I'm looking for candid reviews of non-DVC resorts by people who have actually stayed there, specifically Hawaii. Trip Advisor has lots of reviews, but 99% are hotel reviews. Is there a board like this one for Hawaii villas?

You could try www.tug2.com for other timeshare reviews. You'll have to register to read the reviews, and that will cost you $15. But it should be exactly what you are looking for.

I am also a member and would highly recommend the reviews you'll find on TUG. ::MinnieMo

I'll second TUG and add Timesharing Today as well. But let me make it fairly simple. Getting top time in HI at top resorts is very difficult and really is nearly impossible for 2 BR units. The ones worthy of a DVC trade as set up by DVC are the following. Maui - Marriott, Westin and Embassy. Kauai - Embassy Marriott's (x2) and possibly Hanalei Bay tough some have had poor experiences there lately. Big Island - KCR (Kona Coast) though it's too easy to get to be a good value in many cases. Oahu is the Marriott.

There are other places worth considering but not at the number of points required through DVC. You could also look at other ways of accessing resorts and thus add a few resort choices like Pahio Shearwater, Bay Club, Hilton, Whaler, Maui Hill and the like. This also gives you access to additional inventory at your preferred choices. And if you can get it for less than 160 pts for a 1 BR, many other places become reasonable choices for the trip. Of course Xmas or Easter will be different than off season.
