SYLACAUGA The Sylacauga Aggies were both the hunter and the prey as they hosted the Chilton County Tigers in what became a game of firsts.
For the first time this season the Aggies led at the end of the first quarter. For the first time they led at the half. For the first time and on their ninths attempt, the Aggies gained more than 100 yards rushing and 100 yards passing. For the first time ever sophomore kicker Cason Farr scored a field goal.
Sylacauga even led at the end of the third, and most important, for the first time in 2004, the Aggies did not fall prey and handed Geoff Walters his first victory as the Aggie head coach, defeating the Tigers 10-7.
Credit to Drek on some great runs and Alan on key plays, both offensively and defensively, Walters said with a near whisper. We couldnt get it together in the end as I had lost my voice and they (they team) couldnt hear me to get the signals.
Walters was referring to sophomore Drek Pope, who carried the ball eight times for 40 yards and one TD, and senior Alan Bentley, who carried 11 times for 44 yards.
Chilton County head coach Steve McCord vowed that younger players would see the most action. They fumbled four times early, loosing three to the Aggies, and a Chris Crayton interception late in the game sealed the Sylacauga victory.
At 5:15 in the first quarter, the Farr field goal was good from 31 yards out, giving the Aggies a 3-0 lead. They drove the ball to the Chilton County 14 before a second drive ended along with the first quarter.
Members of the 1954 Sylacauga High School state champions, the only undefeated-untied team in school history, were in attendance, and it appeared they might have be disappointed when the Tigers took the lead.
The only Chilton County score came at 9:15 in the second as Jamelle Colemand scampered around the left side, untouched, for a 23-yard TD.
Less than a minute later, it appeared the Aggies were returning to their old ways as Tiger defender Desmond Rose intercepted a pass on the Sylacauga 14. That was when the Aggie defense stiffened. On fourth and 22, Jason Zylstra sacked Chilton County for a loss at the 35, giving the Aggies even better field position than they had before the interception.
Two plays later, Sylacauga quarterback Chris Murphy threw a swing pass to Kameron Pugh, who ran it down the sideline 61 yards to the Tiger 4. Pope ran it in from there, followed by Farrs PAT for what would prove to be the final score of the evening.
The scoring may have ended, but the game was far from over and the second provided plenty excitement.
On third and long at the nine-minute mark of the third, Sylacauga was going backward, so
Blake Payton quick-kicked out to the 48 yard line.
I was worn out in the first quarter after the quick offense we were running, said Aggie workhorse Alan Bentley.
But it didnt show as Bentley sacked the Tigers for another big loss and Sylacauga took over on downs at the Chilton County 32.
Sylacauga penalties in the final quarter appeared threatening to the victory. But the Tigers had a 19-yard touch down called back on a penalty of their own. Their second attempt at what was now fourth and 11 failed, and the Aggies took over on downs, but they were pinned deep.
Three successive penalties left Sylacauga with third and 19 on their own 4, but a Murphy pass to Crayton good for 22 yards with 5:40 to play helped to run more precious time off the clock.
A punt with 3:35 remaining put the Tigers in business at the Aggie 48. They were driving, but a Chris Crayton interception on the 2 ended the threat.
Next week Sylacauga is at home against cross-town rival B.B. Comer.
