We stayed at the Orleans and I can HIGHLY recommend it. They have a really nice pool area, the rooms are very large and nice, we had an awesome view of the strip so that was a bonus. Our room was $35/night. I think they are up to $40/night last time I checked for someone else. They have a free shuttle to the strip and they had a free shuttle from the airport and the driver took us around town to see things-that was nice.

I would rather stay off the strip and save money on the room so you have more money to do "stuff" in Vegas.

Has anyone ever stayed at the Hilton Vacation Club at the Flamingo? How is that different than the Flamingo hotel?

I've never stayed there, but I know what the difference is. Besides the name, The Hilton Vacation Club is a separate building from the Flamingo Hotel. They are located on the same property, but the VC is located behind the Hotel. The main difference between the 2 is that you get a kitchenette at the VC, where as the hotel you don't. Unless you're a high roller, than you get anything you want in the hotel.

I've stayed at The Venetian twice. I highly recommend the place. The smallest rooms are 650 square feet of luxury. If you sign up for their emails, you can get a room for less than $200 a night. If you want to spend a little less, I have friends who enjoyed The Mirage and Planet Hollywood. Both have nice locations.

We loved Treasure Island, the comfiest beds ever! But it is at one end of the strip, so lots of walking

This is one of our favorites also. DW has a cousin who works here. Real high up in the management chain. He always manages to get us great deals on rooms. For our honeymoon, he got us upgraded to a petite suite for the same price as a regular room. Now we are spoiled and this is where we usually choose to stay. True, it is at one end of the strip, but as much as the strip is growing, to me; I find it pretty centralized. Close to Mirage, Venetian, Caesar's Palace.

If you want to go down to MGM, Luxor and that side of the strip, hop on over to Harrahs. Cut through the casino and hop on the monorail, then on down to MGM. This will eliminate some of the walking. You have to pay to ride the monorail. I recommend the 3 day unlimited pass.

It depends on how fancy you want to get. I've heard that the rooms at the Mirage are great...but at the same time, if you want to spend a little less on the rooms and still have a great view and great time, the Sahara and Treasure Island are all around great places to stay.

The past couple of times we've stayed at Treasure Island and haven't had a complaint. We tend to spend most of our time out and about, so the only thing we really use the room for is to shower, change and sleep. So our theory is, find something nice, clean, and not too expensive, but if you want to get a little fancy, try upgrading to a petite suite at Treasure Island. Those rooms will blow you away and make you feel like royalty.

True, but you don't have to be timeshare holder to stay here. You can make a booking just like you could at any regular hotel.

I´ve only stayed at the Flamingo but we really liked it. It´s not the fanciest hotel on the Strip but you can´t beat the location and the pool and garden area is wonderful.

MGM rooms are okay and the public areas, including the dining options, are pretty nice, BUT, they gave us a major bait and switch for our visit in May. We had booked an upgraded room but when we got to our room it was just a standard room (we were not told at the check-in about the switch). We went back to the front desk and were told they didn't have any of the rooms we actually booked available. We had to argue quite a bit to get any halfway-acceptable compensation--the computer said we were using one type of offer but I was holding the printed confirmation showing clearly that wasn't the offer I had booked, and so on. Several other folks were in a similar situation. It seemed clear to me that they had simply booked the rooms for a higher rate to other folks.

We ended up at the Venetian and enjoyed it very much. I've also stayed at the Mandalay Bay (nice, but way down the strip) and the Tropicana (dated, but a decent location for cruising the strip). I've booked for this May at the MGM Signature, visited a business colleague in his room there and it looked great. BTW, there are lots of MGM Signature units that are available directly from owners through VRBO.com. Keep in mind MGM Signature has a nightly resort fee (which may or may not be included in rentals through VRBO); also VRBO rentals may not include daily maid service (which is included in the bookings directly with the resort).

Here's my picks:

Wynn - fabulous room but very expensive to eat there.
Flamingo - GO Room - nice room with reasonable priced restaurants
MGM - nice - but easy for me to get lost in the casino and always crowded
Harrahs - just ok. We usually stay her because we are players club members and get comp'd rooms.
Treasure Island - nice but doesn't provide the free stuff like we get at Harrahs.

On my NEVER STAY THERE AGAIN LIST: Luxor and Circus, Circus just bad....really, really, bad. Probably won't stay at Excalibur ever after a really bad meal experience in their nice steak house. We even had the manager involved and go no resolution.

We are going again in January and I really wanted to stay at Planet Hollywood but I was overruled by DH - he want's to stay at Rio (and it's free)... can't beat free....

I just love, love, love the Signature at MGM grand. The place is gorgeous! I love the pools, restaurants, and shows and everything that the MGM has to offer. Of course we go to dinner and shows at other properties, but for my past 4 trips (3 this year alone) I stay at the MGM grand.

Another vote for Planet Hollywood. We stayed there in October and we absolutely loved it!

I want to stay at the Bellagio next time! Also we went to a bar in the Hard Rock Hotel which is off the strip but still was a lot of fun. When i went with my parents we did the Mandalay Bay. It was okay. I went this summer for my 22nd birthday and we did Treasure Island which I loved. About two weeks ago I went and we got a great rate ($65/nt) at the Monte Carlo. That was a pretty good location and a great value for what we paid.

My parents live there and have stayed in every hotel - that's my mom's *thing* she likes to get great local rates and go and stay. We go there once or twice a year - DH and I get away and the kids get to spend time with the grandparents - win, win all around!

As for me - MGM beds are AMAZING. Most comfortable bed I have ever slept in... so much so when I get a new mattress I am getting the mattress they use.

Paris was okay, nothing special. NYNY was SMALL. Tropicana was old... kinda run down.

My favorite... Flamingo! I think it was because we got the room for free and then I won $900 in a slot tournament. DH played slots and we ended up with a lot of comps - left there up about $1200. So that is why it is my favorite. Oh and the room was QUIET. I think cause a lot of older people stay there so no loud, obnoxious people...

(note: you can get great view rooms - one of ours overlooked the bellagio fountains - from one side of bldg -never occurred to us that we would be able to see it - very nice and reasonable price - great pool)

Tahiti - Timeshare off strip

For me - despite being older, I really like the Flamingo - great location, good room, great pool

The nicest room was the Rio

Best value was Orleans

I suggest you check out Cheapovegas.com - I find their reviews of each hotel funny and helpful

Ah, but is it the chicken or the egg? If everyone who loves vegas pooled their knowledge in one place...it would be an active board, and everyone would benefit since unlike all of the great Vegas info on this fast moving board, it won't sink to page 30 in 2 days!

Although I am not the OP, I really appreciate all the suggestions. We have decided to go next Sept and will probably stay at either the Flamingo or Bellagio (if we can snare a great rate.) I would consider the Hilton Vacation Club rooms at the Flamingo if I thought we could easily prepare simple meals (breakfast and lunch). Is there a convenience store or supermarket close by?

We will go to the Donny and Marie show for certain. Am also looking at one of the Cirque shows. Any thing else not to miss? (Remember, my Mom is 75 years old)

Has anyone ever taken the bus tour to Hoover Dam? I am thinking this is something my Mom would like to see. Also, I understand their is an indoor mall with a canal system and you can take a boat ride?

Neither my Mom or I are much into gambling, so any suggestions as to other activities would be appreciated.

Not on a bus tour, but we drove to Hoover Dam and did the tour, it's quite impressive.
