Restrictions on points that are rented / traded?

Lets us say (Hypothetically) I buy a used 150pt contract for AKL
But one year I REALLY want to experience RIV or RLL (I vote for Reflections Lakeside Lodge as a 3 letter acronym). So I either find a trade or purchase RIV points and sell my AKL Points,

1) Do the Riv points remain available to me until they are used / expire?
2) Can I use them to book 11 months out at RIV even though own at AKL?

If you look at going in the opposite direction, will trading / selling of points be a way to get around the RIV resale use restrictions?

Points retain their home resort and UY. If you get a transfer RIV or Reflections points into your DVC account, they can be used at RIV or Reflections. If they were purchased direct by the owner, they will be unrestricted and can be used anywhere inside the 7-month booking window. The same would be true of your resale AKV points if they were purchased before 1/19.

Like all points, transferred points are subject to the same expiration date as if they remained in the owner’s account. You can bank transferred points into the next UY if prior to that UY’s banking deadline. However, you cannot borrow them into the current UY. Transferring points does not remove the resale restrictions associated with them.

The terminology you are using is a little confusing. You don’t buy a “used” contract, you purchase a contract on the resale market. You don’t “sell” your points unless you are divesting yourself completely of your DVC contract. You either rent out a reservation made with those points or you transfer those points to another owner.

One thing to be aware of - DVC owners almost never "trade" points. There are two reasons for this:

1. We are limited to one transfer a year - in OR out. So if you wanted to trade your AKL points for my BWV points, we couldn't do that. I can't transfer points to you AND transfer your points into me.

2. It would be near impossible for you and I to agree to a price. Your VAKL point are pretty worthless to me.....I can get pretty much any room I want at VAKL at seven months, but my BWV points are valuable, since you pretty much need BWV points to get a standard view room, a Boardwalk view room, a Grand Villa, or any room at all at the BW during the last four months of the year.

What is far more likely to happen is that I will decide I want something hard to get at seven months - say HHI in the Summer (I have done this "trade") and rent points. I just rented through David because it was easy. And then I rent out the number of BWV points I need to pay for that "trade" - again through David - probably not to another DVC owner but just a random renter.

So this isn't a practical way to get around resale restrictions.

Thanks for the responses, I had not come across the one transfer per year restriction yet, which certainly limits the ability to trade..
