most part. And heck, if I were to become a warlord - I want to find my science types. They can work for me, or they can die. Their choice. Because I do not want my spell of petty tyranny to be ended because I spent my time burning books and killing skilled craftsmen, while other warlords were busy rebuilding water-cooled machine guns, and seized the waterways with rebuilt versions of the Merrimac. General Voldemonroe seems to be incredibly short-sighted.

You don't know though based on 2 episodes that he doesn't or didn't have those types working for him. Rachel is being held by him (for what reason..what was her occupation prior to the black out or is it simply to try to bring Ben to Monroe?) and who knows how many others with science or crafting skill sets are in his command/control?

Clearly something is going on if he is having people lug a helicopter somewhere for him. Uncle Miles commented on Monroe having some sort of expectation of restoring power if he was making an effort to bring that to where he was.

He is however going to want to contain the power and knowledge for himself and I am thinking is not so keen on the "common folk" and those not aligned with him to have the knowledge or power or maybe ability to progress.

No, I don't. But there are lots of little things that are starting to really, really bug me - stuff that would not bug me as much (or at all) if it was 5 years post Blackout.

Who was the actor playing the solider beating up Danny?

ETA: I figured it out (I think). He played the copilot on "Pan Am".

I hate to say it, but DD and I about ready to call it quits with the show. We'll see what happens next week and then decide. I think DH has already given up, he left the room before it even came on this week.

The whole militia/fighting/rebel thing is not what I wanted out of this show. Charlie is hitting my last nerve and I'm not liking Miles much either. I'm much more interested in what Grace was up to, why her house got power so that Maggie and Aaron could use electronics for a minute; that whole mystery. Aaron is our favorite character.

I agree!!!

I'm done with the series. Bad writing, lousy character development, and it's not moving along fast enough.

Not for me.

I'm about done with this show. The first episode where a guy flew 10 feet after being shot with an arrow was hard enough to let go. Now we have the iPhone that manages to have battery power after 15 years.

No, the iPhone got powered from the necklace/thumb drive thing. Just like the lights and the portable DVD player.

Oh, so the necklace is a powerful wireless charger that manages to restore power to a 15 year old phone without being near it. Not much better.

And frankly I can't let the arrow thing (and other gravity ignore phenomenon) go :)

Wandered off to the computer room after about 10 minutes last night, guess I'm done with this show. :coffee:

Don't forget the DVD player too!

My husband said he heard NBC already picked up more episodes since its doing well

Doesn't surprise me. I haven't watched the most recent episode (too much going on this week), but the series is increasingly reminding me of a cross between Hunger Games and Red Dawn. And that's not exactly a good thing.

I don't think it is going to turn out to be a power source... I think it is a shield/neutralizer of some sort that creates a zone where whatever the force is that killed electricity is blocked. Entirely speculative, of course, and requiring total suspension of disbelief, but this is my take based on what we know so far. Something - and I think it is far too soon to speculate about what, but I lean alien/otherworldly in origin simply because the first episode implied that it was a global event - is inhibiting the movement of electrons. It wasn't a one-time event that killed existing electronics, it is, as Aaron said, a change in the laws of physics, a sort of invisible insulator that effects the very nature of electricity. That would explain why no one has rigged up coal or steam generators or otherwise found means of small scale energy generation, and it would make controlling those devices even more essential than if it just contained a one-time "fix" that would bring power back to the world.

I like where you are going with that ::yes::
