Restaurants that are no more

YUCK...my mom loves the local Ryans and very often plans family get-togethers there. Many many yrs ago the one in north cobb was really good, but the one here in town has always been horrible IMHO.
Isn't it weird how that happens? We had a horrible Cici's here but there's a good one in the next town, Plano. Of course ours closed down. Must have to with whoever manages the place. :confused3

must be management or cooks.
Yrs ago aunt and uncle used to drive by a Shoney's to get to the Shoney's they liked. I didn't understnad back then but boy do I now as an adult.
I used to drive out of the way to go to a Taco Bell that we liked, when I would be right by another one.

I am posting without reading all of the thread.

Godfather's Pizza
Chi Chi
Holly Farms Chicken
Don Pablos
Bennigans
Steak and Ale
Po Folks
Dunderbox Deli
Eckerds Drug Store had a cafeteria

A buffet place that I really like is Ryan's. I think the food is surprisingly good for a place of that kind. They seem way harder to find than they used to be though.

There are a couple of Ryan's here in the Charleston area. They really seem to be hit or miss. The one in my town was awesome, but it was the one they chose to close. That company has a newer brand called Fire Mountain, and they are a really great buffet, although nowhere near me.

Another steak chain around here that's closed is Quincy's.

Yeah, LOVED Po Folks!

Not sure if this was a chain, but in my hometown in PA we used to have a Winky's burger place. It made my dad throw up, but I remember liking it.

Well, I haven't heard of most places mentioned, but a few favorties that are gone now from here that I remember as a child are:

Farrell's Ice Cream Parlor
Tastee Freeze
Sambo's
Love's BBQ Pit

We have tons of Sizzlers (good, but only for the salad bar), El Torito (way overpriced but good Mexican food) and Shakey's (Nasty with a capitol N - sorry, but it is true).

We still have a Tastee Freeze in the town I grew up in. I loved their Big T burgers and their nut sundaes.

I miss Jahn's ice cream palor. Our Macaroni Grill closed last week. What is Miller's Ale House? We're getting our first one here. Anyone familiar with it?

Oh my goodness, I miss Jahn's! My dad worked in RVC when I was a kid. Once or twice a year we'd go to work with him, and he would take us there for lunch. I'd have a tuna salad sandwich or grilled cheese & ice cream for dessert.

We have Miller's Ale Houses all over central Florida. My family likes them a lot, especially the clam strip platter (reminds me of going to Friendly's). Prices are reasonable and we're very happy that they've got Leinenkugel on tap, too.

You walk in and it's a restaurant with wooden booths and floors, and then they've got a huge bar with a lot of tvs, then pool tables and video games beyond that.

If you go, you must try Captain Jack's Buried Treasure. I think it is our favorite restaurant dessert. Chocolate cake, with peanut butter, caramel and ice cream. Now I want one!

Several of you have mentionied Arthur Treacher's Fish and Chips - they had the best fish filet sandwiches, with goopy cheese sauce and cole slaw on them. Yum!

And one person said Dalt's. When hubby and I were young newlyweds in Nashville, TN 23 years ago, that was one of our very favorite places to eat. I loved their London Broil, and oh, my, that chocolate malt cake!

It's been almost 20 years since we moved away from Nashville, but Google tells me that Dalt's is still right there where we left it...

LiteBrite, you've given me another reason to visit Nashville! :thumbsup2 Their sandwiches and fries were so good and then that cake for dessert! Yummy!

It is! IMO it has gone somewhat downhill since its heyday of the mid/late 80s, but it's still there and they still have an awesome Chocolate Malt Cake!

I must have missed that one! My parents used to love going to Beef Steak Charlies for a "parent's" night out when my brother and I were little. Then it closed.

Anyone from L.I. remember Big Barry's? DH and I really miss the Tuesday 10 cent wing night!

I remember Big Barry's! Was there more than one? We went to the one near SmithHaven mall.

Wow...Beef Steak Charlies, totally forgot about that one! That was a Friday night hangout before hitting the bars for the night.

I'm still mad at Arby's for closing the location closet to me. Up until recently there was only one on Long Island (in Queens) but now there's one in Massapequa. Yea!

Farrell's Ice Cream
Howard Johnson's
Thrifty Drug Store Coffee Shops (California)
Sambo's

This is hilarious. Your above list is effectively the one I was about to post.

Funny thing is, I found a Farrell's Ice Cream parlor in Singapore the last time I was there. It was good too. It had a Orange Julius stand right next to it (another blast from the past) & a Woolworth's......

I liked the ice cream from Thriftys when we lived in California (was too young for coffee).

Also, the original Sambos is still around in Santa Barbara, California....I ate there about 4 yrs ago. Great burgers.....even better breakfasts.....

Is the Dunderbox Deli you're referring to the one with lots of German food? And a great selection of German beers to choose from? If so, we still have one here at the Lehigh Valley Mall.

We still have a Don Pablos here...

And Po Folks just changed names around here... to just FOLKS.. Some did close down, but I have one not too far from me. Nothin' like their Peach Muffins :)

I used to love Thrifty's Ice Cream...
You don't see too many Baskin Robbins anymore around here...

And..I know there are Perkins in FL.. but there used to be a PerkO's in CA.

And, the A&W's now that are paired with LJS or Captain D's are nothing like the old A&W stands :)

We still have Godfathers Pizza here in Houston. Some of them changed though and added large arcades/play centers, trying to compete w/ Chuck E Cheese and failing I believe. I remember back when they served their food on metal plates......the sound of forks scraping the plates always creeped me out....

We still have Steak & Ale here (good Prime Rib).

I miss Ruby Tuesdays & Del Taco......

I just remembered a chain of small diners called Steak & Egg Kitchen, anyone remember them?

there was a Godfather's pizza just down the road but we never did try it. It was there for about 2 yrs. It's been gone about 6 months. I think I had Godfather's as a teen but I don't remember.

Yep.... got to love the peach muffins at folks

One restaurant I really wish we had here is Bob Evan's. When heading to michigan we stop at the first one we hit in Kentucky. Same with heading to FL. I was in heaven when we went to Pigeon Forge for almost a week back in the fall.

We still have Ruby Tuesdays up here in north Texas. And I remember seeing the Steak and Egg Kitchen but I never tried them.

I ate at one in DC a few years back. It wasn't a franchise though, as I believe it had 2 brothers names in front of the Steak n Egg kitchen name. Food was good.

I think the original company and franchises disappeared in the 90's
