Does this ride go upside down? There is no way I will get df on it if it does, It is unlikely he will ride anyway but if it doesnt go upside down I have a chance of persuading him!
This is one of the tamest rollercoasters when it comes to drops. Nothing big and it doesn't go upside down. You dont even get an over the head harness - just a lap bar which is fine.
I tried to get DD (8) on it but it was going through a breaking down phase so she was scared that she would get stuck in it.
Anyone know if it is still breaking down regularly?
Almost all attractions have technical difficulties aka "breakdowns" at some point. Sometimes it happens several times a day, sometimes once a week. It's unpredictable, and is not something to worry about.
I HATE rollercoasters! I am the biggest chicken on this planet. I have been on Hulk once (in August) and that was only because I lost a summer bet to my teenage son. My Tag is the result of my lamenting and agonizing for weeks on this board before our trip that I would actually have to get on the thing. I have yet to muster the courage to go back on it or try Fire or Ice. Thanks to MotherFletcher, Dark Marauder, Phamton and the many others that held my hand in cyberspace to get me to go on that hulking thing.
That said, Mummy is my all-time favorite ride. The coaster part is much better and smoother than the little coaster, Unicorn. And I do ride Unicorn with Ds8 because he is still 1/4 inch too short for the big coasters - much to his dismay. Do you know it takes 12 consecutive rides on Unicorn for the rest of your group to ride Fire with FOTL? Anyway, I digress. But I would much rather do 12 rides on Mummy than on Unicorn. Ok - I ride about 4 of the Unicorns and then sit on the rocks and watch Ds8 ride and run back to the queue. Again and Again and Again..
So, what I am trying to say (and not very well) is that for this Coaster Scaredy Cat, Mummy is fun. More than fun! Much more fun and not as "coasterish" as even the itty bitty kiddie coaster in IOA. So, have your Df try it. It is a blast. And if I can ride it, anybody can!
This ride is jerky and suspensefull, but it is really great. I don't like going upside down either, although I went on Dueling Dragons and Rockin Roller Coaster with DD! I was the only one in our family to ride the Mummy more than once. I reminds me of Space Mountain more.
I love this ride. It is my favorite ride in the world. My ride count so far is 64 times. Also, I would like to add that it still has its breakdowns. Actually last week we were there and they couldn't fix the problem in the ride so they had to evacuate the ride guests and they played the recording that I have never heard before. The one that says we are unable to fix ROTM so your experience will be extremely delayed. We suggest that you go enjoy some of the many other Universal studios attractions. We hope that you enjoy the rest of you day at Universal Studios.
I have to say I was mad. We had just run on like 5 times and then we get up to go on and the ride breaks. Overall it doesn't break down as much as it used to, but don't think it never breaks.

!
My DW is worse. She's only been on one rollercoaster. That was Gwazi at Busch Gardens under immense cohersion for DS & DD. During the ride She buried Her head in my arm and sunk Her teeth in!

Just so you know not all looping roller coaster have over the shoulder harnesses. There are several looping roller coasters with lap bars. For example, Flight of Fear at Paramounts Kings Island and Paramouts Kings Dominion are rides very similar to RNR at MGM. They have 4 Inversions and have lap bar restraints. Properly designed lap bars are just as safe as shoulder harnesses.
That being said the mummy does not go upside down. It is a great coaster. The hills aren't big but you get good air time a couple of places.
