Rest Break mid-afternoon Question

since we are going off season and the hours arent as long..we wont be leaving the park mid-day...plus our son naps in his stroller...so we will probably rest in the park...sitting down....shopping etc.

Now once he gets too old to nap in his stroller..I am sure we will be going back to our hotel and taking a break..defintiely a good idea. But we have a couple years before that will probably happen...since he loves his stroller

we go in October or January, and we take breaks some days and don't take them other days. It depends on how we feel. Our kids are 6 and 7, and sometimes they need a break mid-day to recharge their batteries.

No matter what Disney park we are at we always take a mid day break and we are just 2 adults. We use the time to have a relax, sit with our feet up, have a little sleep, upload the pictures we have taken that day onto our laptop, got for a swim or what ever we feel like doing. We feel that a break is good as we always use EMH so my mid afternoon we have been on our feet for ages so we like a rest!

I'm so glad to see we're not the only ones without kids who do this! We go back to the hotel after lunch and swim/sleep until it's time for dinner (every day that we're there - we're big nappers!) Then we head out for the evening!

Our last two trips (late June and August) we took daily afternoon breaks back at the hotel. Guess what- they were our best trips ever!
Some of us napped (me) and the DH and DD would go in the pool. Another time my DD and I took the boat to Downtown Disney while my husband stayed behind.
This rest time allowed us to get to each park at opening or during morning EMH's, get tons of stuff done and then leave by noon or so. By 4:00, we were heading out to a different park.
What you have to realize about August is that if they say it's going to be 92 degrees, it's 92 degrees with 100% humidity, and at 10pm, it may drop to 88 degrees and 95% humidity. Also, you may experience a thunderstorm every day, so bring ponchos.

If you get hot and sweaty in October, you'll die in August! It might say "only" 92-97'F on a thermometer, but it will feel like 102'F with the intense humidity.

I grew up in Florida and my biggest weather memories of living there are afternoon thundershowers and how awful hot it gets in August. Hats off to those that go then, you are braver than I. ;)

(To OP: We go in June. Number one rule for us besides taking afternoon breaks is to drink lots and lots of water, even when you are NOT thirsty. If you wait until you are really thirsty, you have waited too long.)

Great thread! We're going for the first time in July, and I'm DEFINITELY planning rest breaks. It is the ONLY time we can go, and I know it will be hot, but we'll just have to make the best of it. We are from Oklahoma, and it gets 100+ here in the summer, so we're used to it.

Unless I have a reason to be in a park during the mid afternoon (ADR or so forth) I like to have a break back at the hotel, throw on a load of laundry and have a swim in the quiet pool and a nap in a pool chair until the laundry is done. Recharges me for the evening!

Since we first went down as a family, 2001, we have taken afternoon breaks. We either nap, swim or just hang out. It is just a nice break. We usually head back to the parks around dinner time and we are re-charged to stay for the night parade or fireworks.

Just be aware that even though you are "used to it", it can really sneak up on you. It gets real hot where I am too, but walking around for miles a day in it is a lot different. :)

Hope you are a magical first trip!

So is it really horribly hot in August? October is up to 85 during the day and we do get hot and sweaty but is August even worse?

We have gone to FL the last 2 years in Aug. It is so HOT. You are sweaty after about 5 minutes outside and that is in the mornings. It is always above 90 degrees and the humidity is so high. It rains alot (those summer showers) and I would always hope that it would cool things down but it always made them hotter.

We always go around mid August.

I would go on the weather.com and check out last years temps. We are going this year in April over Easter because it is cooled - busier but cooler. I would rather have cooler and busier than hot. No more August for us.

Rest break? We can sleep when we're dead! We're going to Disney! :rotfl2:

Seriously....we only have two days, one at MK and one at DHS and we're staying offsite so there isn't any going back to the hotel to rest on this trip. We'll be there MLK weekend, which will be crowded....another reason we will have to pack an awful lot into a short amount of time.

We're taking food in with us and will certainly take breaks throughout the day if the girls....granddaughters ages 6 and 3....get tired, but we took our son and daughter at the same ages and they did great.

Of course, we're going in January and you're talking about August. I live in Georgia and if you've never experienced an August in the South, you have a big surprise in store. It will be extremely hot and more humid than you can imagine possible. It will probably rain at some point every day...that's Florida in the summer, which will only increase the humidity.

But hey...it's Disney!

Ya we are ones that think sleeping Is better off done while not on vacation,to:rotfl2:. But I pay for It to,by the time we make rope drop and close out the latest park closeing, I am feeling like I have been sleeping two hours before I even hit the bed!,or should I say sleep walking:rotfl2:,but In a weird kand of sick way thats what I look forward todo. But we do a afternoon semi break,we go back to swap shoes and socks, its someting we also look forward todo. This year we will miss the spring break hours,so the parks will close a little early for us,so we really will not take long on those breaks,so maybe we will plan a late night swim?

We NEVER leave a park for a middle of the day break. DW would refuse to go back. If we get tired, hot, hungry, etc in the afternoon, we stop, have an ice cream or drink, and sit somewhere for awhile. We arrive at a park at rope drop and stay in THAT park until we are through for the day. We usually choose not to stay for the "nighttime entertainment." We have never seen Spectro, regular Wishes, Illuminations, or Fantasmic. We have, however, seen Hallowishes and the nighttime Halloween parade. Both were incredible.

I'm all for afternoon breaks, too, but how do you get past the feeling that you are wasting time on the bus or in the car? I just wish I could snap my fingers and be in my resort! That would be my kind of Disney Magic!:wizard:

We went in August for our last trip and took midday breaks every day and it was WONDERFUL. We left the park around 12-1 PM, and by the time we got back to our resort it was between 1 and 2. We then took a 2 hour nap and usually at least 2/4 people would nap and the other two would rest for a while and if we couldn't sleep we'd get up and do something at the resort. When everyone was up we'd eat dinner and then head back to the park. By that time it was around 5-6 PM and then we'd spend time in the park until about 9-10. This way we had the energy to get up early in the morning for rope drop.

OP here! The summer in the South can be rough. Here in Huntsville, we don't get too many afternoon rains and I am hoing that by the time August rolls around the kids will be acclimated to the heat and humidity!

That would be the best excuse to stay at the Polynesian! I should tell my husband!;)

We have a 6 year-old son and we typically take a break after lunch every day. Our May 2009 trip will be his 8th visit to the World and he enjoys spending a few hours every day at the resort swimming. DH and I like the down-time and we're there for him, so it's whatever he wants.

My senior trip to Disney World was in August 2001, and we always took breaks in the afternoon! It gets way hot and sticky during August, so we were ready for a swim and a lunch break at the food court by midday - and it's kinda fun, too. Plus the parks are open later, so you'll have plenty of touring time after the break!

Now my DH and I have started going in January or February, and we really don't need the breaks. The weather's great and we're not fighting crowds all day, so it's a much more relaxed pace. (Well, relaxed for Disney World I mean. lol)
