Hi experts! :)

Can someone please tell me how much you would get charged if you return your rental car late? I have it for one week starting at noon and ending at noon, but I was contemplating staying at WDW later, so how much will I get charged if I return the car 2 or 3 hours late ? :confused3

Thanks!

I returned a car to Hertz today. Extra hour charges were $14.30 each...

(I had two extra hours, on Hertz it's extra hour charges UNTIL you hit the extra day charge which for my rental was $42. I had two of those also. I have had this car since July 17 so my car charges were well over $1,000!!!)

The actual rules depend on the company you are renting from so you should check the terms and conditions on that company's web site for the absolute answer. But in general terms, you would probably be charged for an additional full day's rental if you returned the car that much later.

I returned a car 2 hours late and was charged for another day. They have gotten real good at charging for late returns.

For Hertz rentals the xtra hour charge is half of the daily rate and if you have the veh for 2 hours you will be charged for an xtra day.

At Alamo last Nov, we had a mini blizzard here in my town so flights where cancelled and it really messed up stuff getting home. Orlando flight cancelled for 750pm, but I was able to rebook for 2 hrs later out of Tampa. I called Alamo becuz my drop off was Orlando... they said no problem so I drove to Tampa Airport and I dropped it off there... 2 hrs later, changed dropp off and no charges :) But I was noon pick up 530pm drop off... maybe that was already another day charged.

Not always. I am looking at my receipt which includes two extra hours which were charged at $14.70 each. Two extra days were also charged at $42.90 each so the extra hours were not half of the daily rate and at two hours I was not charged for the third day.

All of this is driven by the contract terms on your contract.

As previous poster mentioned check the terms & conditions with your exact company. we usually rent alamo and one time (couple years ago so it probably has changed since) was told that they give you under an hour if your late(free), otherwise its a full day charge.

Just go into your reservation and try modifying the return time for 3 hours later ! I just did this and the difference was only 2 dollars !!! then you don't have to worry !! :yay:

It is not a good idea to "simply" return a rental car late.

Most companies will not charge you more than the "extra hour" rate if you are simply tardy by less than an hour, but beyond that the results are unpredictable.

Rental companies reserve the right to refigure your entire rental at their current rates if those rates are higher.

At least call in advance of the anticipated tardiness. This at least betters the chance there won't be some "penalty" on top of the extra hours charge.

Also be alert when you are renting in one time zone and dropping off in another. Once I rented in the eastern zone and dropped off in the central. Picked up the car at 10 am and dropped it off the next day at 10am. They wanted to charge me for an extra hour. Good thing I was using my company's preferred car rental co. I was able to get it removed.

You are indeed a lucky person, most of the time when renting thru Hertz the hourly charge is half of the daily charge.

seashore

just recently National has changed its grace period to 29 minutes ....it used to be 59 minutes ( i know it affected a reservation we made for early august. when i made it, they allowed the 59 minute grace period, but when we checked on the ressie before going, they had charged us an extra hour so our cost was higher than the original quote)

My flight is now getting in 2 hours early. My rental, through Alamo, was for a 1:00 to 1:00 rental. I tried to change the pick up to 11:00, and my rate went from $90 to almost $300. I called Alamo, and the girl I spoke with changed my times with my rate going up only $2. I checked the new reservation and found the $2 is the fee the state charges per day of rental.

I'm very happy and surprised. I was afraid we would be charged an extra day.

Your rental is now 11:00 to 11:00. If you want the last 11:00 to 1:00 you will need to request that at the rental counter and they may or may not give those extra hours to you at the originally quoted extra hours or extra day rate.
