I'm just back from Orlando and thought some restaurant reviews might be appreciated. Here's my views;

Kobe, Japanese restaurant. Food was good, but the attraction was having it cooked in front of you. The chef had an excellent sense of humour and paid particular attention to my children. The only real choice we were able to make was the type of meat. The rest was done by the chef. Worth it for the shear entertainment value. Once is enough.

Olive Garden, Italian. Food was excellent, but the atmosphere isn't brilliant. The prices are above average. Our waiter was a little too attentive, returning to ask if everything was OK. The wife reckoned he was new to the job. This got a little tiresome after a while. Went twice, probably wouldn't go next time, if only because there are so many other restaurants to try.

Tony Roma's, American. Food was good, prices were reasonable, service was good. The child's menu has about 10 different choices including vegetarian. I'd go again.

IHOP, American, close to junction of I-Drive and Sandlake Road. The service and food was excellent. Breakfast wasn't cheap, and I wouldn't go again. Dinner is reasonably priced, and I'll go again. Service was exceptional.

Prime Time Cafe at MGM. You MUST MUST try this out. It's 50's style American and has to be experienced. We were shown to our table and introduced to "Cousin Sarah", our waitress. My daughter left the table to visit the restroom and was told to sit back down as she hadn't asked to be excused ! When she got back she was asked if she'd washed her hands, and then asked what colour the soap was ! We'd already been warned by a friend so she'd made a mantal note to remember what it was. My wife got a round of applause from all the diners for clearing her plate. All of the dad's were made to wear a bib. Cousin Sarah even tried to set up a date for my daughter with the boy from the next table. When we left everybody was told to wish their cousin's from the UK a happy holiday. I will definitely go back. Do what we did and do a day at the park, dinner at the Prime Time Cafe, and then watch Fantasmic.

Rainforest Cafe at Animal Kingdom. Give this a wide berth. The temperature set was low enough for the artic, not a rainforest. This meant the food got cold quickly. The service was very slow and the prices were far too high. I was very disappointed. Avoid at all costs.

Chef Mickey's, Contemporary Hotel. Another must do. The buffet breakfast was very extensive, compared to some character meals I've seen elsewhere on this board. We knew what to expect as we'd done it before but the kids love it, as did my mother who was having her first encounter with the characters.

MacDonalds, junction of I-Drive and Sandlake Road. Quite unlike
MacDonald's in the UK. There is more selection and this outlet includes a pizzeria, ice-cream sundae bar and a large games room./ The game room includes a huge assembly of ball-pits, ladders, slide tubes etc, as well as arcade games at reasonable prices. For example "Air-Hockey" is 50 cents, compared to the £1 per game in the UK. Be warned, the staff aren't very well trained, so check your bill, especially if you're using one of their offers. Try the Steak and Egg Bagel for breakfast.

Bill Wong's, chinese buffet. Do it. Have an afternoon's shopping at Belz's and drop in here for a meal. Arrive before 4 pm and you will pay the lunch-time price. Prices are very good and the food is above average. Service was excellent.

China Jade buffet and Mongolian Grill, on I-Drive. Don't do it. Cold food, poor service, zero atmosphere. Awful.

Cafe Tu Tu Tango, latin/Spanish style. Another must do. I don't know what it's like normally but we visited on a Friday when they were having a "Superhero's Night". We were served by a very camp Mutant Ninja Turtle ! Met up with Captain America, the Green Hornet, Tank-Girl, Cat woman (skin tight catsuit !), Supergirl (very butch, with beard), and many others. After the meal (tapas style) we walked around watching the entertainment. My daughters had their faces painted. They we had charactures of them done by an ex-Disney artist. I'm now the proud father of Super Hannah and Aqua Girl ! There was an artist working, somebody reading tarot cards, and two belly-dancers arrived as we were leaving. I told the waiter we were having the drawings done and he brought us our drinks and bill over. I know it was to free up the table, but the service was brilliant. I will be doing this again and would recommend it to anybody.

Chili's, Tex-Mex, on I-Drive. Brilliant food, brilliant service, brilliant prices, kids treated brilliantly. One word - Brilliant. Try a Margheritta.

Food Court at Florida Mall. Excellent selection, good prices. Olive Garden have an outlet there. Foods as good as the restaurant. £4 gets a plate of pasta, salad, garlic bread and a drink. One daughter ate Greek. You could try food before buying if you liked.

These are my opinions and other branches of the same chain will offer different levels of service and have different atmosphere's. Always collect the books of money-off coupons. Practically everywhere offers a discount of some sort.

Thank you for these reviews of both on and off-site restaurants:D

V.Useful info SidB, especially about the Rainforest Cafe. Sounds as chaotic as the London one - which can be fun but rather hit and miss in other areas - like entirely fogetting to bring me my meal having served the rest of the table once!

Hope you had a really good holiday.

Great reviews Sid - I really love some of the off-site restaurants and haven't eaten at some of them for a long time - so little time, so much choice. Cafe Tu Tu Tango has always been a fav of mine and The Olive Garden (I lurve their food) - thanks for bringing back the memories.

Sx

Excellent reviews, Sid. Extremely well observed and highly valuable to one and all, methinks. Loved the Cafe Tu-Tu Tango excerpt - one of my absolute faves, and a real novel set-up. So glad you enjoyed it too.

Now, if we could get this kind of feedback more often.............who's going next?

After reading some of the trip reports on the site I decided to keep a daily journal of what we did, ie parks, rides, meals, shopping, best/worst things of the day etc. Great plan, small flaw. We were all too exhausted to keep it up.

Anyway, to give some people an idea of the cost of the restaurants I've checked my credit card bill for details. The costs are for 2 or 3 adults and 2 children. Here we go now.....

Rainforest Cafe for 5 - £81
MacDonalds (Dinner) for 5 - £15
IHOP - Breakfast for 5 - £35
Kobe for 4 - £58.
Cafe Tu Tu Tango for 4 - £48
Bill Wong's, lunch for 4 - £30
IHOP - Dinner for 4 - £28
Chili's - Dinner for 4 - £28 (including a Margheritta for the wife).

There are still some bills to come through.

When you consider the costs in the UK (I reckon on £60+ for a nice dinner) it's astonishing how they can afford such good food/service/facilities. RIP-OFF Britain did I hear somebody shout ?

Simon, how about setting up an area for all of us to post restaurant reviews, especially those off-site, as there are plenty of Disney reviews.

I would suggest 1 per restaurant. If we get a wide enough number of reviews the readers could get an idea of which to check out or avoid. I'd suggest location, quality and cost of food, service, ambience, kids menu, cuisine type.

It's worth a try, Sid. I'll have a word with the Powers That Be. We already do a full Disney restaurant review service here on the DIS (check this out: http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/dining.htm ) but it might be something we could add to the Orlando Attractions & Hotels Board, and cross-ref here.

For what it's worth I like the idea.

A trip to WDW/Orlando would seem to broadly fall into - once there - where did you stay(location/facilities etc), experiences of the various parks and where did you eat (how much and quality of food) with shopping limping in at fourth place perhaps ;) Getting, there plus theme parks and tickets having been covered in planning.

I found SidB's info, all in once place, interesting & useful.

For some strange reason I keep hearing the distant sound of 'Rip-off Britain' ringing in my ears ;)

I will agree with Sid on 3 of his reviews. The last twice we have been to Orlando we have eaten at Bill Wongs. Both times the service has been great, the food fresh and hot, all in all great value especially if like Sid says you go before 4pm. I haven't tried the Chili's on I Drive but going with what Sid wassaying about it, it sounds as good as the one on the 192. What can i say, excellent food, excellent service and all round value. The food court in the Florida Mall takes a bit of beating for choice more than anything else. You can get anything from Mexican, Italian, Chinese etc etc. On the two occasions we were there shopping it proved to a godsend for my good self as the better half crippled the credit card. One highlight there was the "Charleys" outlet where i got a superb philli cheese steak. It was also fun watching the old girl who was handing out samples of the food helping herself to quite a lot of the cheese steak samples. Mind you i would probably do the same!

Cheers SidB.

Have been to Tony Roma's & we love it.

We also love Chilis although the service was not the best on our last couple of visits but the beer is always buy 1 get 1 free :):bounce:

Great stuff, SidB. Cafe Tu Tu Tango has been on our short list for as many trips as I can remember, but never seems to make the final cut. It sounds like a total riot and we'll definitely give it a go next time.

I'm totally with you on 50s Prime Time. It's never really appealed before, but we decided to give it a go last October. I loved all the retro 50s stuff in the bar area and, thanks to our server, we got on like a house on fire with our Canadian cousins at the next table!

I can't wait for my next trip. So many restaurants, so little time ... :(

Just remembered I have eaten at the Florida Mall Food Court and one of the chinese places served Coca Cola Chicken - chicken cooked in coca cola (only in America folks) and it was really nice and moreish :)

I love the Olive Garden in Florida Mall for the tiramisu-totally yummy and exactly the same as served in the restaurant.

Cafe Tu Tu Tango and Bahama Breeze have been on our hit list for a while-we will do them in May-that's a promise.

For a change for breakfast-why not try the omni Rosen or the Omni Plaza on i drive-for a big hotel-it is lovely anf friendly and breakfast/lunch is about $10 and the food is excellent quality. So much better than the Ponderosa, Shoneys etc-and there's no scrum! We just missed the Gaylord Palms-they do a one too.

Kobe-I started to feel was getting a bit over -rated-so we went back to The Outback again-never been disppointed there.

Carrabas is also very nice-but is starting to get a bit more pricey

Wasn't fussed on Logan's Roadhouse or TGI Fridays!

Never fancied that Rainforest Cafe at all and what's been written has just confirmed it.

We used to love the chinese take away in Goodings-now Winn Dixie at Splendid China Plaza. The food was freshly cooked and absolutely delicious-but sadly is no more:-(
