We are planning on a trip to coincide with a convention my husband will be attending. The kids and I will be camped out at his hotel off property and attending the parks while he works. Once his convention is over we plan to stay at AKL for a couple of nights.
Because of this my husband will only need a 2 day ticket while the kids and I will need a 5 or 6 day. Do we have to have the same tickets when a package is purchased? And do the days of park tickets need to match the hotel stay?
TIA

Yes, if you get a package, you have to get the same number of days of tickets. However, you don't have to get a package. Just do a room-only reservation and then buy the tickets separately. The deposit/payment rules are a bit different, but other than that, there is no difference. When you go to buy your tickets for our off-property stay, buy the 5/6 day tickets for you and the kids and then get a 2-day ticket for your husband. Then, book your AKL room-only reservation.

Okay. That makes sense. I was hoping to get a discount with a package but I guess I'll look for room only discounts instead. Thank you.

The room only discounts are usually comparable to the package discounts. Disney just markets them differently.

So should I book now and then apply the codes when (if) they come out? What is the cancellation policy for room only bookings? I looked through the sticky threads and couldn't find it.

You can book a package for you and the kids, and add your husband to the room later. Then he doesn't have to share the package.

Yes you can book now so that you can take advantage of your 180 day ADR window. If if a discount comes out and is applicable to your reservation, you can convert it. Cancellation policy for room-only reservations is you can change or cancel your reservation without penalty up until 5 days prior to check-in. If you cancel after that, you forfeit the first night's room rate and your park tickets that you may have purchased. Those can be saved for a future trip.

Not saying that this is incorrect information as I have tried to do this numerous times and have been told by the CMs that EVERYONE, even those who are added later, most have the same package components (including tickets and dining).

Room only (RO) reservations must be cancelled at least 5 days in advance to get a full refund of your deposit. The deposit on a RO reservation is one night's rate, and the deposit on a package is $200. Packages must be cancelled at least 30 days in advance for the refund.
