Resort Tipping?

I want to get an idea of how much I should tip certain people at the resorts. When we went to AK I in April I always wondered if it was enough or not enough etc.. I was once told that you should tip 10% of the room cost but that could really add up to a lot in an expensive room.

Now at AK the we had someone how took our luggage from our car and put it on the cart and then someone different that actually took it to the room. So do you tip both of these people and how much each?


Do you tip anyone else in the hotel assuming you don't order room service?

For the bellhop, the typical tip rate is $1 per bag, but sometimes we tip more depending on how friendly and helpful her was. If we get into a situation like you described where one guy loads the bags from your car to a cart (but does not take them to your room), then I ususally give that guy like $5 or something like that.

Mousekeeping...we've actually only tipped mousekeeping on one trip. When we did, we tipped about $3 a day.

Disney's housekeepers are non-tipped personnel. There is no need to provide them a gratuity.

Bell service should be tipped $1-$2 per bag.

The 10% is not correct. Just think if you're paying $300 at a deluxe, that would be $30 for perhaps 20-30 minutes work.

I think the general rule is $1 per person if you choose to tip mousekeepers...which I do. These days when we're down to only 3 or 4 people on a trip, I still leave a $5 usually.

$1-2/bag for bellservices is the norm too I believe. Rounding up makes sense to me. This should not be optional as tips is a major part of their income. But you know it has been $1-2/bag forever....maybe there should be a cost of living adjustment?!

We tipped housekeeping $5 per day for our less than neat family of 4(We realize that this isnt a tipped position, but we think its the right thing to do for our family). We didnt tip the bellhop because we took our own bags. We did tip the ME driver on the way to our resort because we claimed our own bag at the airport, and we tipped her $3 for 2 bags.

I don't recall ever seeing one person load our bags and a different one come to the room. We use valet parking, so we are already tipping the person who is taking the car $5. (some people only tip when they pick up the car, but we do it both ways) I am pretty sure we only tip the baggage handler who takes the bags to our room. (Probably 10 or 20 bucks, we always have a lot of bags!) Once the bags are being unloaded from the car into Disney resort bell services "control" how many people they choose to handle them is not my concern, nor do I even see it or notice it. We tip the one who brings them to our room. If THEY choose to use two people to do a one person job, that's their choice. (and the bellhops could choose to share their tips, as do waitstaff with cooks or the bus staff)

Please don't think I say this because I don't "want" to tip everyone--and to be honest, since it's always dh who handles tipping I could be completely wrong anyway! (and I take a pretty big dose of XANAX to fly, so am usually a bit out of it when we arrive anyway, LOL! Come to think of it, maybe this is why I've never "seen it" LOL!)
He probably tips both because he's generally a big tipper.

Oh, and we tip housekeeping $5 a day for the three of us, (but we are generally tidy) we have tipped more if there was a big mess from an accidental spill or something.

For a family of 4 I tip housekeeping $5 a day, bellboy $5 for 3 bags. We have never got room service, I thinks it crazy to pay a 18% charge for delivery. I will p/u the food and bring it back to the room myself.

When we stay at the GF with a car, we usually valet park upon arriving. The same person who takes our car keys typically puts the luggage into storage, so that's one tip. I think my DH tips $5 when we arrive for the first time at valet, taking into consideration our couple of suitcases. After that, it's $2 when we drop off the car for valet and $3 or $4 when we pick up. We tip the bell person $1 per bag when he delivers the luggage to our room. In addition to delivering the luggage, he usually checks to make sure we know how to operate the sliding door, the thermostat and will fill the ice bucket. I always tip mousekeeping because it's not me who has to make the beds and pick up the wet towels. That tip is $5 per day. At the deluxe resorts, you can also have turn down service. That's an evening form of mousekeeping where they'll come in and replenish any towels and toiletries that you used during the day, turn back your covers, leave a chocolate and bed time poem, and leave a light on for your return. For this, I typically leave out $1 per bed or $3 minimum. Seems like a lot of tipping, but I figure it all out ahead of time and set aside the correct number of $1's and $5 dollar bills in a separate "tip" envelope. It just gets worked right into the vacation budget.

If you arrive early and have to pre-register, as we did, you will definitely have two people handling your bags for you. I tipped the one who unloaded it just the same as the one who brought it to our room. We also switched resorts mid-vacation, so we tipped the person who picked up our bags at AKL and the one who brought it to our room at the Poly. I may have overtipped, but I wanted to be sure they were taken care of properly. It's probably not anything to actually worry about, but I want to make sure the person who takes my bags and stores them for me happy!
