This was a Surprize Trip that DH planned for just the two of us about 2 weeks beforehand.

Friday (8/6) breakfast: We grabbed a quick bite at Captain Cook's, we both had eggs & bacon & cheese on a croissant. We also got a refillable mug, and got some diet decaff. coke. It was good for a quick breakfast.

Friday Lunch - Mama Melrose. We had never been here before, and the only reason we were there today was because we were on the 3 park tour and lunch was included. Can I say WOW. The best food we have ever had at MGM, we plan on going back in November. The food was served family style and we had no choice in what we got. We ordered drinks, DH and I both got diet coke. First they put down bread and dips (oil and pesto), then two hugh bowls of salad were brought out. The salad was Field Greens - Balsamic Vinaigrette and Gorgonzola cheese. I don't like dressing and am a plain iceberg type of girl, but I tried it, and loved it. It was YUMMY!!

Next they brought out 3 different types of flat bread pizza, four cheese, vine-ripened tomato, and grilled chicken. They were all really really good.

Then they brought out 3 different entrees. The first dish was the Wood-fired Chicken tossed with artichokes, peas, pepper and onions, and pipette pasta in a basil and four cheese cream sauce. I also don't care for white sauce, but tried some. WOW, it was delicious. My DH loved this too. Next came Linguini Fra Diavolo with shrimp and mussels. My DH doesn't eat seafood, and I don't like spicy, but I tried it. Also very good, yummy shrimp and pasta, the spice wasn't too bad after eating a piece of bread. Our table of 12 didn't like it. One gentlemen and I ate the shrimp and some of the pasta, and the rest was left uneaten. The next entree they brought out was grilled balsamic chicken over green and yellow squash. This was my DH's favorite. It was very very good.

Dessert was a sampler of vanilla ice cream, Tiramisu, cheese cake and a chocolate dessert (not mousse, they just removed that from the sampler, our tour guide Nancy wasn't happy). Everything was very very good. We will go back with the kids in November for sure.

Friday Dinner - 'Ohanas. This is one of my favorite restaurants. We sat down, and got our bread, a really small piece, but I didn't mind, I wanted to save room. The appetizers came next. I love those wontons, we went through two bowls. I also love the green beans, DH doesn't, and he likes the salad. We had some of the wings and a little of the rice. We were served beef and turkey first, then the shrimp and pork. DH doesn't eat shrimp, and I requested it not spicy. The beef was so tender and juicy. The turkey was also really good. The small piece of pork I tried was a bit dry. The shrimp were wonderful, not overdone. He wanted to give me the entire skewer, but I was like no way. I wouldn't be able to eat it all. Finally we both had enough and we were served out pineapple and caramel. I only had one piece, and DH finished the rest. He loves pineapple.

Later on during the evening we tried our first dolewhip. It was ok, we both like the regular ice cream better.

Thanks for the reviews! Mama Melrose and Ohana are 2 of our favorites too! ;)

JoiseyMom, I am curious about Mama Melrose. We had never eaten there because the prices seemed to high for pasta dishes. Are they serving family style instead of menu now? If so, how much was it if you do not mind?

I might be misunderstanding what family style means. I am thinking it is a pre arranged menu and they bring it to the table where you pick what you want and can request seconds if you so wish. A bit like The Garden Grill but eating with nice DW type strangers. LOL

They served us family style becuase we were part of a back stage tour. They don't serve everyone else that way. For us they served us a fixed menu, with big platters on the table that everyone passed around. The prices are high, but the food is worth it. I am thinking of using VKL Vouchers next time we go, since we won't be doing the tour again of course.

Thanks Joisey, information is a good thing to have.

For sharing your reviews,we also love Mama's and is a must do when we visit MGM.

Thanks for your revies. I have always planned on trying Mama Melrose's, but never got there - I think it will be a priority on our next trip.

JoiseyMon,
I'd love to hear about the 3 park tour. We are thinking of doing that next January (several days AFTER recovering from the 1/2 marathon). Don't want you to give away and of the secrets and surprises....mostly just did you enjoy it and if you'd recommend it. We've done the AK backstage tour and loved that (even though it was pouring rain most of the time). I've also done the wonderful, Walk in Walt's footsteps tour at Disneyland and enjoyed it very much. ::yes::

Sorry for going off topic, you can PM me your response if you prefer.

Thanks!

hi Jackie:D
by all means do this tour!! it was phenomenal! i did this in 2003 , it was my 1st tour (i have done backstage AK and secrets of WS since then) and is definately my fave although i enjoyed the others as well. it sounds like such a long tour but goes by very quickly, and the lunch at MM is as good as JoiseyMom says:D i think you will have "earned" this tour for completing that marathon;) feel free to PM me if you have any questions. as you say, i don't want to give away any secrets...;)

I was always curious about Mama Melrose, after reading your review I'll have to add it to my must try list. Thanks.

I agree. Take the tours! The tour that included the Mama Melrose's lunch is Backstage Magic. It is an all day tour, covering highlights of three parks.

The other tours I've taken were Wild By Design at AK a couple of years ago, and I took the Hidden Treasures of World Showcase tour in May.

Be sure to ask for qualifying discounts. Annual passholders,
Disney Vacation Club members, and Disney Visa cardholders
all qualify for discounts. You can't "double up", but if you have any (or all of the above), just pick one. :)

I have to chime in with kudos for Mama Melroses as well. We ate there in July and my DS devoursed his chicken parmigiano for dinner and wanted to eat there again. Which we did for lunch another day and even though the dish wasn't on the menu for lunch, the server said the chef would be happy to make one up for him.

I think that's exceptional and my DS was again able to enjoy his (new) favorite dish.

We will always find times to eat there on upcoming trips.

ibouncetoo,

Yes, we enjoyed the tour. They have changed it since 9/11 though from what my bil told me. But we did enjoy it :). I would recommend it. Now I need another adult only trip so I can do another tour!! :)
