Better late than never. We've been home about a month and things are finally settling down so I thought I'd write quick reviews on the restaurants we tried.

Me and DH -ageless
DS 9
DD 3 days from being 4

We had so many reservations we didn't get to try much counter service. We did a grocery stop on the way in so had crackers, cheese, cereal, and fruit we would snack on in the room instead of doing CS.

Minor disclaimer - I am not a vegetarian but I kind of played one at Disney. It just worked out that way. I think maybe because it was so hot and the salads were always cold and crisp. Mmmmmm. Anyway here goes.

Monday - Chef Mickey's Dinner

We loved it. Maybe because it was our arrival night and we were all primed and ready for the Disney experience. Plus we had one of the first ADR's of the evening but we had no complaints with the food, service, or anything!

Donald was in the lobby greeting everyone while we were in line, after you check in you go to get your picture taken. Does anyone else feel like they are constantly getting suckered in by those pictures? You tell yourself you are not going to buy them but then the kids look so darn cute (this coming from their momma) and you tell yourself "It's a moment". Anyway I digress.
I don't know if it was because it was hot but I mainly ate from the cold salad bar, DH the carnivore had no trouble find plenty of meat and potatoes, and the kids food was fine, the usual mac and cheese, pizza, nuggets. Character interaction was great. Minnie even coaxed my overexcited, overly-tired DD to eat a few bites.

Will we return? In a heartbeat, but we would try to get one of the first seatings again because that line gets long!

Tuesday - Garden Galley at SOG

We had spent the day at AKL and were tired so just hung out at the resort for the rest of the afternoon . It was meat night or beef night, I believe, so DH was happy. There was more than enough salad fixing to satisfy me and a quite a nice selection for the kids. The only thing that sticks out was that there were only 3 choices for dessert and none were particularly kid friendly (cheesecake, lemon pie, and one of those 7 layers when we were there) but who needs dessert anyway. I don't think we were that disappointed. It just stuck out after the fantastic display at Chef Mickey.

We would go back if we were staying at SOG or wanted to save money. It was quite inexpensive.

Wednesday - Crystal Palace Breakfast

Did I mention we did too many buffets. Goodness! The character interaction was great and its was a beautiful restaurant. My eyes were crossed from so much food at this point, but I had fruit, and a nice egg scramble that had a lot of veggies in it. The kids loved the waffles, they smelled so good and were nice and soft. Again DH did the meat and potato thing. He doesn't like fancy but there was plenty eggs, sausage, bacon etc here to satisfy him. I think we would have enjoyed this more if we had not had two buffets on the previous days. My thoughts when I made these ressies was how much the kids love getting autographs and the characters but I think one buffet every 4 to 5 days is enough.

Would be go back? No reason not to. Service was excellent. Food was hot, varied, and plentiful. But kids prefer Mickey and friends so for that reason we would probably go back to Chef Mickey's first. If your kids prefer to eat with Pooh and friends this is a great place to do it.

Thursday - Mama Melrose - FDP
We slept in and hung around the resort until early afternoon. We spent the day eating Florida oranges (mmmm) and hanging at the pool (now that's vacations!) so were good and hungry by our dinner time. Our waitress was wonderful and very helpful. We got the salad with vinegrette dressing (I ate most of it by myself! It was so good) a 4 cheese flatbread, I didn't try it but DH and DS enjoyed it. There was also a bread that was very good that DD ate quite a bit of.

I had the Veal Osso Buco, DH had Wood-grilled Chicken - tossed in pipette pasta with artichokes, peas, and roasted red peppers in a basil four cheese cream sauce.
DS had the mini chicken parmesean and DD had pasta with four cheese cream.
Everyone enjoyed their meals but were full so we declined dessert.
I regretted that later, since our meal was at 5:00 I wish I had ordered something to take back to the room later as a snack.

This will probably be our FDP of choice from now on. The atmosphere is much more relaxed and rustic than Brown Derby. We have never been to Hollywood and Vine but didn't want another buffet!

Friday Hoop Dee Doo

What a great time! Everyone really loved this show. It really is worth doing at least once. Foodwise there was something for everyone. Again I loved the salad! I think it was the heat but I loved the cold salad with the tangy vinegrette. Plenty of meat for carnivore DH. He was in Heaven, plus he loved the show itself. This is the man that is usually rolling his eyes at all the kiddy/corny jokes. Here he was actually participating! DD ate her weight in corn on the cob plus a little fried chicken. DS sampled a little of everything except the ribs, he doesn't like saucey meat. He was in love with the strawberry shortcake, fried chicken and corn.

We would not hesitate to take a first timer there or recommend it to someone. I don't know if we wouldn't do it again by ourselves, just because there is still so much we haven't done!

Part II coming up!

Thanks for the great reviews. Keep them coming!

My bad! It was the veal Osso Buco.
Veal Osso Buco - slow braised and served with Risotto Milanese

I was thinking of Spoodles, where I had the Lamb Shank, which I don't think is on the menu but was the special of the day. More details on that one next!

Here we go with Saturday.

Saturday night was Ohana! This was our last day at the MK since we were moving from SOG to Boardwalk. The original plan was to go to MK for most of the morning, back to SOG to enjoy the pool in the afternoon then walk to Ohana for our 5:00 ressie.

Well there were really low crowds that day, due, I believe, to the fires from one of the highways right outside Disney property. It was kind of smokey on and off that day. But we kept finding one more thing, one more thing until about 4:00! So we just took the monorail to the POLY and waited right outside the Tambu Lounge. I finally got to try a Lapu Lapu! Loved it. One of the best adult beverages the entire trip. Ohana's was the first restaurant I ordered adult beverages with the meal. (yes I said beverageS) My husband god a little sunburn so I took one for the team and also ordered a backscratcher. :goodvibes

The food was fine, I enjoyed it. Again, ate most of the salad by myself. I had never been here before so couldn't compare it to the old menu. I like to try new flavors so I was all over the wontons and dipping sauces. BUT I was the only one. I think I dipped everything at least once in each of those sauces. (maybe it was the Lapu Lapu).
DH enjoyed...guess...the meats and potatoes! I have to say that DS didn't enjoy the food that much. Not because there was anything wrong with it but because he just didn't enjoy the mix of flavors. The waitress volunteered to bring DD some mac and cheese so she and DS shared that. DS did enjoy the dessert quite a bit. I enjoyed the stir fried veggies, wings, and salad ( and drink). I tried the dessert and it was MMMMMM but couldn't eat much.

Service was excellent. Kind of a tag team effort. We didn't feel rushed or anything but the food did come kind of fast. It worked well for us because we were all waiting for something different.

Would I return? Probably not until the kids were older and would appreciate the food a little more. Or if I was with a different group. The others just didn't enjoy it as much as I had anticipated which surprised me a little. But oh well. It was a LOT of food. I don't know why, after attending HDD and other buffets, but Ohana just feels like a lot more food!

Great reviews! Thanks so much for sharing!

Thanks for the great reviews- We will be going to some of the same places.
I tried not to do too many buffets but....

So you would do MM over HBD? I haven tbeen to either and I cant decide!
SOunds like you had a great meal at MM. I have read that service there tends to be slow. My mom is a foodie so I was leaning towrds HBD.

Thank you!

Great reviews - thank you!

I feel like we will have too many buffets next month, but I've been wanting to try O'Hana and Cape May. DS wants to return to Chef Mickey's for breakfast one day because he says "I like the ambience". DH and I could pass and would like to try another breakfast. I am looking forward to trying Mama Melrose this time around.

We're planning to do Chef Mickey's our first night as well and we've never been there before. What time did you book your ADR for? I want to take your advice of getting one of the early ones. TIA

If you have a foodie I would do Brown Derby. I liked the choices for the kids better at MM but for me personally I would choose Brown Derby. I love the Cobb salad. MM has a more rustic, homey atmosphere, Brown Derby is more upscale.

It's hard not to choose buffets or all-you-can-eat because sometimes they are the most kid friendly.

Right at 5:00. The line looked scary when we walked up until I realized that had not started seating yet. Then it moved quickly. Minnie walked the line and kept the kids entertained until they started to seat people. Our travel day has to be an early night because we usually take a 7:00 or even 6:00am flight out of Texas.

The next day Sunday, we had planned on going to Marrakesh (we were now at Boardwalk from SOG) but because DD's little incident by the pool (Minor incident at Boardwalk) we wanted to stay close to home.

We loved Spoodles. DD had the steak, I had the lamb special of the day, the two kids both had pasta. I wanted to order the dip appetizer but they bring you some warm bread to dip in olive oil. It was good. We swallowed that bread down like nobodies business. They waiter (excellent by the way) offered to bring us more but we were afraid we would be full before our entrees came. I love the decor of Spoodle. All that polished wood and brass, plus the barrels of sangria (at least they were labeled sangria) gave it a warm, inviting feeling. I really wanted to order the dessert platter here. By this time I was 0 for 6 in being able to try a creme brulee (still am :guilty: ) But we decided if we really were hungry for sweets later there were plenty of places along the boardwalk to get them.

I think next time I'm going on a dessert fest. Forget ordering dinner, I'm going straight for dessert and if I'm not full after my dessert of choice I will consider something of nutritional value. :rotfl: Won't that teach my kids some great habits! But I will have to qualify to them that it can only happen when your at least three states away from home.

Talk to MisterDisney and Kevin - a few months ago, they had "just" dessert at the Bistro de Paris in Epcot. Every dessert on the menu. EVERY one. *sigh* :)

We're in the same boat coming from OK. Actually we don't go to Florida in a boat...it's a plane, but you know what I mean. :rotfl: We usually take an early flight and it would be nice to have an early dinner. Last year we ate fairly late the first night and it was not good. Everyone was too tired to enjoy it. Thanks for the info. We'll book for 5:00.
